I downloaded the beta version, installed software and the program is telling me my license key has expired. How do I extend the trial period on the Beta Version?

Registry Cleaner backup -- possibility of issue(s) with "incorrect permissions" error?

On my Vista Desk system, I had four keys with this error. I checked their permissions, but saw nothing obviously incorrect. Anyway, I clicked Fix. The program said they couldn't be fixed so it deleted them.

I restored the backup and the keys no longer show as errors. Since I didn't back up the entire registry, I don't know how to reproduce the original (or a similar) situation.

I don't know if this failure to restore the errors is a bug in PowerTools backup, or a RegEdit limitation regarding permissions updating.

Registry Cleaner -- structured format suggestion

The following additional choice in the Advanced options tab would probably be attractive to many users:

  • * Structured list: change error category detail default to "unhidden"

    or

    * Structured list: change error category detail default to "expanded"

    or simply

    * Expand structured list error category detail

Of course all this assumes the default would become hidden. If the current default ("not hidden") remains, just change the verb.

I am using Beta3, but this is happening to me with all last versions and all the pcs where I've tested this software (XP SP2, SP3, and VISTAx64).

When I right click an entry in the RCleaner results window, I get a context menu:

-Fix

-Custom Fix...

-Delete

-Remove from list

-Regedit

-Copy to clipboard

-Never show again

-Export as .reg file...

-Save as program backup file...

...but none of these options leads me to the registry entry at the windows registry editor. The option "Regedit" only makes the regedit.exe open, but doesn't lead me to the registry entry.

The same happens with "Registry Finder" and other features when I click "Open in regedit" in the context menu.

But if change of registry editor (Registry Workshop), it works all right. If I change back to windows regedit.exe, it fails again.

I've tested this on various pcs, some of them with a just installed windows.

Using beta3, this does not fail on my Vista Desktop PC. In other words, it goes right to the desired key -- in Registry Cleaner (raw list), Registry Cleaner (structured list), and Registry Finder.

I've also used it on four other PC's (XP, two XP Pro, Vista HP SP1), where it also works as it should.

This problem is now fixed, thank you for reporting! This bug boiled down to a bug that caused PowerTools to not to detect Windows Vista every time, so the bug might have caused something else as well.

This has now been changed, with beta4 and later you can adjust the height of the message boxes. This is actually quite a good idea, so thank you for reminding me!

Registry Cleaner backup -- possibility of issue(s) with "incorrect permissions" error?

On my XP Pro system, I had one key with this error. I checked its permissions, but recognized nothing obviously incorrect. Anyway, after backing up the registry with Lars Hederer's program, I clicked Fix. The program said it couldn't be fixed so it deleted it.

I restored the PT backup and the key no longer show as an error. The screenshots below show the before and after situation. It seems, for example, in the "before" picture, the "Administrators" userid not having any permissions and perhaps the "Network Service" userid may be what caused PT2009 to call the key an error. The changes in the "after" picture were likely made by Windows during the backup tool's use of RegEdit to do the restore.

Question: shouldn’t PT2009 have made at least some of those changes during the Fix operation?

Bug (in Note words): "You can undo all the changes from the backups." -- but you can't …

Could the developer explain this more in detail?

What are registry errors cause by "incorrect" permissions?

This means that the Registry Cleaner will now analyze the owner of the registry data, if there are registry keys without any owner data or it has invalid owner these are listed as errors. Using the Fix button, these errors are fixed by giving ownership to the administrator user.

When I put my mouse on the icons it gives me info on that icon. It does not stay there long enough for me to read it.

As far as I know, the time the text stays visible is determined by Windows, not individual applications.

Issues #3 and #4 have not yet happened again.

Issue #1 still happens now and then. It is hard to catch it in a sceenshot since just about any mouse action makes it go away.

Software Manager -- a serious bug (Vista pre-SP1)

The registry contained the Snapfish item below. Attempting removal with the Software Manager revealed a serious bug (or bugs?):

  • 1. The Uninstall button caused the removal of more than a thousand unrelated items from HKCR and HKLM. Fortunately the PT backup immediately reversed unfortunate symptoms that occurred right after the removals. The attachment contains the Entries.reg from the PT backup.

    2. The Delete button put up a progress indicator that never ended. The PT process used about 50% cpu for about a minute, then was idle. There was a backup dialog. However, no backup was created, but apparently nothing was removed either. The Software Manager window could be closed, and other open PT windows were still responsive.

    3. Custom uninstall-->Find registry keys listed over a thousand items. Probably they are the items removed by 1 above.

Removing the Snapfish key manually with RegEdit caused no problems.
