I'm running jv 16 Power Tools 2006 Version 1.5.2.350, having just updated to that version from the previous build. I ran Registry Cleaner and it found 986 items. It started the fix by attempting to create a backup - I have Settings configured to always backup before cleaning - but most files could not be backed up.

After the backup progress bar starts, I receive the first error message stating that it cannot backup a certain file. When I click OK, another immediately pops up. After several dozen of these I reaslized that every item was getting this notification and I would be here all day - and not back anything up.

First, there does not appear to be a way to stop this process, other than ending the process from the Windows Task Manager, which I do not feel entirely comfortable with.

Subsequent attempts yield identical results. The backup cannot be created, and I have to stop jv16 by ending the process.

Any thoughts as to why this is occuring? Also, is there anyhway to stop the program when it does this other than ending the process?

Thank you.

Sorry - I missed that, didn't I?

Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all hot fixes.

Check if you have the right permisions.

If you are running as a normal/poweruser it could be that for some reason you don't have access to the place where the backups are stored or something like that.

Try to start PowerTools with Administrator rights, and check what happens.

Thanks, but I am the Administrator and was signed in as such. I don't think that it's a rights permission issue.

The problem is caused either by two things:

1. The program cannot access the registry in order to create a backup, or

2. The program cannot access the hard disk drive in order to save the created backup to a file.

If you want to, I could add some debug code to the upcoming jv16 PowerTools 2007 Beta1 that could help us to solve the problem. Would you wish me to do that?

I have just downloaded Powertools 2006 trial version and run registry cleaner. As I thought it found over 1200 entries to be fixed, giving me a score of 1 out of 100. I clicked on the backup when asked but got the same problem as J-mac.

Instead of stopping I just clicked ok on each prompt. No backup was saved. Am running XP SP2 with all updates.

I restarted computer and did another run of registry cleaner. It found 800 entries this time nearly all high and gave me a score of 3 out of 100.

Luckily I had backed up my registry myself and a system restore before installing Powertools.

I have now got rid of powertools as it seems to have a few issues :-

It didnt clean the registry very well.

It failed to backup the registry.

I am logged in as administrator on my home network.

I just tried to restore from the registry monitor as I had taken a snapshot and labeled it but one of the listings will not backup and I have to close using the task manager. Is there some other way to restore the items I asked to have backups made for before I uninstalled them?

Thanks,

Lex

Lex forgot to mention it is Windows XP w/ SP2 and updates and that it should not be an admin. permission issue either.
