RC2 - directories

RC2 did not create all its primary subdirectories.

It created C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools 2007 RC2\Settings\Directories.dat containing:

  • Backups=C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools 2007 RC2\Backups\

    Cache=C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools 2007 RC2\Cache\

    Tasks=C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools 2007 RC2\Tasks\

    Snapshot=C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools 2007 RC2\Snapshots\

    Settings=C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools 2007 RC2\Settings\

Only the Settings directory exists in the RC2 folder ...

Edit: just noticed that RC1 had the same problem ...

Directory Finder (vista)

Those redundant paths in vista are no longer put on the results list, or even searched/counted apparently -- good change.

Beta5 went through 46000+ directories -- RC2 only did 13000+ :)

by the way how do you reset the never show again actions?

Question 1: I use "Search by size -->Directories that are smaller than 1 byte" ...

Question 2: Use notepad to examine and edit files like these in C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools\Settings

  • SuperDirIgnoreList.dat

    SuperFileIgnoreList.dat

    SuperHistoryCleanerIgnoreList.dat

    ... and so forth ...

thanks, it might be a good idea to add a reset hidden items button in the Maintenance tab of the settings dialog

some other settings reset buttons might be in order too, including a one button reset to manufacturer settings

i do use the normal scan mode, i just view it in the Raw results format. ...

Yes, "Quick select-->Normal" gets a health indicator in Beta5, so RC2 has this relatively minor bug ....

Yes, and you may not want to reset all the "SuperIgnores" -- so you need several buttons ... or a new tab in the Settings tool ...

1. I am somewhat intimidated by this software unlike before. Although it is a beta product, the results of the scan are not clearly shown. The box for custom fix is truncated and out of line. As a result I cannot properly read the file name and I hesitate to fix any errors.

2. As I mentioned before, a space usage gage in a pie-shaped form with percentage, would be useful.  Perhaps 6 main categories one of which must be restore points storage. This would enable a user to, if necessary, delete restore points except the last one, so as to free up space.

Registry Cleaner, normal, raw list, custom fix, vista

Apparently in vista, items such as the following seem to be redundant:

  • 1. Key = HKUS\S-1-5-21-2736614755-4186107725-1336004102-1010 \Soft\Classes\Local Settings\Soft\MSoft\Win\shell\MuiCache\

    Entry = C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\jv16pt_setup_2007_RC2.exe

    2. Key = HKUS\S-1-5-21-2736614755-4186107725-1336004102-1010_Classes \Local Settings\Soft\MSoft\Win\shell\MuiCache\

    Entry = C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\jv16pt_setup_2007_RC2.exe

In any case, if you select and delete one of the items with "Custom fix," both items are no longer in the registry,

but the one not selected remains on the list (a bug). Backup is OK (I suppose -- it just contains the one removed item ...).

The same thing happens if you just select one of the items on the list and use the Remove button ...

...

Try drag-resizing the custom fix window to make it larger ... the default size is too small for many windows that have not been used before ... but it remembers the last size, if it can (may override to show the message box if last was full screen ...)

Backup Tool

Jv, thanks for the change that lets the "Registry tab" remember the column sort active when you close the tool.

However, I still think a better default than "ID" (ascending) would be "Created" (descending). Reasons?

  • 1. File and Other tabs remember nothing -- they use the default

    2. When you click a different tab, then click back later, all is forgotten -- it reverts to the default

    3. "Created" (descending) puts the most recent backup first in a list -- that has more meaning to a person than a randomly generated directory name ("ID")

An alternative would be for each tab to have its own memory ...

Bug? I don't know ...

Suggest you experiment with "File-->Settings-->Windows management" settings to see if it makes a difference ... you may find a combination you like best, bug or not ...

That's done by windows, not PT -- have you tried a reboot?

yeah thought so too, but I can proof ist pt16 (:-))

Installed beta 5 and let it set icons in startmenu, deinstalled beta 5 and installed rc2 without icons - no problem anymore.

Reboot and all - no change

I still don't think PT manages the Start Menu notifications ... perhaps jv will tell us ...

Way, WAY less buggy than rc1. And it seems to be back on its meds - a lot less jumpy. Thanks, jv
