That's a handy feature. With that feature you can also install the same version of jv16 PowerTools twice (I now have one with my license file, backups and settings, etc. and another one only for testing, which I could remove anytime).

Also nice to see that the translations are completely up-to-date.

Too bad even jv16 PowerTools 2008 1.8.0.448 doesn't work on Windows 98 and ME.

With the present installer used "officially" by Macecraft, it is also possible to use mutltiple versions of Macecraft products at the same time. For example:

All one has to do before the install is preallocate the target folder and (optionally) prime it with an appropriate MainSettings.dat.

Also, never run the uninstall -- just delete the folders not wanted.

The shortcut icons created by the installer downloaded from codecpack.nl invoke a program named jv16 PowerTools.exe. I have observed that that program very quickly transfers control to the usual Macecraft executable jv16PT.exe. I don't know what else jv16 PowerTools.exe does.

Question: Why does the installer from codecpack.nl install the jv16 PowerTools.exe program and point the shortcut icons at it? The installer from the Macecraft.com site doesn't do this.

This is true. But it's not possible to define the application name in Delphi in runtime (as far as I know), so a generic name is used. The same code base is nowdays used for all our products, that's why the name is "jv16 PowerTools / RegSupreme Pro / RegSupreme".

When running Registry Cleaner using this build I get Access Violation errors.

Access Violation: TFR.OpenKey CancCreate = True! CallID: 126

After clicking OK in the Dialog Box I get the same error message popping up again then a third time. After this the program runs as normal.

The HB executable is approx. twice the size of the other one.

Sorry, but I see no reference as to what the HB signifies.

I had thought of that possibility but hadn't seen the 2 choices before.

2007 version always came with handbook if you chose to install it.

I assume this is the first 2008 version with the handbook.

I am aware of those posts and the differences in the screenshots.

I am curious about a couple of things:

1. Is the program named jv16 PowerTools.exe written by or authorized by Macecraft?

2. That program seems to have some consequences. Some of these are probably unintended. Others seem to be the result of enforcing "new installer" rules. Namely:

a. If a copy of PT2007 or PT2008 is up, jv16 PowerTools.exe does not launch a new jv16PT.exe. It does launch a new copy if PT2005 or PT2006 are already up.

b. If the install key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\jv16 PowerTools 2008_is1) is not present in the registry, jv16 PowerTools.exe does not launch jv16PT.exe. When I ran Registry Cleaner, it listed that key as an "Obsolete Add / Remove menu entry." If the key is deleted, jv16 PowerTools.exe will no longer launch jv16PT.exe -- a Catch 22?

c. If the install key for PT2008 is missing but the install key for PT2007 is not, the shortcut named "jv16 PowerTools 2008" launches PT2007 (of course only if PT2007 is also installed).

Notes:

1. I am aware of the behavior changes in jv16 PowerTools.exe caused by the two execution parameters in the shortcut named "jv16 PowerTools 2008."

2. It is not just power users that install multiple versions. Many cautious users install new releases to a separate folder so they have immediate back out if needed.

3. Heretofore, Macecraft products have not needed any product created registry items to operate. Even the items created by the "official" installer are not required for product operation.

4. Macecraft's current PowerTools license policy allows the use of multiple products with the same license.

I added the above item to my notes during your reply. This is (or perhaps, almost is) a Macecraft policy. I wonder if jv16 wants to change the current practice?

Some users have installed PowerTools to a portable device such as a USB stick for casual diagnostic use on other machines. jv16 has sanctioned this via supportive posts. How will the "new installer" handle this case?

Of course, the obvious answer is it won't -- but one only needs to execute jv16PT.exe instead of jv16 PowerTools.exe …

The contents and the included files are not modified, I did a binary compare and they are 100% identical. The additional exe is just an advanced shortcut, nothing more.

Thereby: you asked for a conditional uninstaller (which is a serious issue with the old installer that can cause data loss) and now you've got it you don't want it anymore?
