jv16 PowerTools 2006 RC5 released. You can download it from:

Don't install it over any old version.

Release notes:

* This software is a Release Candidate, it's not the final product version - do not uninstall jv16 PT 2005 because of this version!

* This release does not contain any documentation.

* Everything should work but use common sense and be careful.

Hello jv,

"Mark item as old" is not working fine. This setting is not saved.

Even switching to another tool and coming back soon - all the items are "New" again.

Edit: At the installion I enabled the use of central server. In Network settings "Startup Manager" was not checked by default. Is this fine ?

Despite this small things, thanks again for all the work you done.

jv16 Power Tools 2006 RC5

I D/L & installed this new RC but unfortunately received the following error message:

Your Trial period has ended, Please visit etc.

Unfortunately this has been an ongoing issue with most of the jv16 PT 2006 Beta & RC versions. Generally when installing and testing a new beta or RC one is given 30 days to test that particular release or version however with jv16 PT 2006 this has not been the case. The 30 day license continues the countdown no matter if that particular version was uninstalled. One is not given a full 30 day period to test a different and newer release or version.

Since many beta testers do not have a product license our test periods for several versions were drastically shortened or had expired. Help please, if we have no license and our 30 day trial period has expired how can we continue to test the new RC5?

I don't understand why this happens to you ... I just deleted my license from both RC4 and RC5 Program Files directories. Both versions now tell me I have 24 days left.

I am also experiencing the expired license problem. This also happened with RC2. I have tried uninstalling all prior RC versions. I have also deleted the program files folder for the RC versions that have been uninstalled. I have then reinstalled RC5 and still I have the license expired problem.

One thing I have noticed is that I also have seen successive RC versions starting the countdown at the same number of days as the previous version. Could this have something to do with the fact that in add/remove programs only one version of jvpowertools will be listed? I have installed each to its own directory yet only one version will appear in add/remove programs. I uninstall using the uninstaller that gets created on the start menu.

Registry Cleaner: entries containing double backslashes

Note: PT-RC5 problems in red text -- rest is just observations ...

First RC scan included 17 lines with double backslashes. The two files shown by the 17 RC lines actually exist.

The double backslashes are probably (almost certainly) due to bugs in windows (windows installer (16 lines); explorer folder options (1 line)).

Note: Most items in redseujac's post above are a different kind -- looks like they may be table entries ...

The challenge: how to use PT to correct the bad registry values ...

1. Ran RC scan, selected all, clicked Remove ...

... Result: list purged, good backup produced, registry entries actually gone.

2. Ran RC scan, selected all, clicked Fix ...

... Result: same as 1 above; message indicated nothing could be fixed.

3. Ran RC scan, selected all, clicked Custom Fix ...

... Result:

... prior problem (GUI sensitivity) fixed ...

... arrows to cycle through list ... nice feature addition ... Correction: these arrows also serve as a "Skip" function, so the blue text below can be ignored.

... "Data now" presented for each line was "N/A" (for @ entry-name) ... should be "Value" from the line ...

... selected "Fix manually" for one line and used copy/paste to change the "Fix manually" input area ... clicked "OK" ... rescan showed the correction went to entry-name, not to value (creating a new error (actually two more due to twinning)) ... no way to correct these lines with RC5 CF ...

4. Ran RC scan to pick up some "recent file" errors, selected some, clicked Custom Fix ... the "recent file" errors could be "Fixed manually" in CF ...the double backslash items still could not, even the one "fixed" in 3 above ... and since CF has no Skip capability, had to Close CF to avoid taking an unwanted action. See screenshot. The two selected HKCU/HKUS lines could be fixed with CF; the two selected HKCL lines could not.

5. Tried to fix the errors with Registry Find & Replace (it worked with two passes (C:\WINDOWS\system32\\ and C:\WINDOWS\Installer\\)). The "system32" Find argument picked up two other double backslash items in the registry, which I ignored for now ...

In Registry Manager in Add/Remove, IE Context, Open with and Search - Tabs I don't have any entries listed. Only in the Age column is 1 case and "New" to see.

This looks very unusual to mee !

Could this be confirmed by some others?

Thanks for getting back to me regarding my expired license issue. Yes, I followed the install directions exactly as recommended. When I installed any of the jv16 PT 2006 beta or RC releases they were always installed into a separate directory i.e. jv16 Power Tools 2006 and not in my jv16 Power Tools directory where I have jv16 PT 1.4 (RC2) installed.

As mentioned, most of the times the license countdown continued from one beta & RC release to the next however occasionally the (jv16) developer would correct this.

Any other workarounds or suggestions would be appreciated so I can start testing RC5.

I'm also having licence expiration issues. I uninstall the previous beta and then delete the dierectory it was in before installing the next.

Any solution would be appreciated.

How did it go from a relatively stable RC4 to a totally FUBAR'd RC5? Did you run it at least once before releasing it?

Add/remove is totally blank except for one entry (just a check box, no entry actually). The age system doesnt work at all...nothing gets saved. I think this feature should be on by default. It is really the most useful part of this program...quick to see whats changed.

anyways....pretty lame release.

That was on my desktop; on my laptop, I just got the same message as marsman.

1. The setup file was the same one on both machines (copied through the home wireless network)

2. Apparently during the first execution of a new instance of PT, it looks around on the disk (registry not involved) and uses the first license it finds as a template for the beta license (data2.xbin).

3. If it finds an expired license, or uses the one in the download (which evidently is an expired one), that "Trial period has ended" message is the result. Workaround? I suppose you can search for an unexpired license in the Recycle bin, but ====>

4. The cleanest solution? jv should provide a new trial period license for all you volunteers without a permanent license.

5. Of course, if you have a valid license you can override all this by copying it to your new PT directory.
