Both on delete or fix. Any ideas?

Thanks for your reply Redseujac. I am using 1.8.0.455. I installed it a week or so ago. I have not experienced anything like this since I first started to use power tools when it was shareware.

I noticed in your zip file that .dib items were among those for which you got the Windows core returned the following error: "Invalid key" message.

I have HKCR .dib items in my Vista registry, but v.1.8.0.455 Registry Cleaner doesn't call them errors.

Do the .dib keys/names/data in your registry match mine below?

regedit export of HKCR dib file extension.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

"Content Type"="image/bmp"

@="Paint.Picture"

"PerceivedType"="image"

@=""

"Paint.Picture"=""

@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

I made my HKCR .dib items look like yours, then ran aggressive scans (both "Engine settings" and "Advanced ..." tabs). None of the scans picked out .dib stuff as errors.

I can't reproduce it. Sorry. :?

So I'll do the same thing on my XP Pro laptop to see if it's different there ...

Not really -- I exported the items first for backup. I had to delete the key, then reload it to make it exactly like yours -- the structure was essentially "empty" (null or blank values).

Flash -- for the very same key/subkeys/names/data, PT2008 Registry Cleaner on XP says they are "Useless file extensions" -- but on Vista, they do not show up on the results list at all.

In a few minutes. I'll click the Delete button and post what happens.

Well, on XP, Registry Cleaner deleted the .dib items. There were no error messages. RegEdit showed the keys were really gone.

PT ought to handle a simple empty key/subkeys/names/data structure like this with the same result on all supported windows operating systems. But it did not.

So is it a bug and those "Invalid key" messages are wrong? Another possibility is you may have application processes in the background which have "locked" those essentially empty registry items even if they aren't used by what you do with the applications. If that is the case, the keys are not invalid, just protected.

BTW, the HKCR .dib structure is twinned (duplicated and synchronized) in HKLM. Namely in:

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dib

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.dib

Tullik, like you said, those problems are not present in Vista.

Registry Cleaner lists almost nothing anymore in my Vista system :?

I'm wondering if the cleaner doesn't list too little now :

..... It appears the solution for the invalid keys concern discussed here is to set jv16 Registry Cleaner to ignore them during future scans so they will not show up in the results.

Trouble is Thiggy, I don't like leaving something called "CustomWordBreaker" on my machine and ignoring it, when it I don't know where it came from and I don't know what's running it.

It wasn't there the first few times I ran JV. I'm not a programmer so I can't get into Vista home premium and do something about it.

I think it's safe to put CustomWordBreaker in your ignore list.
