I am so frustrated right now. This program seemed to be really good and it turned out to be just junk.

I downloaded the free trial because I needed to remove a couple of programs I wasn't able to remove through the Control Panel. It turns out after the tool removed those programs now I can't use any other program in my computer. It will show the icon and recognize the type of file and everything but if I try to open something it will ask me for the install cd for whatever program I'm trying to open.

I don't know if I'm dumb of what, but you guys screwed my computer up.... Don't download this program if you haven't yet!!!

Any Ideas anyone?

First of all, Hello,

2) Posting the same message (even when nearly the same) multiple times is against the basic rules of any forum.

3) ... and it turned out to be just junk

Statments like this can only be done with 100 % of evidence and so, of course, without this, are not allowed by the basic rules of any forum.

P.s.: This performing software I am using on different computers since years without major problems.

4) To give you a serious help, you should give us a few more informations concerning the problem.

Which software version are you using?

Which are the "Backups" configurations of the tool?

Which software did you uninstall?

Looking forward to more information of you.

Jean-Paul.

Yes, multiple same posts are forbidden by the forum rules you can find and you must readhere , especially rule number 3!!!

I'm sorry if I sounded rude or broke forum rules but I hope you understand how frustated it was to run the jv16PowerTools 2006 hoping it was going to do some good and it actually cause damage to my computer. So far I'm counting over $500 in programs loss. It was no my intention to be offensive.

This is what happened. I downloaded the trial version.

Ran de Software Manager and checked a couple of programs I couldn't remove with the Add/Remove Program from Control Panel.

After that it rebooted and now I can't open any of my programs (Microsoft Office, Adobe Professional, Adobe Photoshop, AVG, Windows Defender, etc...) If I try to open a file or the program itself it will prompt me for the install cd. I knew the jv16 had an "undo" option but even the jv16 got uninstalled!

I was able to reinstall the Windows Defender but I'm not able to reinstall AVG, I haven't tried to reinstall any other program hoping there is a solution I don't know; but if it goes like the AVG I guess I'm doomed.

I did a System Restore but that didn't help.

I didn't mess with the Registry or anything. I opened the functions in the jv16 but I didn't run them, I closed them right away.

So, that's pretty much my problem. Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Thanks

As to a solution for your problems, read this post written by BlackDex and make and run the "fixreg.inf" file proposed by him :

Do the work with notepad and copy and paste the contents of the code.

Don't forget to make a backup of your registry previously, in case ...

Hi,

Thanks for the advice and the help. I followed the instructions and ran the code and a pop-up came up saying: Installatioon Failed.

Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks a lot for the help.

OK, let's try to do the job manually by editing the registry.

You know that's a risky thing, so make a System Restore Point previously.

Go to "Run" and enter "Regedit".

Go to the key HKey_Classes_Root\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command.

The default correct string value of that key is (and must be) "%1" %* (with quotation marks!).

So, if the found value is wrong, fix it and if it's right, well leave it alone.

Do the same thing for the key: Hkey_Local_Machine\Classes\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command.

That's it and let's hope it will fix your problems :

PS: if the found values are OK, then I don't know anymore :

Thanks for the advice once again.

I checked my Registry as instructed and the values are OK..."%1" %*...

There gotta a way to fix it without blowing my computer up. Such a powerful software should have warned me about it before clicking OK to anything :| And the website should have big red warning labels all over the place. It shouldn't be advertised as an easy-failsafe tool to use:

"Our Windows optimization utilities can help you to fix and clean your Windows based PC with ease, you really don't have to be an expert in order to use our software!" -- http://www.macecraft.com :?

My friend advised me to download and run Registry Mechanic. What do you think?

Please help me out, this kind of things shouldn't happen in a well written program.

I ran it on my friend's laptop and it worked fine, that's why I decided to run it on mine. Obviusly my experience was bad. There gotta be way to fix this mess guys.

Once again, thanks for your attention and your help.

Leo

I bought Registry Mechanic. Ran it. Nothing :(

It found over 2,000 issues with the registry and fixed them all but it didn't fix the issues with my programs caused by JV16 :?

So, that's it???...I just have to pick up the pieces?!?!

Well Done JV16 :|

What about using a Windows "System Restore" from before the "disaster"?

Why didn't you use already such a System Restore or wasn't it enabled?

Could you tell me exactly what programs did you uninstall with the Software Manager? Did you use the normal Uninstall feature or the Custom Uninstall?

To be clear: what exactly happened after you clicked the Uninstall/Custom Uninstall button of the Software Manager? jv16 PT closed down and uninstalled itself? Or did you notice jv16 PT got uninstalled after a reboot? Have you checked whether its directory is still on your hard disk? (It's by default at c:\program files\jv16 PowerTools 2006\)

redseujac,

In my second post you will read I did a System Restore for 24 prior disaster but that didn't help. :

------------

jv16 (developer),

Thanks for your interest in the matter.

I apologize, because I wasn't expecting chaotic results so I don't recall 100% details of what happened. I remember what I did though.

I opened the jv16, clicked on the Software Manager, check-marked the two programs I wanted to remove (two or three AOL stuff) and clicked uninstall.

I don't recall doing Custom Uninstall, after that was done I wanted to check the other tools so I opened them just to look at them but did nothing, just closed them again.

Then rebooted my computer and when windows came up "Windows Installer" pop-ups started coming up for most programs installed in my computer (Microsoft Office Professional, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Adobe Photoshop cs, AVG, Windows Defender, My mp3 player program and others...) asking for installation cd's.

So I cancelled everyone of them and opened the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel. I saw all my programs were still showing there. So I closed that and tried to opened them nothing. That's when I did the System Restore. Nothing.

I tried to uninstall Microsoft Office through Control Panel and it told me there was nothing to uninstall. I tried to uninstall the jv16 and it told me there was nothing to uninstall. At this point I just wanted to have my computer protected so I tried several times to uninstall and install the AVG and the Windows Defender.

I was able to install the Windows Defender but I'm still not able to install the AVG.

Pretty much since then is when I've been in the forum trying whatever you guys tell me without success.

I ran Registry Mechanic and it seemed to help a little bit but my programs still don't run. Now there is something interesting going on. If I try to open Microsoft Office Professional 2003, the installer comes up and then tells me:

A required installation file SKU011.CAB could not be found.

I googled it and then followed the instructions by Microsoft support (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896866) and everything seems to be ok.

Ran LISTOOL as they instruct and then it tells me that it encountered an error 0x8007006e and I hit cancel and that's it.

Today I tried to open Adobe Acrobat and the same thing happens but then it opens :| weird... does it work? yes, no? If I try to create a PDF then it tells me:

Acrobat Distiller : Error Initializing JDF Library

And that's the of it...

So, That's pretty much what's going on. I haven't tried to install any other programs except for Office because I don't want to make it worse and if Office didn't install I guess the others won't.

I'm sorry if I blab too much, I just wanted to give you as many details as possible.

I will be really appreciative of any help you could offer. No body likes to loose their programs just like that.

Thanks!

By the way...I see the directory for the JV16PT in my computer as you said.

Have you tried this:

Start "Run" > enter "cmd" (without quotes) > enter "sfc /scannow" (without quotes).

This will probably require your Windows Installation CD and will try to replace/fix wrong or missing Windows system files and maybe some registry settings.

Make a new System restore point previously.

Have you simply tried to restore the backups jv16 PowerTools created? Is there anything under the Backups directory of jv16 PT?

And could you please be a bit more specific what you removed with the Software Manager? "AOL stuff" doesn't really tell much.

jv16 is right: first try to restore the backup(s) the PowerTools have made for you (let's hope).

Go to "C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools 2006\Backups".

There you will find at least one subdirectory (something like "000A71" or "000B9D" or "000717" ...). Open it and at the right side of Explorer you'll see the files "Entries.reg" and "index.dat".

Right click on "Entries.reg" and click on "Merge" > "Yes". Normally the saved entries are added again to the registry and after rebooting you should be able to run your programs again.

Guys,

Thanks a lot for the advice and your time.

I looked for the backup directory but is not in there. The only folder in C:\Program Files\jv16 PowerTools 2006\ is "Settings" and in that folder the only thing with the name backup is called "BackupPruning" (?)

I will try and do the "sfc /scannow" but I gotta look for my windows installation cd first.

Jv16,

I used to have AOL installed in my computer and then I uninstalled but it will still show things in the Add/Remove Programs that wouldn't go away. There were three things I don't remember the names. They all started with AOL. I think one was AOLdialer. Maybe one called AOLicon. Not sure. Sorry.

I will let you know what happens with the "sfc /scannow"

Thanks a lot again
