With default settings, it ran for about three or four minutes (per debug log time stamps) then stopped using CPU (per Task Manager). The only sign of life thereafter was movement of the progress indicator. After 27 minutes. I can confirm that this does NOT happen on my W7 x86 notebook, Vista x86(which I could use for just 30 minutes) and my XP-SP3 laptop.

For what it is worth, a short observation for the v2.0.0.1002(RC1) Startup Manager compared to Windows 'msconfig':

Windows 'msconfig' Startup showed 3 entries for nVidia graphical SW and 1 entry for Windows Defender, which was replaced by Windows Security Essentials!

jv16PT2011-RC1 Startup manager did not show the above 4 entries, all other entries were ok!

PS: Are there any Vista beta testers left?

I haven't been contributing to the beta testing of 2011, for which my apologies. But this seems as good a place as any to post this.

I got an email this evening announcing the final release of 2011, which seemed unusual considering that as of this morning it sounded like it still needed a lot more work. Is this essentially a "that'll have to do for now" thing, with probably several upgrades and patches still to come? I know you were originally hoping to get it out before the end of 2010, but obviously new features and other changes turned out to more troublesome than anticipated. Incidentally, I did order the upgrade (used my bookmark for your site, naturally, since I'm one more who has little or no faith in email links).

I was also surprised to see there was no equivalent announcement here anywhere (that I could see).

Considering the major changes from 2010 to 2011, I would assume that uninstall-fresh install is the preferred way to do this?

IMO, there is not a large number of important bugs in version 2.0.0.1007. Here's a list of the ones I have reported in the Bug Tracking system: http://www.macecraft.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=27968#p27968

Here's my assessment of them:

. A file can be lost when using the File Encryptor. Bug ID = dddddd.

. The File Encryptor no longer requires use of a password. Bug ID = dddddd.

This could be quite damaging if an unsuspecting user did not have a backup of the file(s) being encrypted.

. A Registry Finder scan can find the "Search word" references in HKLM, but miss those in HKCU and HKUS. Bug ID = xxxxxx.

It is important that this one be fixed. Otherwise, we can't trust the Registry Finder results.

. Closing PowerTools with right click-->Close on its taskbar icon can sometimes wreck the PowerTools GUI. Bug ID = zzzzzz.

When this one happens, the user is forced to use the Task Manager to clear the desktop mess. It does no damage, but is a rather embarrassing bug.

. Global Ignore List does not work for line tags. Bug ID = aaaaaa.

This would be more an "improvement" than a bug fix. It would enable a user controlled multiple tool ignore feature.

. If Service Manager (for example) is started twice in the same session without closing the list first, the new list window will be blank. Bug ID = xxxxxx.

. Backup Tool, Custom Restore: "right click-->Open in RegEdit" sometimes does not work correctly. Bug ID = xxxxxx.

. Double click column resizing sometimes works, but changes its mind an instant later. Bug ID = yyyyyy.

. In a new session, Backup Tool does not remember the last column sort if it was done on the "Created" column. Bug ID = aaaaaa.

. Backup Tool-->Copy backup structure to clipboard is not working right. Bug ID = aaaaaa.

These are not serious, but they do slightly disrupt the smoothness of tool use.

. Startup Manager does not list RUN commands which have no path and no file extension. Msconfig does list such commands. Bug ID = bbbbbb.

. If the user has never started msconfig, the Startup Manager Disable does not work. Bug ID = cccccc.

These are issues about the "full compatibility" of Startup Manager with msconfig.

The other bugs in the list are harmless and rather obscure. That is, a user has really to look closely even to notice most of them.

Yes, you should uninstall 2010 and then install 2011 unless you have specific reasons for keeping 2010. They will run side-by-side if you wish.

I feel confident that 2011 will be upgraded and patched a few times, yes. There are still some issues that Jouni needs to fix. :

Actually, PowerTools 2011 was released on February and it was announced here: http://www.macecraft.com/news/204/

The email about the release was sent out now because we wanted to spread the load to our servers. If we would send out all the newsletters about a new release at the same time, it would badly flood our support systems and possibly jam our web servers as well.

We had some major problems during the release day and a few days after that due to delays in order handling. We wanted to fix all the problems before sending out the emails about the new version to avoid similar problems. While we are having some problems receiving the automated response from PayPal, everything else is going much smoother this time.

We will be switching to a new payment processor soon (before any other new release) so this kind of problems should be avoided in the future.

It would be a good idea to install PT 2011 to a new directory, not over 2010.

Open issues in jv16PT_2011_v2.0.0.1007 that are not reported else ware. (as far as I can see)!

1. XP-SP3 and W7 x86:

File Tools -> File Recovery -> search in c:\ for .pdf files -> Undelete 1st file -> Undelete 2nd file -> Undelete 3rd file

-> only close the File Recovery window -> Windows Task Manager shows that task jv16PT keeps using 50% of my dual core processor. Only closing of jvPT16 will end this 'processing loop'.

Comment jv16: This is indeed a bug, but it's not very serious. It will be fixed in time.

2. XP-SP3 and W7 x86,

Startup Manager does not report ‘memory usage’ and ‘page file usage’ information for e.g. 32bit ZoneAlarm Client! (zlclient.exe)

Comment jv16: I cannot see this issue being fixed any time soon. For some reason, Windows API doesn't return correct information for certain running software. There must be something I do wrong, but gladly it's mainly a cosmetic issue.

3. Win 7 x86 Pro (original reported by user Avatarr)

........I have noticed in the 2011 version that when I cycle through the list of scanned items with the arrow keys, not always is the header updated. To be clear, this never happens if an item is clicked, only when the arrow keys are employed. Further, this behaviour is inconsistent. It does not always happen; and when it does, it varies from item to item........

Leonardo: I can confirm this for W7 x86 Pro.

Only when selecting an item from the scan result list using the UP/DOWN arrow key's and scrolling rather fast.

The data displayed in the header is the data of an 1-4 line back previous scrolled item!

Comment jv16: Minor issue that can be reproduced.

4. XP-SP3

CFMC does not honour (at least for Avast and Alwil) the check boxed 'Anti-Virus Anti-Malware software

in the CFMC 'Additional safety'. Despite this checked box CFMC still tries to remove empty folders for Avast/Alwil, while Avast prevents the removal.

The result is a ‘Freeze’ application error.
