Version 2.0.0.964 on x64 Windows 7

Actions:

  • 1. Run the History Cleaner.

    2. Select only the "Windows - Recent Documents" line.

    3. First, look at the entries with the Show Data feature and RegEdit.

    4. Click Clear and say Yes to the backup dialogue.

    5. Use the Backup Tool to examine the backup just made.

    6. The program did NOT backup the entries and data just removed.

The debug log will be attached in the Bug Tracker report.

With XP-Pro-SP3 the Backups are actually made.

I did a Restore, which was reported successful, but the cleared+restored items very rarely show up in a following History Cleaner run.

After several repeated restores jv16PT.exe freezes with the display of the 'Application Error Screen'.

If still needed I can sent Debug Log + BugReport to BugTracker!

Did you actually look at the Entries.reg in the backup structure? With my x64 Windows 7 system, what was in that backup is missing the Names and Data under the keys. Just because the name we give a backup is in the Backup Tool list, that does not prove the backup is correct.

Attached is a list of the entries in the History Cleaner Backup I took when I cleaned the Windows - Recent Documents.

The list looks rather 'empty' to me. But honestly I do not know how it is supposed to look!

Thanks for reporting this guys, this seems to be a quite serious issue. It seems to be related to binary type registry data, which is not very common.

I'll report the progress on fixing this issue here.

The issue is now fixed. I'll see if I can get more fixes to the next build. In any case, it will be released later in this week.

We will also switch to a newer version of the product that we use to compress the executable of jv16 PowerTools. This hopefully reduces the number of false positives reported by Anti-Virus products.

Here is a preview of the upcoming new build:

Can you confirm that this issue has been fixed?

I am afraid it looks not fixed.

Version 2.0.0.965 on XP-Pro-SP3

Actions taken:

1. Ran the History Cleaner.

2. Selected only the "Windows - Recent Documents" line, listed are 8 documents.

3. Click Clear and say Yes to the backup dialogue.

4. Use the Backup Tool to examine the backup just made, it looks the same as in build 964, rather empty!.

6. The program seems NOT to backup the entries and data just removed, after a backup restore the 8 documents do not show in the following History Cleaner run.

Could you browse to the backup directory of this specific backup (e.g. via PowerTools > Backup Tool, find the backup in question, right-click > Explore) and paste here the contents Entries.reg and Entries_bak.reg?

Issue still confirmed, working on a fix...

You can blame me for those bugs. : The first fix did correct some serious bugs but there was still one small issue I had overlooked which I have fixed now.

Please try this:

http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/betas/jv16PT_2.0.0.966.exe

Yes, build 966 solved the problem.

A valid backup is created (backup size=24KB in build 966 in stead of =1KB in build 965)

After the restore of this backup the cleared 'Windows Recent Used' entries shop up again in the following 'History Cleaner' scan!!

EDITED

Attached is the backup file of the erased 'Windows Recent Documents' from the 'History Cleaner' scan.

A new version with this issue fixed has now been released, you can read more from: http://www.macecraft.com/news/198/

Thank you all for reporting this issue!
