A1) As a practical matter, what it considers to be history data is what it shows under the MRU and History Data category.

A2) a. It allows the user to chose a risk level. b. The more aggressive options reveal potentials for improvement that can be investigated outside of the program as time allows (perhaps that's just me :) ).

A3) The "Undo" tool lets the user remove selected backup instances at any time.

A4) The program does have an extended interface which allows configuration of several progam options. Additionally, the "Never show" context menu option lets the user actually configure the results,

So far. But as more and more people download this and install it on their Grandmother's computer (for example), you are going to hear way more about it then when the damage has already been done.

Precisely and all the rest is irrelevant. The user has to look and cannot know beforehand all the items considered as History Data by the program (not in other similar programs either, I guess), certainly not when starting to use the new program. After some time I guess it becomes clearer.

That makes no sense: the same thing is true for all other items also, not only for the MRU and History ones. If you do this it gives the false impression that all other items are always safe to select and fix/remove. ...

Actually, it does make sense for the "MRU and History Data" category. For example, "never show" for "Sun Java" hides 1000's of files with a single entry in the exclude list.

For the "Temp Files" category it does, indeed, not make sense the way the program currently works. "Never show" there could potentially add many thousands of items to the exclude list. For the "Temp Files" category, some program changes and a different "advisory" message would be needed ...

Note: The actual subject of this topic is history data. We can address temp files in detail later when some user reports about getting burnt with those features.

I thought the thread was about history files (IM message file) being classified as TEMP files. Or am I getting it wrong again?

Did you ever use jv16 PowerTools?

If so, you certainly used also the History Cleaner.

If so, you should know that cleaning the History implies not only Registry entries, but also files...

So yes, Yahoo! was most likely one of those items, but i didn't care to look further into it, assuming everything was registry stuff. Again: my fault, but the user interface didn't help at all either.

History Cleaner in PowerTools has a "Show Data" feature.

You double click a detail line and a window appears which lets you see all the registry and file data that will be cleared by that line.

Too bad the feature has not been carried forward to PTLite . . .

Additionally (or alternatively), messages like this could appear every time (like in File Cleaner) when the scan completes:

Note: the scan is now complete.

Warning: Always briefly review the "MRU and History Data" results. Some software items may reference files you wish to keep. Deselect such items.

A similar warning about the Temp Files category might be required later if there are a significant number of user surprises regarding required files vendors have thoughtlessly placed in the system's temporary directories.

This is the current File Cleaner warning:

I will admit that would be better than no warnings at all. But I still think newbies are going to not have any idea what is going on as far as how TEMP and history files are related.

What about changing the name of this thread in "PTLite for Dummies"? And a book with the same title should be written asap :|

This whole thread is indeed nothing but abs... and should be finished asap.

I support the suggestion(s) of Tullik (once again) in this post to add some warning messages, period. 8)

If one starts removing messenger logs from the History section, then everyone else might ask the same for other so considered (by them) non-history items and so the developer might simply remove the whole MRU & History section from his program. I guess that's not what he wanted.

I do repeat: the user himself (newbie or other) should be careful, attentive, cautious and patient and take the right decisions himself. If he doesn't and gets in trouble, then he should not blame it on the program :

Let's focus now again on other (more) interesting work (e.g. testing the real PowerTools again, because I noticed there's still a lot to be done there).
