In the 2010 version I've never had this issue.

I took a screenshot of my disabled startup items in the 2010 version.

Then I enabled the disabled items and rebooted.

Next I uninstall jv16PowerTools 2010 and installed the new 2011 version.

I then attempted to disable the same startup items from before but their status doesn't change.

The program says "done" for each item and there's no error message.

The item remains enabled even after a reboot.

I've tried numerous times with this same result.

I'll have to go back to the 2010 version until this is resolved.

In both W7-x86 and XP-SP3 with jv16PT v2.0.0.1007 I can disable an item in the 'Startup Mgr' and enable it in either 'msconfig' or 'Startup Mgr'.

Good for you Leonardo!

As I've said, Startup Manager will not DISABLE the items on my Windows 7 X64 PC.

The 2010 version works without issue.

I can disable or enable at will.

I have the same problem under Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, a switch is not to enable or disable jv16 2011. About msconfig but it works. :

Is conceivable that it occurs only in 64-bit, but jv16 2010 worked without problems.

The jv16PT 2011 Startup Manager is quite changed e.g. made 'fully compatible' with windows msconfig!

An item disabled/enabled with the jv16PT Startup Manager can be enabled/disabled with windows msconfig!

I can confirm this and I run Win XP 32-bit!

Did it just on my other Windows XP 32-bit tested.

Here, the function works with the enabled / disabled in the Startup Manager also not jv16 2011th The problem seems to fronting jv16 2011, worked in 2010, jv16 forever.

Perhaps more to the info, both (64-bit and 32-bit) and the German versions have jv16 2011, I currently only in English.

Due to the PT2011 changes to make it "fully compatible" with msconfig, these issues may be a "transition" bug.

This is a case I encountered during beta testing when looking at PT2010 and PT2011 differences (I probably brought it on myself while trying to identify the cause of some Startup Manager bugs):

  • If msconfig-->Startup tab shows NO disabled tasks, and

registry keys similar to these exist,

    • ... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder\C:^ProgramData^Microsoft^Windows^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^McAfee Security Scan Plus.lnk

      ... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\ButtonMonitor.exe

then the PowerTools Startup Manager is out-of-sync with msconfig.

Deleting those startupfolder and/or startupreg keys gets Startup Manager and msconfig synchronized. You can then do Disable / Enable with either program.

If you plan to delete the keys, save a RegEdit export of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig first.

As I confirmed earlier, enabling/disabling Startup items with PT2011 in 32-bit Win XP does not work. I have no disabled tasks in the list (MSConfig --> Startup), and I looked at the registry, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\ does not exist (hmmm...)

I also have no HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig reg key.

I have 3 machines using Windows 7 x64 and none of them have that key.

Of course I've never used msconfig in these pc's. Perhaps that is why, it was never created.

I also checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Shared Tools, and there is no MSConfig reg key.

I have new information to enable you to switch from the program jv16 2011th

It looks as if the Runtime C + + 2005, Microsoft is missing or incorrectly installed.

After installing the free runtime (Microsoft Download Center) does the switching.

Actually, I can confirm this!! I downloaded and installed this file: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=32bc1bee-a3f9-4c13-9c99-220b62a191ee&displaylang=en and now enabling/disabling works. Thanks!

Forget not the correct version of 32-bit or 64-bit (Windows) initially accept the download and install.

Maybe this fixes Runtime other problems, but I had no other problems with jv16 2011.

That's it!

I submitted this to the Bug Tracker:

  • ID: xxxxxx

Bug summary: If the user has never started msconfig, the Startup Manager Disable does not work.

    Description: To reproduce:

    • 1. Rename HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig_

      2. Do NOT start msconfig.

      3. Start Powertools and start the Startup Manager.

      4. Try to disable a Run task in the list.

      5. Observe that the task stays enabled.

    Version 2.0.0.1007 with x64 Windows 7

    Submitted: 2/22/2011

In the meantime, here's an obvious workaround for anyone who has never run msconfig:

  • 1. Start-->Run-->msconfig-->Startup tab-->OK (on Win 7 at least, it immediately created those keys, which are empty).

    2. Start PowerTools and start the Startup Manager.

    3. Try to disable a Run task. It now will work.
