RegSupremePro -Resource hungry? ( Resolved 26Sep05)

Hello,

The following is a peculiar symptom when running RegSupremePro doing a "Normal" registry scan,TaskManager shows memory usage of about 80MB.

However, when I study the entries,with the program being static - no scrolling or mouse movement - gradually memory

usage is creeping up.In about 10 minutes it has now increased

to 125 MB,with CPU usage fluctuating between 30% and 97%.

Actually I chose to exit the program before it would lock up the computer.

Since no more scanning is being done (presumably),what causes

the increase in memory usage as well as high CPU usage?

Thanks for attending to my query.

I hope you find a solution soon.

I find that I just can't delete all entries shown and be out

in a few minutes.Hence my time spent sorting through the scan

results.If I don't, I know I will be in major trouble.

In my opinion there is no such thing as 100% safe Reg cleaner.I don't care who makes it.You have to set up an

exclusion list.Otherwise you"ll be spending a lot of time

searching and wondering why certain programs all of a sudden

don't work any more.

To JV was not directed at you,but more to anyone reading

this topic.

I have just tested the CPU-usage.

RAINMETER says:

CPU-usage on RegSupreme and RS Pro go up to 100% with nothing else running or opened. Enormous!

And I use a Pent4 3.2 Ghz HyperThread.......

Hi Tausend,

Yes this is definitely a problem.

However,as you can see in the previous post,

the developer JV is aware of it.

To be fair,you will find that most scanning engines use a

lot of CPU or Memory.Sometimes both.

Once the scanning has stopped you should see a sharp drop

in either CPU usage or Memory usage.

At least that is my experience.

However in this case it doesn't.

It would be helpful,I think,if you also posted the memory usage.One for while the scan is in progress and another

when the scan has stopped and you are looking at the results.

Also remember that RS (Pro) and PowerTools use seperat threads to acomplise there tasks.

Therefor CPU and Memory usage will be high when using.

Probebly there goes something wrong with these threads, and they keep eating resources.

But im sure JV can find this bug :).

Well,I'm back.I tried yesterday,but just after trying to post

the server would not accept my post."Too many connections".

You're a nice guy,but I think you're missing the gist of the problem.Nobody was saying that the scanning time was too long

or that I don't have the patience to wait for it to finish.

My scan takes about 5 minutes and I expect CPU usage to be high.And you're right about doing something else.During most scans I usually walk away and make a coffee or something.

After the scan I take at least 10 minutes to analyze the entries.The reason is that since there is no Ignore or Exclusion panel,I have to do this by hand.

On this subject I do not agree with JV.I understand that

RS Pro is designed to be a lightweight application,but I think it's doing a great disservice to all the RS Pro users,

not to include an Ignore panel.To me that is almost a mandatory requirement for this type of application.

I know BlackDex suggested a method in another post,but I'm

sorry, that is a workaround and not the way it should be.

But I digress.As to the CPU & Memory problem is after the scan that CPU fluctuates between medium and high 50-98%.

Memory usage is increasing constantly.

This is all while I'm checking the entries found with only an occasional mouse movement.

I know from experience that eventually this will cause the

system to lockup.

I had this happen before with some programs.Some were solved by the developer.The ones that were not resolved ended up

in the trashcan.I hate to have to do this with RS Pro,since

I paid good money for it.

It simply has to do with the way the program is coded.

Not necessarily simple to solve,but that's the reason behind

those kinds of problems.

Now for finding out how much CPU or Memory a program uses:

For Win XP , press Alt,Control,Delete.That brings up

TaskManager.Under Processes, check for RegSupremePro.exe

Then check in the CPU and Memory columns for the usage.

It is quite possible that with your amount of RAM and virtual memory,that you don't experience too much trouble.

But even at 1 GB RAM (for me)I notice a lot of slowdown

of everyhing.Also, not everybody has that much RAM.

Thanks for any solution you may have.

I have just checked the memory-usage while running RegS Pro. It goes up to 11.000 k .

You say: "After the scan I take at least 10 minutes to analyze the entries".........well I don`t ever analyze the stuff found by JV16-RegSup or RegSup Pro. I just mark them and delete those. Over the years I have learned to trust the Juoni-tools blind and completely.

I also must say, that I have never had resons to re-install backups or fumble on formatting XP again because of deleted stuff from registry.

You say your scan takes about 5 minutes. Well you might have more stuff installed than I, but my scans take half a minute at the most. And that`s what I ment: I personally would not mind JV-tools being "slower working" and therefore comforting the cpu.

I think you`ve got it a bit wrong there........

RegSupreme is the "lightweight-one", RegSup Pro the "middleweight" and JV-Power the bomber-one ( I like to call it "The Scalpell").

system to lockup".............my hardware is nearly completely known to you now and I haven`t had a lock-up for nearly 2 years now, neither with games & stuff nor JV-tools.

You might be able to rise your virtual memory to give more "speed" to the job. After all....you`ve got 1 Gig Ram, so you could go up to min: 2500 max (if there is enough room left).

Besides......some time ago I decided to place my virtual drive from C to another partition which I think is better than before.

IF you raise virtual memory and/or place it elsewhere..........DO defrag the partition afterwards!

Well 1 Gig Ram isn`t bad, infact it is perfect.

We all know that XP runs "comfortable" itself with at least 512 Ram. All additional is better and does not harm, let the individuale purse decide.

My 2 Gig RAM was a special offer from my dealer who plugged the hardware together.

I DID have once a problem with RegSupreme Pro!

Here is the story:

For an experiment I have tried the OMEGA-driver for my ATI-graphic-card instead of the regular ATI-Catalyst-driver.

Mr. Chris soandso, the maker of OMEGA, also supplies an additional tool called RAD-LOCKER which is very useful for adjusting various items in different games like gamma, T&L aso.

After installing RAD-LOCKER and using RegSupreme thereafter, RegS kept finding "useless rad-locker stuff".............. with the result, that rad-locker had to be always re-installed.

In other words..........RegSupreme damaged rad-locker!

I e-mailed Chris with screenshots and he got 2 more rad-locker-updates that night(!!!).

I also mailed JV but they saw the reason in rad-locker. (which was true!)

Finally rad-locker worked and all was well!

For me - at rest after a scan,memory usage is 80MB and creeps up to 130MB after 10 minutes.I have not checked how high it will go if left alone.

One thing is for sure,I recognize those symptoms.Runaway memory with a program invariably leads to lockup.

During run of RegS Pro the cpu jumped up to 99%/ramusage to 14.900 k

As soon as the search ended (found 3 rotten entries) cpu fell down to zero while Ram-usage stayed at 15.000 k.

When I closed RS Pro usage fell to zero after 5 seconds.

That reminds me........there HAS been another problem with RegSupreme (lightweight!) on my son`s ACER-notebook.

To gain some room in registry I had installed the "try-out-RegSup on his machine and he started the search.

On aggressive there were about 400 items found and he deleted the lot with the result that some of his special microsoft-progs didn`t work anymore.

A prog which only micro-dealers use; Michael has a small software-business and is Microstuff-salesman.

Along with that another server-prog did not work as he is using the laptop also as a server-station for his office. PC-ANYWHERE was also killed. (I don`t understand the server-stuff to be honest)

Anyway.........just in returning the back-ups from RS did NOT heal the damaged progs, he had to install them again. (He was a bit annoyed....)

Therefore I could not convince him to buy and use RS.

The other day I installed my second 19' TFT monitor just for a try for duality.

With ATI Control Center I was able to fix both. I just couldn`t manage to receive an identical quality in gamma/colours no matter what.

In the end I blamed the graphic-card ATI Radeon 9800XT for it cos it has only one DVI-connection whereas the second moni had to go on VGA-cable.......never mind.

It is called PERFECT DISK 7.0

Listen to this.I decided to install a fresh copy of RegSupreme (not RS Pro)

Guess what? CPU and Memory usage are totally different.(for me)

RegSupreme

Run (no scan) CPU=00 % Memory=7,895KB

Scanning CPU=98 % Memory=10,687KB

After scan(rest) CPU=00 % Memory=10,483KB

Condition=stable No increase in Memory

Scan time 2 minutes 30 seonds approx 500k keys

(Impressive!)

Now look at

RegSupreme Pro Registry Cleaner tab

Run (no scan yet) CPU=00 % Memory=8,948KB slow creep up

After 12 minutes Memory has increased to 80,285KB

Scanning CPU=98 % Memory still creeping up,but faster now.

After scan (rest) CPU=00 % Memory now at 130,000KB and still

rising.

Scan time-(scan started from low Mem usage) 5 minutes.

Scan time-(started at the 80 MB level) 9 minutes.

It is obvious that the constant increase in Memory is a drag

on the scan engine and increases the scanning time.

(The reason I left RS Pro running-no scan,was that I was

called away.I left everything running,but had not started

the scan yet.When I came back,I was surprised to see how much

Memory usage had increased.)

For the time being I'll do the Reg scan with RegSupreme.

I'm sorry, but I can't tolerate the runaway Memory problem

of RegSupreme Pro.

Just thought it might be interesting to see some comparison figures.

Results on JV16 Power-Tools Version 1.5.1.307 :

CPU-usage never higher than 50%

memory 14.000 k at the most, dropping to nearly zero when trough and finished.

Results: found nothing

I am now willing to presume that one of your RAMMERS seems to be defect cos this is ENORMOUS!

There is nothing wrong with my RAMs :)

I have at least 25 scanning programs on this machine.

You know,the usual.System,AntiVirus,Anti Malware,Registry,

Search,Duplicate search,general,documents and photographs and

some other specific scanners.

None of them display the errant behaviour of RegSupreme Pro.

When they scan,CPU is high(expected).Memory usage is medium,

depending on the program.Some divide their efforts,showing

let's say, 50% CPU and some increased Memory usage.

But after the scan they all come down in CPU and Memory and

are stable.

Like I said before,it's all in the coding.

Also,any pictures,let's say 5MB,open in a flash.

So do PDF's of 10MB.*

You can't do that if some RAM modules are kaput.

Besides,I already did a RAM integrity test.Everything is OK.

*BTW,with FoxIt PDF Reader,not with Adobe Reader,that one is way slower.

Everything aside agrees with me.See his post earlier in

this thread.

Thanks very much for looking into this and resolving

the problem.I look forward to using the latest update of

RegSupreme Pro.

This may very well also solve the problems that some people had when they could not click any buttons in the program.

It might have had the same origin.
