jv16 gets stuck

Hello all,

I am evaluating jv16 PowerTools 2011 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 running XP SP3.

I *think* I like jv16 but it doesn't want to work properly. Scanning the system to clean & fix the computer works fine. But during repair/remove of the found items the program seems to get stuck about halfway or 3/4 through the process and nothing happens anymore. Regardless how long I wait. The only possibility is to cancel the entire operation.

I'm using Norton Corporate Client Security (Firewall & AV) and I've excluded Norton from the processs

What am I doing wrong?

1.Are you using the "Clean & Fix my Computer (CFMC)" tool or the "Registry Cleaning" tool, with the 'Normal system scan policy'?

2.CFMC does not honour (at least for Avast and Alwil) the check boxed 'Anti-Virus Anti-Malware software in the CFMC 'Additional safety'.

Despite this checked box CFMC still tries to remove empty folders for Avast/Alwil, while Avast prevents the removal.

The result is that jv16PT ‘Freezes’.

Being a newbie I'm not sure I follow.

- Yes I am using CFMC

- RAM should not be an issue, it has 3 Gigs of RAM

- All boxes under 'Additional Safety' are checked

- What is 'Avast/Alwil? I don't think I have any software like that on my PC.

Also, what is the difference between fix and remove? Or in other words, when should you use what and why?

Avast/Alwil is a Anti Virus/Firewall program like Norton/Symantec.

Despite the checked 'Anti-Virus Anti-Malware' box in the 'Additional Safety' options, jv16PT 2011 CFMC still tries to remove empty files/directories that are under control of Avast/Alwil. Avast/Alwil prevents/blocks this and CFMC freezes. The (temporary) solution was to add the keywords Avast and Alwil to the CFMC 'Ignore words' option.

You should try the same but now with keywords related to Norton AV/Firewall like e.g. Norton and/or Symantec .. etc.., but without the underscore.

I always specify 'Fix' to at least attempt to fix the scanned registry error.

However in practice less than 10% of the registry errors can be fixed. If fixing is not possible than the registry entries will be 'Removed'.

jv16 got stuck on trying to remove a Lenovo folder. I added 'Lenovo' to the Ignore Words and it runs fine now.

Now you mention it, I am using Lenovo thinkpads T60 with XP-SP3 and X201i with W7 x86. I had this problem once too during jv16PT-2011 beta testing!

I removed the Lenovo folder "by hand", I remember vaguely that it had to do with authorisation/ownership.

Adding the keyword Lenovo to the CFMC 'Ignore list' excludes more items during the CFMC scan than you probably want.

Now you know which Lenovo folder it is try to remove it "by hand".
