jv16 PowerTools 2007 Beta5 released

What operating system you are using?
jv16 wrotetullik wroteHistory/MRU Cleaner
- These two lines have duplication (same as in Beta4):
- 1. Microsoft, Windows Open/Save dialog
2. Microsoft, Windows (2 is a smaller subset of 1, and all its entries are duplicates of entries in 1)
Counting and removal of the MRUList entries under this key (and perhaps others) is not consistent:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\...
Could you use the History/MRU cleaner's Show data feature (right-click) to give me some more information about these issues?
The first screenshot has two lines highlighted. The second and third screenshots are the "Show data" results.
All 27 items in the second shot are also present in the third (only partially shown). History Cleaner has a count of 28 (not 27). Possibly one of the MRUList entries is included in the count, although none are shown by the Show data feature.
In the third shot, many MRUList entries show. The backup shows they were removed.

Thank you for the screenshots. I had hard times with this problem since the History/MRU Cleaner of Beta5 already contains a duplicate data remover. But there were some design flaws which made it possible that duplicate data would show.
These problems are now fixed, again, thank you for your patience.
1) The Registry Cleaner always left the same items after cleaning. It was having to do with the remnants of Google Desktop which had been uninstalled. However, after "cleaning" and restarting, then "cleaning" and restarting again, the problem items did disappear in the registry.
2) Disk Defragmenter does not work on my laptop.
One thing I didn't like (though not a "bug") was that when I chose to run a feature full screen the program defaulted back to a smaller screen in the center as soon as it needed to do any work. On a smaller laptop screen it's hard to see much information without resizng tabs and scrolling, so I like to keep running software in focus as full screen. Resizing the screen again each time the program finished was not convenient.
Hopefully I'll have more time to use this interesting software some more, just to see if any of the many other featurs have an actual use to me.
'Sorry if I left anything out as I've never actually submitted a bug report before. I'm not much for playing with Beta versions, but a friend had me try your 2006 tools a few days ago, and seeing the 2007 version I wanted to determine if it was worth it to make the change. That's still to be determined I suppose, as one can't fairly compare a stable, working version with a Beta that doesn't have new features working yet.
Jv, you are welcome. I'm glad the screenshots were of some help.
By the way, I didn't see the OCC issues below addressed in your fix reports. Perhaps other OCC fixes incidentally removed these bugs?
tullik wroteOne Click Cleaner (OCC)
- 1. Removes the "Never show again" items specified in SuperHistoryCleanerIgnoreList.dat.
...
2a. Puts out this message ("Empty directories" tab active) ...: : Failed to backup "C:\WINDOWS\Temp"! The tool should not be attempting to remove or backup any of the actual Temp directories. ...
...
4. This message from File Cleaner appears in the main window message box: "Warning: Always verify the found files before removing them!" -- with One Click Cleaner, there is no list to verify -- the message should be suppressed for OCC.

I believe this is a result of the new "message box" feature which appends to the bottom of the applicable window. Of course if the applicable window is maximized, you could not see the appended message box. In an earlier Beta, another user running with the window maximized requested that PT show some indication that new messages are in the message box. So jv16 changed the behavior to what you are now experiencing.
Two possible alternate approaches for RCx when new messages appear:
- 1. When the window is maximized, unmaximize it but let the window occupy all of the screen except leave just enough room at the bottom for the scrollable message box.
2. Place a message in the status bar of the maximized window, something like "There are xx new messages in the message box." ...

Thank You.
1) It took two separate "clicks" on the program to get the software to launch. The first time I click the program, there is a listing of the program on the task bar, then it shuts down. The second clicking of the program icon gets the program to startup.
2) I had a number of failures on the Registry Cleanup feature for Norton Internet Security 2007: it suggests that it cannot cleanup the registry for 3 problems related to NIS 2007. A logfile of the program lists the following in each of these cases:
High, HKLM\Software\Symantec\CCPD\SuiteOwners\{0D7956A2-5A08-4ec2-A72C-DF8495A66016}\, ParentPlugin, D:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\NISPlug.NSI, File or directory "D:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\NISPlug.NSI" does not exist, 09.02.2007, 20

What error message did it say? If it says Access denied then the access is denied, there's nothing jv16 PT can do about it. Most likely the registry entries are protected by the product (Internet Security 2007) and cannot be removed normally.
The new Software left-over scan module I mentioned earlier is now coded and it has passed all our safety tests with amazing 95%-100% accuracy. By accuracy I mean the amount of errors it can detect without detecting even a single false positive (i.e. an item that is valid but is reported to be invalid by the cleaner). It would be easy to make all the scan modules to work with 100% accuracy if they could repot a false positive or few sometimes, but that's not an option. The safety always comes before cleaning performance.
The only problem with the new module is that it is rather slow, on a fast computer it takes some 70-90 seconds to run while the other scan modules take only 20-30 seconds combined. I'll try to find ways to speed it up.
The RC1 will be released in this month.

Maybe I'm speaking only for me (and those raised in less "instant" times!) but 70-90 seconds isn't bad IF that time makes it the most accurate/complete and safe cleaner on the market. Time to clean for me is TOTAL time spent cleaning. Period. The time the scanner runs is the smallest part of the total time in cleaning the registry for any smart user. I count not only the scanner's time, but the time it takes me to go through the results line by line. A fool that doesn't check a scanner's results might have to count the time required to re-install software (or Windows) in their "total time"! Then if the scanner leaves persistant items or doesn't do a thorough job the first time I have to reboot and repeat again (just scanning again without a reboot doesn't provide me with the resuls I'm looking for). Sometimes repeating this cycle several times. All this "time" adds up. So by all means, if you've found ways to make the scanner better in ONE pass, more accurate, more complete, and more safe, don't worry about the 90-seconds. Teach your potential buyers and users about the REAL cost of time and you will have a winning product.

Great. I'm looking forward to a working version of the Defragmenter (fingers crossed that it works this time on all my machines), and other touches/fixes (especially to the registry cleaner) as you get closer to the Final.
I'm new to your software... but somewhat intrigued as you can see.
