Ideas for PT 2009

The development of jv16 PowerTools 2009 is already started and some new features are already almost done.

So, what new features would you like to see in the next major version of PowerTools? Please post your feature requests to this thread. If you wish to suggest an already made suggestion, feel free to post a link to it.

A prior request worth consideration for PT2009:

Can File Finder say "all?"

Prior requests already implemented (in some form) prior to PT2009:

"Remove from list" option in some reg tools

Show elapsed time

Define tool sets

Make tools tasks

Keys with "No Permissions"

This suggestion by member CAOgdin has considerable merit. It could also apply to file and directory permissions.

If doable, permission analysis and change capability might be implemented as additional features in existing registry and file tools. However, for simplicity, it might be better to have new, specialized tools.

Undo the Never Shown Again items -- suggested by member Tarun.

There are currently six Super ignore lists. A separate, simple tool with a check box for each list and "Delete" and "Edit" buttons would be sufficient. "Edit" would just call notepad.

These features could be implemented in a tab in a new Maintenace tool.

Backup tool -- move backups feature

Implement the moving of selected backups to a user specifiable directory outside of PowerTools.

Backup tool -- implement selection checkboxes in the main tool list (all tabs).

Backup tool -- implement a line context menu option to let the user rename the subdirectory containing the backup.

Preference saving

Implement a Settings tool-->Preference saving option that causes the user supplied preference description to be used as the preference filename.dat. Disallowed filename characters would of course be automatically suppressed or substituted. The feature would facilitate the recognition and removal of obsolete preferences using windows explorer.

Manually implemented example actually in use:

If a tab in a new Maintenace tool listed tool preference files, recognition and removal of obsolete preferences could be handled within PowerTools with backup and avoid the use of windows explorer for this purpose.

Be nice to have a feature to remove stubborn registry keys by resetting the key's permissions and then deleting it.

If the requests in the referenced topic are not implemented in PT2008, they could be PT2009 candidates.

With "SHI" codename47 means the System Health Indicator in the Scan Report of the Registry Cleaner...

File Finder tool - Columns tab

The File Finder tool is useful in a wide variety of analyses in the file system. The columns that need to show for a specific analysis are very clumsy to specify during the scan with the current Columns menu on the results window.

A prescan tab is needed so the columns may more efficiently be specified (and remembered in Preferences).

The current Columns menu on the results window needs to be retained for:

1. Ad hoc specifications in a File Finder scan

2. The File Tool (which has no Preferences capability)

I don't believe any version of PowerTools has ever supported a search on file or folder attributes.

I'll add a feature request for PT2009.

Please consider File Finder and Directory Finder features that cause only objects with the Hidden attribute to be listed.
