When I used (ticked) "Remove Recent Documents from the Start Menu....." in SpeedUp my computer, the recent documents list is removed in my Office 2010 applications (Word, Excel, ..). However when I untick that setting, and restarted my computer, the recent documents list was not restored. In fact in Word|File|Options|Advanced the "Show this number of recent documents" is completely greyed out (unaccessible). I had to do this below to restore it:
Browse in your registry to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer and look for a NoRecentDocsHistory value. Delete the value or set the data to 0 and then run gpupdate /force or reboot.
