JV16 PT Reg cleaner detects but won't clean

Hi, I've just installed JV16 PT 2006 on an XP Pro machine. When I run Regcleaner it runs Ok, and finds several hundred errors, before finally comes up with the summary report. I select all errors, use fix, agree to a backup. The program then appears to be Fixing/cleaning, (bar graph running) but doesn't come up with the confirmation box which indicates how many problems were fixed or erased. If I rerun reg cleaner it finds exactly the same number of errors.

I had been running regsupreme and easy cleaner and thought these may have compromised install of PT2006, but uninstalling everything, rebooting and re installing a fresh download hasn't helped.

This may not give you cheer, but having had the problem for several days since installation and posted the enquiry, JV16 suddenly started started working.

The only thing I did different was instead of using reg cleaner in aggresive mode (ala Fred Langa), I tried it in normal mode. This worked as it should, but only finding 30 registry errors. At the end of the fix operation it returned the report box telling me how many fixed and how many deleted, and a second run returned 0 errors. I then ran regcleaner in aggressive mode and it returned roughly 30 less errors than previously, but went on to give me the fix/clean report. a second run in aggressive returned 0 errors - Hurrah ! Its been running faultlessly since. I can only assume normal mode cleared something that prevented aggressive mode doing its job as absolutely nothing else was done.

No I haven't tried aggressive mode, I think Vista is the main cause of the problem. I may try the 2007 Beta, see if there is an improvement!

Some unremovable items with Vista are described here. They only show when using the RegSupreme programs or older versions of PowerTools.

There were two items, referenced in this thread, which are not being programatically ignored by recent versions of PowerTools. I added the string \IME\IME to the Registry Cleaner "Ignore words" tab to suppress listing the two items. You can do something similar for whatever unremovable items you are experiencing.

To remove the entries, whether with regedit or a Macecraft program, you probably first would have to modify permissions of the applicable registry keys. I chose to just ignore the two items I couldn't remove.

As mentioned in the described here link, I have 126 items. Only 2 show when using PT2007 Beta5.

My earlier statement that PT2006 v.1.5.2.350 didn't show the 124 items was mistaken. I just ran it again, and this time, there they were.

With Vista, you have to run the program as "system administrator" even if you're the only user!!! To use the program, right click on the JV16 icon and select "run as system administrator". It will work just fine after that.

Some people, in this forum,notice that JV16pt can't delete some useless keys, even if JV16 is launched with administrator'rights. This comes from a protection due to NTFS memory gestion by Vista. To pass around this obstacle, we have to open Regedit and right click on the resisting key. We receive an authorization window where we can change the administrator's rights (from "read only" to "all rights"). As an example, after updating XP to Vista, I find 57 useless keys, analog to the following one:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Telnet-Server-Package~3bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.6000.16386

I think that this key denotes the download of some package, from Telnet Server. But I don't understand the reason why the System and the Administrator have both, only a "Read only" authorization on this key. As a result, I can't delete it: I am obliged to previously change my Authorization. Anybody can make any comment ? Thanks. MR:-)

On my Vista system, keys like the one you mention have the following characteristics:

The only "User" with Full Control is called "TrustedInstaller"

Even with Administrator privileges, the access control of these keys can not be changed with regedit ("Access is denied")

Yes, if they are never used by any program -- just leftover debris from some process.

No, definitely not, if removal would impact decisions made by an installer or other program.

Since we don't yet know which case applies, for now, I am just adding words to my Registry Cleaner "Ignore words" tab.

Look at the properties of the items in the following directories:

C:\Windows\servicing\Packages
- Contains 276 items on my system
  
  Windows Update apparently is one trusted user
  
  These items probably correspond to the "... Component Based Servicing\Packages ..." registry keys
C:\Windows\winsxs
- Contains 4781 items on my system -- one item is
  
  C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-trustedinstaller_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_8ed67188503ba527\

Only TrustedInstaller has Full Control and Modify permissions in these directories ...

TrustedInstaller is the "Windows Modules Installer" (a service) -- the executable is at C:\Windows\servicing\TrustedInstaller.exe ...

Hello! I appreciate these comments. May-be, a last point: leaving all those unremovable keys, the register health (in the sense of JV16) falls down very low: I have only 1% in "Register cleaning" ! So, all effort to clean the removable keys seems to be useless because the result is hidden by the numerous unremovable keys: my coefficeint will always remain to 1% ! ! MR:-)

IMHO, the "registry health" indicator is a bit arbitrary -- I don't take it very seriously.

In any case, if you drop the unremovable keys from your scan using the "Ignore words" tab, they are not counted against the indicator -- then, voilà, there you are again near 100%!

Ignore words example for Vista:

\IME\IME

\Component Based Servicing\Packages -- this is skipped in PT2007; on purpose? I don't know ...
