How do I restore my event viewer, task manager and disk defragmenter if I do NOT have restore points or backups of my registry?

Test for loss of Vista's Event viewer (plus)

I ran the test version 1.8.0.446 with launches of the System Event viewer after reboots, as follows:

2. Right after PT launch -- OK

3. After the quick system analysis -- OK

4. After clicking the Startup Manager icon (and appearance of results window) -- OK

It may be fixed.

I'll do one more test --- rotating through the radio buttons several times, then rebooting …

I second redseujac's conclusion. After the radio button rotation test and reboot, the service viewers in question started normally.

I don't know if it has something to do with the fix, but from now on, when executing Windows Task Manager, and after closing it, the Taskeng.exe (Task Manager engine) remains in the Notification Area and I have to manually kill it in Task Manager...

I would like to know this too. Task manager and disk defrag are working for but event viewer is not. If I can fix windows event log then event viewer will work. It is giving me error 2. Can not find a file. Task Scheduler and Event Viewer need Windows Event log running to work. One other thing if Task Scheduler is not running you will not be able to create a restore point.

JV16, your software is supposed to FIX our registry, not DESTROY it!

Yeah, riiiiight.

I used it under XP Pro for a year or two and loved it, but it's been flaky under Vista from day one. I installed Vista in April of 2007, went to the Macecraft web page and found the Q&A , "Does jv16 work with Vista?", A. "All our software works with Vista". So I installed it, ran it and it completely hosed my registry! Since then, through the updates to 2007, I've had it "fix" things I didn't want fixed, report that things were "fixed" when they weren't, etc.

Now this.

Yeah, I'm running Acronis backup software, and thankfully I had a backup without the problem that was "only" four days old. But I still had to do a lot of work, first trying to figure out what had happened, (several hours to no avail), then finding a backup without the problem, (another couple of hours), and then getting everything put back from my most recent backups to the four day old restore, including fixing Outlook, another several hours.

DAMMIT I'm angry!

Do you even BOTHER testing your software on Vista? Do you even HAVE a Vista platform to test on?

If you do, why are you asking others in this thread to, "Please try this or that fix"?

I"m sure jv16 feels bad about this, but that's no help to all the people who've had to deal with this, and it sure isn't any help to the people who've lost their systems without a backup.

This time, after more than a year to get it right, releasing this version of betaware is simply inexcusable.

I no longer trust jv16 to run on my computer. I will monitor this forum for a while to see how things are going, but it's gonna be a LONG time before I'll feel comfortable using it again, and I most CERTAINLY will NOT be recommending it to friends as I have in the past.

The bug seems to be fixed in the new version 1.8.0.466.

I tested it and it was OK.

Did you go to the download page and download that version?

Yes, I did download 1.8.0.466, but I haven't installed it, and to tell you the truth I'm afraid to. Been burned too many times now. This release wasn't ready for prime time, and I have a feeling this "fix" was done in a big rush and I just don't trust it. Don't know what else will have to be "fixed" later when it may be too late, when I don't have a backup old enough to be "pre-problem".

No, I meant what I said earlier, it will be while before I trust this software again, if ever.

Well first, when I first registered I had used a different, (old), email address and password. Couldn't find them this morning when I wanted to post so I just re-registered. Second, I had also used Macecraft support. Third, I don't always look for help or answers for every problem with every piece of software I own. Sometimes it's just better to wait for a bit and make sure it's the software and not the user causing the problem, and quite often when I determine that it is the software, someone has figured out the solution.

None of which has any bearing on the release of this version or this particular problem. If I had never had a problem before it would have no bearing whatsoever on this bug getting out the door.

There simply is no excuse, no defense for selling a product that destroys people's systems BY SIMPLY BOOTING THE PRODUCT, and looking at a module.

ESPECIALLY a product that's supposed to be fixing problems and repairing systems!

Are those of us without Restore points or Registry Backups out of a fix for the damaged files? My paid version of Diskeeper 2008 will not run, as also the Live OneCare Firewall. The Event Viewer is down and other windows programs like the regular Disk Defragmenter. I cannot defrag my system at all now and a re-install is a tedious process of 7 hours or more. Downloaded 3rd party defrag programs will not come up either after i install them. Is this going to be addressed? Seems it wouldn't take long to list the damaged area's and put them in this forum page so we can undo them. Thanks, L

The problem is that we can't do a repair install with Vista like we could with the previous versions of Windows. This is what should be addressed as other system files could become corrupted over time. I know that is not the job of Macecraft but perhaps someone knows how or could point us in the right direction.

randylsmith, ..use this program below at the link to defrag with for now. It works where others will not. From MSDN. You can also defrag from the Command Prompt CMD. The instructions are below the link. This will keep you going at least without a total crash down. I'm going to limp along with my Vista for now. My Task Manager is working so i don't know on your's. You can though use the Software Explorer in Windows Defender to do the same things as the Task Manager. And the others should come up in Services.msc. Good luck. - L

With the Command Prompt, Right click the program icon and "Run as Administrator".

Get ALL the statistics with (type in)

defrag c: -a -v

The -a is for analyze. the -v is for verbose.

(Type in) defrag C: -a

will show you the % of file fragmentation.

defrag C: -w

will perform a FULL defrag

Yes, I had the same problem. I thought that after downloading a few drivers that one of these caused the problem.

So I used some restorepoints and the Taskplanner did function again. But I didn´t realize that it could be caused by jvTools. And, regretly, after using jvTools some times after that I don´t have restorepoints anymore.

Maybe we can try to fix it though without the use of restorepoints. The problem is obviously in the eventviewer.

I get the message that "it cannot read the data". So my conclusion is that the file where these events are stored is corrupt. I know there is a eventvwr.msc and some other msc files. What I would like to try Is if someone (where the taskplanner etc. is working correctly) could give me copies of the eventvwr.msc and eventvwr.exe files I could copy it in the system32 directory and reboot the computer again and see what´s happening.

And what I would like to know is if the icons of these files have an exclamationmark in it (again if the taskplanner is working correctly).

Based on redseujac's experience with ERUNT (earlier in this topic), the problem is more likely to be one or more missing or incorrect registry items for the Event services.
