PowerTools Lite Beta2 released

Here is the second beta version of PowerTools Lite:

Summary: PowerTools Lite is a very easy to use program for fixing registry errors and cleaning your computer, and it will be released as Freeware.

Do not install this beta version over any existing version but to a new directory. Also, do not uninstall any previous versions of jv16 PowerTools before the installation of this version - this version is a beta version. Beta version means the new product version is not yet finished and is only released for testing purposes in order to find the last remaining problems.

Do not start to translate this version to your language yet, there will be more changes to the language interface. The translations include the debug translation X_English which can be used to test and report if parts of the GUI cannot be translated.

Release notes:

* All the bugs reported on Beta1 should be fixed.

* The program can now be fully used, unlike the first beta this version is no longer read-only. However, the Fix button in this beta version only deletes the found data, it does not attempt to fix anything. Please use caution when using the program!

Known issues:

* Handbook icon of the Main Window produces an error message (because there is nor will be a handbook)

* Automatic removal and fixing features of the Start scan > Advanced options are not implemented yet

As always, all beta testers who give us valuable feedback such as good quality bug reports or other feedback will be given a free personal license for jv16 PowerTools 2009 when then final product version is released. To be clear, simply downloading the beta version and saying "it works fine" or "it doesn't work" doesn't entitle for a free license.

The final version should be ready in the next 20 days.

I started using the Beta Release 2 and tested it scanning my system reg after I reciently removed a number of softeware packages.

System Info: WIndows XP SP2. Dual Core Intel Processor. 2 x 1 Terabyte drives.

A few notes for you.

1. After the scan completed. A few times it seems to stop and nearly freeze up and the rotating (busy signal) stops moving.

2. After it completed, it shows the results all collasped where you have to open them up using the + sign. I believe these should open and show more detail on what each section is.

3. I had one reg key it said had the wrong permissons on it. But it did not give any details of why it believe this was wrong and what it plans to "Fix" it to be.

To me it should say something like we have found the reg key xxxx has the wrong permissions which can affect users with read only access to this key or something more detailed.

While your software seems to be very good. Reg is not anything to take chances with either.

May I also suggest you prompt the user to back up the reg before doing anything with it. IE Prompt that "We highly recommend that you allow the program to create a backup of your reg at this time.

It will be saved to xxxx(Details) and you can restore it back using the following method if you experience any issues.

Actually, you can already do this from the Start Scan's Advanced Options tab. By default the program doesn't automatically collapse all the groups because a long list of results might seem confusing to some users.

Bugs:

* In most runs, the scroll bar did not scroll. It did scroll in one run, out of the ~10 runs done.

* Temp Files category shows nothing (count is zero). Every time.

* After the list appears, the program runs on at ~50 to 55% cpu. Every time.

* After the list is closed, the program runs on at ~50 to 55% cpu. Every time.

* Sun Java still shows in the list even with the ignore words noted above.

* Sun Java caption says the ~4300 found items are registry entries (they are files).

* Right click on the Registry Junk subcategory (for example) shows only the "Never show" option, but thereafter a right click fails to show anything on any category, subcategory, or detail line (and the first presented "Never show" option cannot be selected).

* Right click on a detail line sometimes shows several options. Selecting the "Never show" option then brings up an empty "Ignore list editor" window. However, most of the time, you can't do anything useful after doing just the right click.

Except for the red one, none of the above beta1 issues have happened with beta2.

When you select the "Control hidden items" option, the "editor" window briefly shows in front, then drops out of sight behind the results window.

The program found only 2 tmp files in my Temporary Files directory instead of 20!

Most probably the program doesn't search either in the Subdirs of the Temp Files Main directory.

Seems the program doesn't do its job properly for the temp files indeed (like Tullik reported) :

MRU and History data

After a registry scan with jvPT Light V563, i fixed (=deleted) the "MRU and History entries" and made a backup file.

Making the backup file generated NO error messages, but Restoring the backup file generated the following error messages:

: Failed to access "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\tvDebug.log"! Windows core returned the following error:

"Access denied, file in use by other process."

: Failed to access "C:\WINDOWS\Sti_Trace.log"! Windows core returned the following error: "Access denied, file in use by other process."

: Failed to access "C:\WINDOWS\wiadebug.log"! Windows core returned the following error: "Access denied, file in use by other process."

: Failed to access "C:\WINDOWS\wiaservc.log"! Windows core returned the following error: "Access denied, file in use by other process."

: Failed to access "C:\WINDOWS\Debug\PASSWD.LOG"! Windows core returned the following error:

On the first registry/file scan one(1) TEMP file was detected,

I fixed (=deleted) this entry and made a backup. After that I restored the backup file. Both the making and restoring of the backup file produced

NO errors. But in the second and following registry/file scan the expected temp file did not return (temp file = 0).

\Windows Explore showed the temp file was still there!

This is because the temp file detection is based on the Creation Date and Last Modified Date fields of the files. After a file is restored, it's Creation Date will be new and thus it will not be listed by the program until after a few days has passed.

By the way, I tested the Beta2 prior its release also with a 64 bit OS and it worked perfectly, I did not detect a single problem. How about you?

When clciking "Fix" in the Results Window, I got these 2 error messages or warnings during the fixing procedure. All the other items were "fixed", i.e. removed.

Good to know... But isn't it possible then to extend the description(s) for the Registry (Cleaner) in a way it also covers the Temp files (cleaning)?

You are correct, I'll need to improve the GUI to give more information about this matter to the user.

Tested PT Lite on Vista SP2 RTM x64.

PT Lite finds the same registry entries and history items as jv16 PT 2009 with the slider settings of 1,2,and 3. On aggressive (slider setting 4(bottom)), PT Lite finds no addition keys to fix. jv16 PT 2009 finds 525 additional items...all of which I think are in error and I put into Ignore. So in my opinion, PT Lite is more accurate in aggressive mode than Build 555 of PT 2009. Attached are the Aggressive items found by PT 2009 B555

In both PT Lite and jv16 PT 2009 B555 registry cleaner, right click option "Export as .reg file" does not work. The "save to" navigation window does not open...nothing happens at all when selecting this option on Vista x64

Very nice freebie item. Should bring a lot of attention to the MaceCraft website and hopefully to jv16 PT 2009.
