One cleanup or other has killed Norton Internet 2010

I have run a number of tools and just nnotice Norton 2010 is dead!

I reloaded the imige created after the odd registry compressing and Norton wasn't running on that. Vista secuity center wasn't saying anything but there was no task bar icon and the program when selected just says it wasn't running and I needed to reboot which didn't do anything. It klooked as if somthing killed the access to the interface accessed from the takbar or program but the main parts were probably still running. So have now reinstalled Norton 2010 and will go back to the old JV16 rather than be a beta tester!

AND I have just had to uninstall and reinstall Flash Player, how many more!

I tried to understand what you were doing but I have no clue what so ever:

What did you expect from Vista security centre, Which program did you select, Why was a reboot needed and what do you mean with "didn't do anything"?

Flash player was no longer working so it had to be fully uninstalled and reinstalled

What image did you reload and why?

Something I did with JV19n 2010 f****k up the working of Norton 2010 and as I had had a problem with the registry compacter I had created an image of the HD (clearly running what has been acting as beta software I should have done so before!)and when I found Norton 2010 was messed up I reinstalled it but the damage was on the image already.

What did you expect from Vista security centre, Which program did you select, Why was a reboot needed and what do you mean with "didn't do anything"?

Even I know if security isn’t working the Vista security centre is quick to come up if security isn’t running. So Norton 2010 was working but couldn’t be accessed. I rebooted as tselecting 2010 just resulted in a message not working reboot

I wasn’t JV16 removed something that stopped the task bar icon from being loaded, it also stoped the 2010 program working as from desk top icon and direct in the folder it just said it wasn’t running and reboot the pc which didn’t do anything.

4.So have now reinstalled Norton 2010

Me for being so stupid as to think a new version of JV16 was safe!!!

Well the 2009 version hasn’t messed up my PC programs which the new one did in one go!

Could you tell me exactly:

1) What did you do with PowerTools?

2) What exactly happened after that?

3) Have you tried to restore the backups created by PowerTools?

If you, for example, ran the Registry Cleaner, what settings did you use? The default ones? And so on.

As I remember I ran reg cleaner looked and clean and fix at most programs, I ran Optimise in Service manager thinking it would advise (in the hand book it says The Optimize feature quickly analyzes your system and makes a suggestion what services could be disabled in order to improve the start-up time of your computer) But could see no selections so closed it. I ran registry compacter which then had a very fast, I think error msg, as rebooting and on reboot (it said it was unable to compact some parts and would do so on reboot)Vista blocked it and once allowed came up with a DOS window and finished. I was a bit worried so then created a disc image.

It was after that i saw Norton icon hadn’t loaded and put the image back. No I didn’t try a restore from the backups, should have but I did go through things before running cleanup and didn’t see anything.

It strikes me the most likely problems was in service manager though the impression from the handbook was optimize advised not did changes and I closed it when I couldn’t see and advice.

I urge you to add the words Norton and Symantec to the Registry Cleaner>Ignore words list when running Norton products on your system. Also ensure that Tamper Protection is active in the settings of NIS or NAV or Norton 360.

Good idea, have added the names and tamper protection was on!

With Norton and Symantec added (I noticed firewalls etc were excluded any way) I have run the Registry Cleaner again and checked everything line by line (I do check normally but not so carefully). There were lots of flash player entries , hardly surprising as it was uninstalled and reinstalled, but nothing I could see relating to Norton 2010, Norton or Symantec. I rebooted and the task bar icon is there and working. I have looked at the back up files and though there is much I can make no sence of I can’t see any thing again relating to Norton 2010, Norton or Symantec.

My own view is my running optimise in Service Manager might have been the cause even though the manual says this advises, as said before I couldn’t see advice but didn’t know what form this would take sa may have missed it. Can someone confirm optimise doesn’t actually DO anything or is the hand book wrong?

Running XP-Pro-SP3:

In the past months (beta testing jv16PT-2010) I used the Service Manager ->Optimize function several times on different systems.

On a rare occasions nothing was found, most of the time 2-3 items were check boxed by the 'Optimizer' for which I than selected the required 'Disable' to disable the functions.

Never there was done any harm!

Thanks, now I know what to look for I can see some services ticked. Some I wouldn't risk stopping relating to networking it selected but there are a few that would have no effect on the way my PC’s are used (it might have been effected by the other PC is doing an off line imaging). At some time I may select some of those “safe” ones but non I could see should have effected Norton so it must have been the registry cleaner or clean and fix my computer that effected things. Hopefully adding Norton and Symantec has sorted this now as nothing happened when I ran the cleaner this morning.

Below is a link to an excellent reference concerning services of Windows. It lists the services for XP, Vista, and Windows 7. It shows what the default status is for each service. And then it provides a "Safe" status and "Tweaked" status. Over the years from XP, Vista, to Windows 7 at the present time, I have typically set Windows services to the "safe" position and never had any problems.

Services that are installed by third party software such as Norton need to be separately reviewed as to whether they can be disabled, set to manual, or must run automatic.

Thanks a very usfull site, I found I coud disable many services with no problem. A few I was less confident about so left.

I have also ran Clean and Fix again. I found there is a further Ignore Words option under this so have added Norton and Symantec again. A reboot had the Norton 2010 sitting and running from the task bar still.

hi, i have nis 2010 17.7.0.12 on windows 7 64 bit i for the life of me i cannot reproduce any of the above problems and trust me i have tried.

I have installed JVC 2010 on my desktop pc. This has much the same softwaere as my laptop. I have run all the same programs with a reboot between each this time. Nothing happend to Nortion 2010 or Java this time. There was no errer on registy compacters reboot but I had to run it in windows to get 2 hiveas compacted as it reported the level of compaction under DOS was unsafe.

The majer diffrence is the laptop has some HP programs running that may be interfered with somthing?

The product has now been changed in a way everything relating to Norton and Symatec are ignored by default. This can be disabled by unchecking "Anti-Virus Software" from the Additional Safety tab of either the Registry Cleaner or Clean and fix my computer.

This change will be included to the next released build.
