Couple (minor?) things re: 2011

First, MANY THANKS for the Action History feature! I've looked for something like this for a long time!

A nitpick: I still have to manually resize columns, to fit the entries, when I make any list windows bigger--an "autosize width" option would really be welcome.

Another nitpick? In the Startup Manager, selecting "All starting apps & libs" plus "Hide Windows system files" and "Show only apps" yield items like:

explorer.exe

logonui.exe

shmgrate.exe

services.exe (twice!)

lsass.exe (three times)

spoolsv.exe

all of which AFAICT are official Windows entries--is it not possible to ID (and hide) these MS entries?

One more question: in the Software Uninstaller, when I select/check any of the "Installed software w/o uninstall info" items and then click Uninstall, nothing at all happens. No indicate of a mouse click; I don't get the Uninstall pop-up, nothing, no message in the window below either. Why's that? For any of the entries where the "Sofware" field is blank/empty, how do I analyze what these are (i.e. how did jv16 know to put them there in the first place)?

I submitted this bug report last month:

Bug summary: Software Uninstaller: many items in the "Installed software without uninstall info" group have no discernible reason to be in the list.

Description: There is a name in the Software column, but

* Author =

* Version = N/A

* Installation date = N/A

* Line context menu has no "Explore" and no "Open in RegEdit" option.

* "Uninstall" does nothing.

* "Find more information online" does a useless Google search for "." Perhaps the search should be for the name in the Software column.

Well, they were installed with Windows and thus yes, I think they should be considered Windows system files.

Isn't one purpose of these selections after all to be able to readily identify what is supposed to be there (and all Windows entries are supposed to be there) and what is not or what has been installed by other software...

Well, I do not think that every Windows file is considered to be a windows system file. e.g explorer.exe, word.exe, excel.exe, msconfig.exe, regedit.exe ..etc.... are ALL Windows applications but not necessarily Windows system files! Windows system files are (IMHO) the core files needed to run the W7, Vista and XP operating system.

Let's wait for the developer (jv16) to tell us what he considers to be Windows system files.

In what region/country/alternate universe are Word and Excel "Windows" files???!!! Those are Microsoft Office files. What we should be talking/agreeing about (at least this is what I meant and isn't that hard to understand is it) is ALL FILES THAT ARE INSTALLED BY MICROSOFT WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM. Build a computer, install Windows first--that is all I am talking about.

Maybe it is impossible to distinguish a Windows OS file from a Microsoft Office or Intellimouse or Flight Simulator or Streets & Trips (whatever other ancillary software MS sells) but that is what I'd hope/expect jv16 to be able to do if possible.

As far as I remember jv16 considers the files in the Windows system directories as Windows system files.

But I must admit that was in a specific context.

I cannot retrace the topic, but there was a discussion about that in relationship with some options in jv16 PowerTools File Finder and File Cleaner where the user can select "skip system files to improve safety".

Maybe the developer can confirm this or not.

Edit:

I found this in the Handbook of jv16 PowerTools 2007:

"Skip system directories to improve safety tells the tool not to list any files or subdirectories from the system directory (by default C:\Windows), the system settings directory (only in NT systems, by default C:\Documents and Settings\), or from their subdirectories."

Notice that in the more recent manuals the concept "system directory" is not defined anymore.

I also found some posts of jv16 on this forum wherein he wrote that C:\Windows and subdirs are system directories just as C:\Documents and Settings.
