Disk wipe

I am a bit scared to try this program. All that I want to do is remove any data in the free space. I want to make sure that none of the existing data is touched. So, here is my idea of how to protect myself:

Create a system restore point

Do a backup of the registry

Wipe out the free space.

Any other safety issues? Do I have to back anything else up? Do I have to create an image of the hard drive (seems like overkill)
