Text File Disappears
Follow-up: I did the same test using a Word 2003 document - simple filed named 'encryption-test.doc' containing 1 word created in the same folder as above. Encrypted using default settings and 'test' as the password. Following encryption, which appeared to proceed normally, the file was gone. Again, searched entire drive - no file.
I tried File Recovery on the subject folder. PT found the 2 'encryption-test.txt' files and the 'encryption-test.doc' file, but the file names had been altered. I renamed the files to '.txt' and '.doc' appropriately, and tried opening using File Tool, Decrypt. When opening, the password was requested, but the files contained gibberish.
The recovered '.txt' files had been renamed to 0000006A.255 (or something similar) and the recovered '.doc' file had been renamed with an extension similar to '.doc27E9CBD_encrypted'.
Either something is wrong with PT or I'm using the encrypt function incorrectly.
Uriel wroteAnyone else have this issue? I copied and pasted a user name and password to note pad and tried twice to encrypt it with the encryption utility in file tool and both times it disappeared off the face of the earth. Yup, the file just vanished.
Yes. It seems there's a bug. I submitted this Bug Tracker report:
- ID: xxxxxx
Bug summary: A file can be lost when using the File Encryptor.
Description: To reproduce:
- 1. Create a file, named aaa.txt, containing any text content, on the desktop.
2. Start PowerTools and start the File Tool.
3. Drag aaa.txt to the File Tool window.
4. Select the file and click the Encrypt icon.
5. No "Advance security options" are checked.
6. Click Start without entering a password.
7. The file will disappear.

Note: If I use the "also encrypt the filename option," the issue does not happen.
rdtmk5 wroteFor whatever reason, when I use a password, it hiccups as described. Sounds like there's a fundamental flaw somewhere in the utility.
Yes. I changed my note.
It seems the program only works when the "also encrypt the filename" option is used.
The password thing is a second issue:
- ID: xxxxxx
Bug summary: The File Encryptor no longer requires use of a password.
Description: To reproduce:
- 1. Create a file, named aaa.txt, containing any text content, on the desktop.
2. Start PowerTools and start the File Tool.
3. Drag aaa.txt to the File Tool window.
4. Select the file and click the Encrypt icon.
5. The Start button is active even when a password has not been entered.

Again, looks like there are some basic functionality issues to sort out here.
I did the 'clean&fix' first after install. Found a lot of empty folders. Crashed while processing the found files. I think it froze the system XPSP3. There was an error but I don't have the data.
Bobbyjcy wroteLuckily, I did have a BK as I stated 'bout pulling a copy. What I didn't expect was that it worked easily. Thank Heaven it did!

Please see this forum thread about CFMC freezing during the cleanup of empty folders related to AntiVirus products!
