When will Registry Compactor be compatible with Windows 7? Thank you.
Registry Compactor Compatibility with Windows 7
cousintim wroteWhen will Registry Compactor be compatible with Windows 7? Thank you.
If it is possible, then yes. The Registry Compactor works by Windows API calls, all the compactor does is ask Windows to compact the registry. If this feature is not available in Windows 7 then there is very little we can do about it, but if it is (why would they have removed it?), we will make it to work in W7 as well.
This was on a Windows 7 (6.1.7100 32 bit) evaluation copy
Registry Compaction:
- 1. Ran Windows update which created a restore point
2. Ran ERUNT which backed up the registry hives
3. Ran NTREGOPT which reported an 18% reduction in space due to its compaction
4. Restarted windows
5. Ran PT2009 v.1.9.0.580 Registry Compactor which reported 0.66% reduction in space due to its compaction
6. Restarted windows
7. Restored the ERUNT registry backup
8. Restarted windows
9. Ran PT2009 v.1.9.0.580 Registry Compactor which reported 0.79% reduction in space due to its compaction
10. It seems the ERDNT restore at step 7 resulted in a compacted registry ...
11. Restarted windows
12. Ran NTREGOPT which reported a 1% reduction in space due to its compaction
13. Restarted windows
14. The only issue during all this: the Security hive could not be accessed for compaction. This is a known issue of unknown cause but little actual consequence.
So it seems registry compaction works OK with Windows 7 32 bit.
However, three users have made forum reports that they had to do significant system recovery after using the PT2009 Registry Compactor on Windows 7 x64.
Therefore, I suspect jv16 turned off the Registry Compactor in PT2009 v.1.9.0.590 for all Windows 7 systems for extra safety. The issue will probably be resolved for PT20xx sometime after the actual release of Windows 7 by Microsoft ...

My advice is, dont even think about using jv16 registry manipulating tools on Windows 7 x64. You might even consider not using jv16 registry manipulation tools on ANY
drob wroteSame problem here, under Win7 x64 RTM i get "this feature is not available..."
This is by design. Because of the reports we received relating to Win7 and PowerTools' Registry Compator the feature is no longer available under Win7. This might change in the future if it is possible to do something about the issue.

To me, this is a big loss in functionality. I very much hope that it can be restored in the future.
do with it in readyness for W7 x64. I wiped the hard drive and set it up for the Final release.
I remembered that I had to check out one or two programs for compatibility in x64 so I got another older hard drive
and installed x64 in it exactly as in the previous installation with my usual 4 partitions. My "Utility" programs go into F:\
When I had it setup I installed the programs I wanted to test, after the testing I uninstalled them.
Then just to see what remnants of those programs were left over in the registry I installed jv16 v590.
It did find some remnants though I just left them.
Then I decided to compact the registry, up popped this "This feature is not available with Windows 7",
yet it worked in the previous install.
And for the System Optimizer it stated "The System Optimizer is only available for XP and Vista "
The only difference is the hard drive. The first Drive was an older Samsung that is larger in height than the newer slimmer Hitache Drive
I had been using. Strange. Then I checked for any settings that I would have made in the Hitachi setup and I set them with no change.
BTW, I use a Trayless IcyBox hard drive caddy, all I have to do is open the little door, slide out the drive, slide in the other one,
close the door and re-start, all of 6 -7 seconds.
I have no idea what is going on, I have only the x64 version of W7 7100, not the x32 (x86) so its not that.
If the Registry Compactor does not work in the W7 I'll be dissapointed because I use it regularly.
i can assure you that x64 did work for me in jv16 590.
