Something’s very peculiar going on with the Software Manager and the Registry Manager.
According to Registry Manager, the Add/Remove list of the Registry Manager is almost identical to the one in Windows Control Panel. You should use this tool only to remove left-over items from the list with the Remove button. To uninstall software you should always use the Software Manager. This is a JV16 Power Tools 2006 hint which pops up the first time you open the Registry Manager.
Okay, this is the strange behavior for lack of better words. In trying to use the Software Manager to do a Custom Uninstall of Mozilla Firefox, JV16 would give me an error message that says, “Could not locate the product installer.” There are three entries for Mozilla listed in the Software Manager and I would get the same error message for all three entries, although, if I were to use the Registry Manager which is only supposed to be used to remove leftover software debris by using the Remove Button, (that’s the other thing that’s puzzling, why is there an Uninstall button for the Registry Manager when according to JV16 you are only supposed to use the Software Manager to uninstall software.)
Okay, I digressed a bit but here’s the rest…. Using the Registry Manager’s Uninstall button I am able to do a thorough Uninstall of Mozilla… go figure. This is very puzzling indeed. The Software Manager which is supposed to uninstall software doesn’t and the Registry Manager does by using the Uninstall button in Registry Manager.
According to JV16, If the Registry Manager is only to be used to remove obsolete software which I assume is traces left over from the Software Manager or Windows Add/Remove program. If this is the case, then why the Uninstall button in Registry Manager? Bottom line…I can’t use the Software Manager to uninstall the software but I can uninstall it by using the Registry Manager which actually does locate the product installer. I'm Totally baffled by this one.
I hope that was not too confusing, there’s a lot going on here which doesn’t quite make sense. I appreciate anyone’s feedback on this one. Thanks.
