Startup Manager, recurring error for item in list (v 1.8.0.449 (#2))

Edit: title changed 16 August 2008 -- link to changed emphasis for ~v.1.8.0.467

Problem description (and refer to screenshots):

  • "Show only: All starting applications and libraries" is selected.

An item in the list is invalid (path points to a camera memory card slot or some such device).

Clicking or scrolling to the item's line causes a "Windows - No Disk" pop-up.

Clicking any of the three buttons in the pop-up just causes the pop-up to recur -- for all practical purposes, the tool is hung up.

The "Loaded from" key shown in the caption area, according to RegEdit, contains only an entry name (a GUID string) and no data.

Sometimes, if done first, it is possible to click the item's check box without the pop-up occurring.

However, since is not clear what would be removed, I have not clicked the Remove button.

For simplicity, I took some liberty with the red line. "Sometimes, if done first" more accurately means "Never (or maybe once)" ...

This is how to break out of the pop-up loop:

  • * with your right hand, click on one of the pop-up buttons (the pop-up comes back again very quickly).

    * immediately, with your left hand, press the Down key.

    * repeat the above two actions frantically until the pop-up stops recurring.

    * when that happens, the bad line still has a check mark in its box, but a single line several lines down is highlighted.

    * it is not certain at all what would happen if you then clicked the Disable or Remove button ...

Startup Manager, recurring error for item in list

This issue still exists in v.1.8.0.455. Refer to topmost post in the topic for details. This post provides additional information.

The key and details shown in the Startup Manager caption area do not match the registry content. However, the main issue is the path in the data is invalid and therefore, the item should be skipped.

The actual key with the bad path in the data shows in the last RegEdit screenshot below. The two keys are linked by a GUID …

Re: the invalid path O:\PROGRA~1\DVDIDL~2\DVDShell.dll referenced above ...

CCleaner skips (doesn't show) this path as an issue. The path points to a camera memory card slot or some such device.

If I use RegEdit to change O:\... to C:\..., then CCleaner shows it as an issue.

Therefore, PT also should be able to detect the situation and skip the item, or otherwise avoid the "No Disk" loop ...

This problem should now be fixed, thank you for reporting! The next version including this fix will be released in this week.

Fix did not work. In v.1.8.0.457, I still get the "No Disk" loop when I click the line with the O:\... item.

The "No disk" loop issue is fixed in v.1.8.0.459. Thank you.

Here's a new issue involving the same item (item shown in the screenshots above).

Startup Manager, redirected item cannot be disabled or removed

Software Manager shows DVDShell.dll as loaded from this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ShellExecuteHooks

That key redirects to this CLSID key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{93994DE8-8239-4655-B1D1-5F4E91300429}

And O:\PROGRA~1\DVDIDL~2\DVDShell.dll is actually data in the InprocServer32 subkey (see screenshot here) .

Here are the issues for PowerTools:

  • The Disable button causes a progress indicator to appear. Its duration is short (just a flash). The item still shows "Yes" in the "Enabled" column. Also, the internal use folder for SUM contained no changes. In other words, nothing was done.

    The Remove button causes:

  • 1. a backup dialog

    2. the item to drop from the list

    3. this message: ": All done! 0 B of data was removed (0 files, 0 directories, 0 registry entries and 0 registry keys)."

    4. no backup

*** The item is still in the list the next time you run Startup Manager. That is, nothing really happened.

I tested one "normal" item (that is, there was no key redirection). Disable, Enable, and Remove seemed to work for it.

Could you export all the registry data relating to this problem to a .reg file and send it over? This way I could better debug the problem. Thanks.

Will do (here) soon ...
