Help - managed to kill my laptop with jv16

Hi there. I work from home on my Lenovo x60s laptop and so feel extra foolish for spending a few minutes cleaning my registry (not aggresive) and then unticking 4 or 5 thinks in start up manager. These included acrobat reader, nokia pcsuite, real scheduler, ipass and 1-2 more. Then wanted to reboot but the system forze which i put down to Skype playing up so perforemd a hard reboot. Now it shows the blue XP (SP2 by the way) starting up screen and gets stuck there. If i do a ctrl-alt-del i see the task manager with less than half the usual number of processes (34 now). I can do some limited editing of files by browsing from task manager for a new process so have renamed SMC.exe the sygate firewall as i was getting a message that it was trying to access a wrong memory address. Being lenovo it does not let me boot from the windows CD but goes to rescue and recovery but as i have no back ups of the system this is of no use. Any ideas how i can get in and either restore the system using windows or access the backups of jv16?

Are you saying when you start the computer, it hangs in Windows startup but if you at this step press Ctrl + Alt + Del you can get to Task Manager?

Hi! Well it goes into the usual windows is tarting screen with the flag in the middle, light blue background and blue border top and bottom you know. Then nothing. After a while if i ctr-alt-del then it shows the task manager as described above. If i try for a safe mode startup then i end up with the same result but with safe mode stamps in the corners. As i say, with the task manager all i can do is try to run a new process and the limited browser that it provides would let me rename files but nothiong else..

If you can run a process with the Task Manager run RegEdit.exe and use its File > Import feature and import all the backup .reg files of jv16 PowerTools. The backup .reg's are in the Backup folder of jv16 PowerTools, in c:\program files\jv16 PowerTools 2007\backups by default.

I cannot run processes from the "add process" or "add task" command in task manager. It comes up with an error that no program is associated with that file and that i should associate it from folder options. I cannot access folder options.. I could copy the backup files off the hard drive but then what can id do with them?

Try to browse to the backup directory of jv16 PowerTools and using the Right Click menu try to restore the registry backup files (files called entries.reg).

If this doesn't work the only way is to restore the system using a System Restore or install Windows over the current installation. Installing Windows over without formating you shouldn't lose any of your files or other data.

If you do this, please send me the backup file(s) for further analysis so I could say what caused the problem.
