I am Kim Komando's editorial director. I stumbled on this question while researching something else. I actually wrote the answer to which Jackie referred. Kim was on vacation at the time.
I misspoke in that answer. I should have said to click Fix, not to simply delete the crud. Unfortunately, I didn't have jv16 in front of me when I wrote it.
I don't like recommending registry cleaners, generally. Most people don't have enough expertise to be messing with their registry. In addition, every crook worldwide seems to offer a registry cleaner. Some could probably do serious damage. However, I think Macecraft's product is excellent. If someone is ready to give up on their computer, it can't hurt to try it. I suspect lots of people replace computers unnecessarily.
The word crud was used to keep things simple. The average person wouldn't know a registry key from a house key.
You can find the reference to jv16 at http://www.komando.com/tips/index.aspx?id=7945&page=3
