I tend to sympathise with JV; too much importance is being attached to minor bugs. In my view, the only ones that matter are those that prevent a tool from performing its designated function, such as the recent one which kept Registry Cleaner results hidden (which was fixed very quickly). I'm not saying I like the bugs; simply that it's clear we will have to learn to live with some of them.

Sorry, but I think you can't compare a program like PT2008 to a megaprogram like MS Vista.

What's more the two new bugs in History Cleaner (not working) and Quick System Analysis (creating an empty FileCache.dat) are "ugly" BUGS and were perfectly avoidable.

I used Windows as an example because even as it is closed source product we have a pretty good idea of the amount of source code lines it contains and this makes it possible to compare them. PowerTools is a medium size product with some 200.000 LOC, Windows has some 40.000.000 LOC.

I agree, these bugs should have been catched during our internal quality control and this does lead to some changes.

An exaggeration. All the new (and newly noticed) issues were reported in the forum about 40 hours after the release. And every single build wouldn't have to be pre-released -- just those which you think might yield some significant benefit.

Its true none of the bugs in bug fixes damaged anyone's system. Here are some actual impacts:

1. History Cleaner - Clear function completely disabled -- clearing even one line causes a cpu loop.

2. Tools with list windows -- exceptions cause a slow error message loop

3. Quick system analysis -- disables the functionality of FileCache.dat

4. Debug mode with Registry Cleaner -- a 25 MB log is probably too large to get to the developer conveniently

Changes in testing methods and procedures might help. For example, as a minimum for 1-4 above:

1. History Cleaner - do a test of the clearing function

2. Tools with list windows -- include in the test environment some files and registry items that trigger exceptions

3. Quick system analysis -- look at FileCache.dat

4. Debug mode with Registry Cleaner -- look at the properties of the log

I think that's NOT true. A good developer making a good program must be able to avoid bugs like those in the last release (History Cleaner, Quick System Analysis).

Quick System Analysis creating empty FileCache.dat is serious, because it prevents Registry Cleaner doing its job properly. History Cleaner not working is serious too, because it's one of the program tools NOT working at all.

As far as I'm concerned, "serious" means also BUGS which prevent a program and its parts working properly like it should and not only BUGS which harm the users computer.

So I do agree completely with Tullik's post above mine.

As for me.....at the moment I don't trust Power Tools to do it's job properly....so....guess I'll just wait on the update.

On the other hand, Power Tools, (now this is just my opinion) used to be, from what I could tell, pretty stable and glitch free.

Now please realize that I'm not programming literate, but lately, seems that with every new update, there are more and more glitches. Some are glaring issues that I can readily see. :

Others are apparently deeper into the program where, as they say on Star Trek, "No one has gone before". That especially applies to me.

I am of the same opinion as redseujac said above, "A good developer making a good program must be able to avoid bugs like those in the last release...."

Is it time for me to give up Power Tools in favor of something else? :?

I don't think there is any reason to overreact, the found problems are not serious. Sure, the bug in History Cleaner prevents users from using it, but that's not serious in a way it doesn't harm anyone's computer or crash it.

And in any case, an updated version will be released hopefully tomorrow.
