• jv16 PowerTools X
  • Initial Setup / Uninstall Software & Leftovers Broken does not finish

This tool runs for 10-15 minutes, gradually filling up memory used by jv16 to 0.5-1.5 GB before crashing. Happens on two computers (Dell Optiplex 9010 8 GB RAM and Latitude E6520 6 GB RAM). Reverted to build 1486 from a backup, and this build works fine on both machines. Crash reports were submitted to Macecraft. :

There is unfortunately a bug that in some very specific systems cause the Software Uninstaller's scan to fail. The same issue is also affecting some users with the Initial Scan, as the Software Uninstaller scan is also run there.

In earlier versions, the problem was more common and we received quite a few bug reports, with the latest build (build 1495) it's much more rare issue and seems only affect a very small number of users. What is happening is that the issue occurs only with some computers, most likely relating to what software is installed to the computer.

The next build of PowerTools contains our latest attempt to fix the issue. It has been a difficult one to fix, because we cannot reproduce the problem in any of our test environments.

I am running version 1495 on a Dell with Windows 7. It never finishes setting up. Is there a workaround for this.

Since we cannot reproduce the problem in any of our test environments, would you be interested in running a debug version of the software that would possibly help us to solve the problem?

Running the debug version would only require you to install the debug version and send over any debug files it may generate. However, it would probably take few different debug versions to try in a course of few days to get the issue fixed, I doubt we can find and fix the problem in first try.

I would be interested in running the debug version, but I cannot start until next week.

I have exactly the same problems running builds 1495 and 1499 during the Initial Setup / Uninstall Software/ Leftovers Broken does not finish. For this reason, I have several by the program generatet bug reports sent to 'bugs@macecraft.com'. The problem is still there. I would be willing to run the debug version on my system. Please contact me. I am a registered Platinum VIP User.

Just installed the latest update (1499) and still have the problem with the uninstall feature. It says searching for installed software ...... and the bar gets about 1/3 of the way up and it just stays there. Was hoping this update would fix the problem but it hasn't.

Jim

I have the same hang issue on Initial Setup using Ver 4.0.01499. Strange but JV16 2014 does not have this issue on my PC.

4 days later

I also have this problem with 1499 on Win 7.

I have exactly this problem. The scan starts and never finishes.

My system is Win 7 Pro, latest JV16 installed.

Initial setup does not finish. Running Uninstall software & leftovers also never completes.

After 25 minutes I would have thought that the program had sufficient time to finish. Apparently not. It just sits there registering 13% CPU usage for ever...

Please fix this!

cheers

Darryl

Here is a private test build we have prepared in an attempt to find the cause for this problem:

https://www.macecraft.com/downloads/betas/jv16pt_test1.exe

If you are experiencing the problem mentioned in this thread (Initial Setup and/or Uninstall Software freezing or never finishing), please download and install this test version and run it. It will generate debug files containing information about what is going on under the hood of the program, that will help us to fix the problem.

After you have ran the program - let it run for 15 minutes in case it never finishes - zip the entire Backups directory and send it to this thread or directly to me at: jouni.flemming@macecraft.com.

Notes: As this is a test build, it should be installed to a separate directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools X - Test\) and do notice that the included debug code will make the program run slower than normal. The test builds always have the Auto Update feature disabled (meaning this version is not written over to be updated to the latest official version of the product), also the Check For Updates feature will report the latest official version as the latest version.

Hello jv16

I have tried to remove uninstall the scribus 64bit (DTP) program. Retrieved from Sourceforge.net. It is impossible. There is not removed anything at all in the registry. Norton seciruty told to file ue.exe had been removed because it was harmful.

So I got an email from Notepad ++ (an excellent editor) with a strong warning on Sourceforge.net, which is filled with malware and other malicious files. Therefore, Notepad ++ no longer can bee downloaded from Sourceforge.net.

I have now tested with Malwarebytes premium and HitmanPro for malware, and no problems.

My Computer Sony Vaio (VPCEB1S1E) 8Gb RAM, Intel icore5, Windows 7 ultimate

I hope you can resolve this issue.

Sincerely

ps. 2 computers more, it is not tested. .

UPDATE: The problem initially noted and discussed by all but the most recent post still persists, in builds 1494, 1499, & 1502.

I will install and try the test build generated to address this problem.

Unfortunately, the test build referred to in the July 1 jv16 posting is not available (page not found), and the latest build does not correct the problem. Have jv16 given up on this?

I'm still getting this issue too. I'm running 1502 and initial setup doesn't complete. It gets about 1/3 of the way across then stops. If I close and re-run JV16, it'll get to the end and continue normally. If I then run it again a few days later, it goes through the initial setup sequence described again.

Even if outside of the scope of this thread, I would like to ensure you that we will be testing Scribus uninstall process in order to determine any leftovers that might be missed by jv16 PowerTools 2016 (at this moment, available in Beta 1 version, for testing purposes only). See more details about Beta 1 and feel free to jump into the discussion if you manage to find any bug or if you have a feature suggestion that we can take into consideration. The current thread is located here: http://www.macecraft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5767http://www.macecraft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5767

Please note that we might open a new thread in the Beta forums soon enough as we are getting ready to release jv16 PowerTools 2016 Beta 2 so if by the time you manage to test jv16 PowerTools 2016 there is already Beta 2 released, then please, test the latest version instead and let us know if it is able to release Scribus and any software leftovers that it might still abandon on your system for any reason.

At the time of your attempt to retest the special debug build created for this purpose, the installer was removed from the repository for security reasons. Please let us know if the Initial Setup will complete on your hardware/software configuration using the latest jv16 PowerTools 2016 Beta 1 (version for testing purposes only). You can participate in the discussion and download it from this thread: http://www.macecraft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5767http://www.macecraft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5767

As I also mentioned to Christian Wiedekamm earlier, please keep an eye out for Beta 2 version in the next few days. We will release a newsletter announcement and also launch a new thread for our users to report on their findings here: http://www.macecraft.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=10http://www.macecraft.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=10

You can rest assured that we have no given up on fixing this problem, however, we may require some additional data resulted from your particular use in order to reproduce it (have not managed to obtain your particular Initial Setup fail conditions up to this date, however, the Initial Setup has been vastly improved for jv16 PowerTools 2016 Beta 1 and the upcoming Beta 2 so chances are that we might have stumbled upon a fix in the while).
