The RC1 is now out:

http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/betas/jv16pt2008_setup_RC1.exe

(If the link doesn't work it means the testing for this version has already ended)

Do not install this beta version over any existing version but to a new directory. Also, do not uninstall any previous versions of jv16 PowerTools before the installation of this version - this version is a beta version. Beta version means the new product version is not yet finished and is only released for testing purposes in order to find the last remaining problems.

Feel free to translate this version to your language, if everything goes as planned there won't be any more changes to the language interface.

This version should fix all the main problems of the Beta2.

As always, all beta testers who give us valuable feedback such as good quality bug reports will be given a free personal license for the product when then final product version is released. To be clear, simply downloading the beta version and saying "it works fine" or "it doesn't work" doesn't entitle for a free license.

Hello,

Problem: Startup Manager crashes to "Could not convert variant of type (String) into type (Double)" error.

Reported by: jepe

Status: Not confirmed. However, I did some changes and this problem is hopefully now fixed.

This problem has gone for me - tested with every "Show" option of Start-up Manager.

Best regards

Jean-Paul

Hello again,

At the first start I had the following Debug message: Code: nox7.

The following starts this does not happen anymore.

Could it be in relation that I did a search for the license file (PT 2007)- which - I know - is not valid for PT 2008.

Best regards

Jean-Paul

The following situations still exist in RC1:

Registry Finder bug

Using the following settings in v 1.7.0.416 finds the registry hive entries:

  • Search words: CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist

Options: search only HKLM and only analyze key names

    Ignore words: {KEY} and N/A

With the same settings, PT2008 beta1 no longer finds the registry hive entries.

Note: The bug was apparently introduced in PT2007 v 1.7.0.422. It doesn't find the entries either.

Registry Cleaner - Custom fix bug

Some "file does not exist" error types are handled incorrectly by the "Fix manually …" feature.

The screenshot shows the situation.

When you click OK, the bug does the following:

  • 1. uses the data in the "Fix manually …" input box as an entry name

    2. causes a new erroneous entry to be put in the registry

    3. does not correct the original error which stays in the registry

Notes:

  • PT2007 contains the same bug

PT2006 handles this type change correctly (it knows the data is data, not an entry name)

Registry Finder -- search is too slow

Settings used:

  • Search words: i:\

Options: scan all the root keys and analyze key names, value names, and value data

With PT2007 (v 1.7.0.422), the search took just over two minutes.

With PT2008 beta1 (v 1.8.0.433), the search took considerably longer (about six times as long).

With PT2008 RC1 (v 1.8.0.441), the search still took about six times as long.

In this clickable graph, the PT2007 run is on the left; part of the PT2008 run is on the right:

Message box from the beta1 search:

  • : HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG analyzed.

    : HKEY_USERS analyzed.

    : HKEY_CURRENT_USER analyzed.

    : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE analyzed.

    : HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT analyzed.

jv16 wrote ... Problem: Hair trigger windows (http://www.macecraft.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=11465#11465)

Reported by: tullik

Status: Confirmed. However, this bug can only be fixed by totally removing the custom skin engine of the Window itself. Based on user feedback, we have decided to do this and thus bring back the standard window caption bars to PowerTools but I cannot at this stage say when this will be done. Maybe for PT 2008 before the final version, maybe after the final release. ...

Definitely a major undertaking! When you get to it, perhaps you can also devise a way for a window's message box to minimize/restore along with the window.

Incidentally, besides the major distractions (unsolicited window maximization, unsolicited launch of tasks), the skin has some minor ones. For example, very often the first left click on a check box is lost and one has to click it again. After the first click, subsequent clicks in the window behave normally.

File Recovery tool observations

3. When I first scanned C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\, only file In.lnk showed on the list -- that file already exists on the Desktop.

In.lnk lists as a 0% condition file. After restoring it, it still appears on the list when I rescan. I don't know if this is a bug or some artifact in my file system.

4. I created several rtf files on the Desktop, placed copies in a desktop subfolder, then permanently deleted the files. When I ran the tool several times, what it listed was inconsistent.

Ignore this. I guess the inconsistency is probably due to the freed space being overwritten entirely by something else ...

Main window context menu

There is no longer a context menu when you right click a neutral area in the body of the main window.

This is true for all three of the main window tool show options.

Residual list window smudge

Sometimes, the rolling counters in the upper right corner are not completely cleared when a scan completes. See below.

Dragging, resizing, or restoring the window clears the smudge.

Registry Cleaner - minor string truncation

The path is truncated in a specific "Error description" as shown in the screenshot thumbnail.

Apparently there's a bug in extracting the string when the ending part of the folder name contains dots …

List filters -- too limited

The filter is case sensitive -- will this be changed?

Only the leftmost list column is filtered -- will the filter be extended to look at other columns?

Some examples of "too limited":

  • Software Manager -- one cannot filter on "Software" name

Software Manager -- with the Age System enabled, the filter choices are only "Old" or "New"

File utilities -- one cannot filter on "File" name, only on "Directory" path

Registry Cleaner -- one can only filter on "Error severity"

List filter input box -- delete key misinterpreted

When using the delete key to edit text in the filter box, the program acts like the "Clear" button has been clicked. This message occurs:

  • : The following information must be provided in order to start:

    * Selection of at least one item from the list.

Much better in beta 2:

  • 1. Filter now operates across all list columns.

    2. Filter is (for the most part) case insensitive.

Remaining problems:

  • 1. The first column filtering is still case sensitive.

    2. One still can't use the delete key to edit the filter box text.

Note: all tests were with a Vista BE OS.

Registry Finder finds less

The following settings in PT2007 v 1.7.0.422 finds the items shown in the first screenshot:

  • Search words: DosDevices

Options: search only HKLM and analyze key names, value names, and value data

    Ignore words: none

With the same settings, PT2008 RC1 finds fewer items as shown in the second screenshot.

Also, the title bar in the PT2008 results window is not correct.

I install the the rc build and now it is telling me I have 30 days left. It did not do this in beta 2.

Sometimes the following pop-up appears -- it explains why the "days left" message is there:

Main window loses it

Sometimes, with the tools shown in categories, the main window loses part of its background color where ones clicks on a category.

Also, the entire body of the window loses its background color when one minimizes then restores the window.

It seems to happen only when the Debug message: Code: nox7 and/or the license information pop-up occurs. But sometimes it does not happen when those messages occur. :?

Occasionally when this happens, the main window cannot be closed and one must kill jv16PT.exe.

always a pleasure testing your software jv :)

here is a bit familiar bug i found

Registry Cleaner:

  • Choose "Raw list"
  • Hit Start
  • Select some random entry form the results
  • Click Delete
  • Either create a backup or not...
  • After the item is deleted simply keep pressing the delete or the fix buttons
  • They will still work and report back ("The registry fixing procedure is now complete. It was possible to correct 0 items out of 1, 1 items had to...")

File Cleaner:

There is no way to determine how many disk space i will gain before deleting the files?

File Finder and most others tools

  • Search for something that will bring up a list of files
  • Click on the text in the message window
  • Now click on the name of one of the found files
  • Click on the text in the message window again
  • Now on a file's name again.... and some other names too

In my tests it opens the files for no reason (i just clicked once?) and in the registry cleaner it opens Regedit again for no reason. the only way to browse the list normally again is to maximize the window or to right click a file instead of left clicking....

Since it opens the files (and not "Exploring" its folder) maybe that option shold be added to the right click menu too

Custom Restore (in Backups):

I am missing an open original containing folder (as close as possible if some of it is deleted) option for files, and something similar for opening Regedit in the closest original destination....that's a right click option of course

EDIT#2

all searching tools

In the Directory tool for example if my "Search in" tab is empty and i try to start a search i get the error

": The following information must be provided in order to start:

* At least one source directory."

Although the line "At least one source directory" looks like a clickable link it is not.

why is that? i expected that clicking on it will bring the "Search in" tab to the front for me to fill it. It is probably relevant for other errors as well (and all other tools that search for something)

cheers :)

Start Menu and Desktop tool

1. Shouldn't there be an Explore option in a line's context menu in case one wishes to use windows facilities to make manual corrections? Currently, there is no line context menu at all.

2. The name of this tool is too long for the main window.

It tells me i'm using version 1.8.0.441 and the latest version is 1.8.0.435.This is using Vista Home Premium.

Sorry, we encountered an error while displaying this content. If you're a user, please try again later. If you're an administrator, take a look in your Flarum log files for more information.

Registry Manager, "new" tab still doesn't show contact and briefcase templates under Vista.

One can see the size of each file by selecting "Size" in the "Columns" menu.

Not enough IMO

There should be a way to calculate the total space saved before deleting anything

a small interface problem:

  • Open registry cleaner for example
  • In the small options window opened use the arrows in the tabs line to navigate to somewhere in the middle of the tabs line
  • Now resize the window in order to get rid of the need for arrows
  • The arrows will not disappear until you navigate your way back to the first tab with those arrows

Quick System Analaysis runs much faster now in RC1

However...

After running the 1st time, a Message Window ('extended info') pops up showing you the scores of System Health and Registry Health.

After running the second and further times the same tool (i.e. Quick System Analysis), a (the) Message Window showing you the score is missing. Only the gauges are showing the results.

Is this on purpose, or is it an "issue" (bug)?

Probably you mean Directory Finder - because in Directory Tool is no "Search in"-tab.

But in all Tools with a "Search in"-tab you will find a button called "Add" who opens the window you need .

Best regards

Jean-Paul

You are right Jean-Paul and what PROGRAME will do: clicking on 'At least one source directory' is naturally impossible because it's simply a warning in the Message Window that pops up :

There are many, many warnings and info's in Message Windows popping up all over the program. Well it is (and will) be impossible to click on those messages I suppose.

File title bars

There is no tool name in the File Cleaner results window title bar. It is there in beta2.

File Tool and File Finder have the same bug.

Directory Tool has "File Finder" in its title bar.

Directory Finder has an incomplete name in its title bar.

I noticed some components of the Registry Manager take much more time to finish now.

"File Types" for example needs one and a half minute to do its job and showing me the scan results :
