I just uninstall the old regsupreme program and then ran pt lite. This key showed up. I "fixed" it and ran another scan and this key keeps showing up, IT WON"T GO AWAY. What good is the program if it doesn't really fix things?

I've had this happen with other things I've removed and rescanned, they keep coming back!

There is a sub directory, "count" after this key with a LOT of stuff in it.

EDIT: Doing some searching here, maybe this is a 'permission' issue? If so, since pt lite is supposed to be an entry level EASY program, maybe a tutorial on permission is needed. I am administrator on my computer, but have no clue how to change permissions.

Well, I advise you to be extremely careful with that kind of registry entries. Maybe it's better not to Fix or Delete them, because you might loose then your list with Most Frequent Used Programs, i.e. the program list when you click on the Windows "Start" button (in Vista).

When deleting the the "UserAssist\{750...." registry keys that Most Frequently Used Programs list will be empty (after a reboot).

Please read this post about those UserAssist entries.

I know principally the registry cleaner lists only those UserAssist entries containing broken file references, ready to be fixed or removed, but if you can't fix them (maybe indeed because of "Permissions" problems) it's better to add the word "UserAssist" (without quotes) to the Ignore Words tab of the Registry Cleaner available after switching to the "Extended user interface" of PTLIte.

Good advice, redseujac.

It's ironic it stumbles on removal of its sister application, RegSupreme.

But, after reading, it does so on other programs.

Honestly, if PT Lite is supposed to be an easy and simple tool, it misses the mark badly because of this, IMO.

In fact, I ran a scan with RegSupreme on my other computer, and it easily took care of UserAssist issues. Maybe it's better "out of sight, out of mind"? I would venture to say most users don't care about this stuff, they just want a CLEAN system with no fuss.

PT Lite is not progress, that I can see, at least for a newb.

Going back to RegSupreme and or RegSupreme Pro for now.

Again, just my newb opinion.

Since I run PTLite I never have seen UserAssist entries in the results list.

I used the default settings in the extended user interface. I ran the scan after uninstalling RegSupreme. Every scan showed the UserAssist entry and everytime I checked it for removal and every scan after, it showed up again.

EDIT: I went back and looked at the default settings for the Extended User Interface and there is an enty to 'not show entries that will be re created'. I tried using that, but still the same result. I tried the Simple User Interface and UserAssist does not show up.

Also, entries for Firefox and Macromedia showed up again after checking them for "fix".

I had uninstalled thes program prior to installing PT Lite.

I am going back to RegSupreme for now, but will keep watching here.

Yeah, I guess it's a bug.

I have now actually got rid of the UserAssist problem. I reinstalled RegSupreme, ran a scan and it cleared it, as I knew it would. Then I ran a scan in PT Lite, Extended User Interface and the UserAssist was gone, probably because something was over written? This is all over my head of course, but just thought I should pass along the info.

Finally, thanks for all your input and help.

You got rid of those particular "file does not exist" entries, but others will show up over time. The bug is still there.

BTW, as long as each program has its own directory in Program Files, you don't need to uninstall/reinstall. That is, you can run either one as you wish.

Yes, you are right. On my other computer, I uninstalled RegSupreme and ran a scan in both user interfaces and got the UserAssist bug.

Hopefully this will get cleared up. For now, I have decided to keep both PT Lite and RegSupreme on board.

Maybe another temporary fix is this: If you right click the selectd item (check mark userassist) a menu appears and two options are, 'remove from list' and 'never show again'.

What do you think of these and which is recommended?

Neither. Each has its place, but:

Remove from list just takes it off the current list window. It will show again the next time you scan.

Never show again creates an ignore list item for every single selected non-duplicated variation of key+name. The ignore list can become quite large over time.

For items like the userassist "does not exist" type, it is best to use the extended interface to put \Explorer\UserAssist\ (for example) in the ignore words tab. Then it will ignore all the userassist keys.

The program honors the ignore words tab even if you change back to the simple interface.
