Loss of downloaded software

I am a new user as of yesterday.

Over the past few years, all the software I purchase and download, I keep a copy in "downloads" on my c drive. If anything goes wrong with the original installation, or I change computers, I always have a backup copy.

Yesterday, in removing some no longer used programs from my system, I used the backup facility and took some programs off. I noticed that the program also found the copy of the software in the "downloads" file but thought if that is deleted also, that is fine.

However today I checked my download directory and found it virtually empty. Over 50 or 60 programs totally gone.

I certainly didn't expect this to happen.

One of the programs I wanted to delete was Google web accelerator. When I tried to restore this backup, the software just crashed.

I did get some of the programs back by restoring 2 other deletion sessions. However the backups were not good in that the restored programs were not functional

Any suggestions as to how I recover the rest? Any thoughts as to why it crashes on the Google web accelerator item?

An adder a day later - I found I had doen a backup of my downloads file on a separate drive a few months back. All was not lost. But the jv16 program issues still bother me.

What exactly did you do and with what product? jv16 PowerTools? If yes, what version did you use?

Yes I used jv16PowerTools - the latest version ( 1.5.2.349) through the download facility.

The reason I purchsed PowerTools was to deal with a narly 3 year old laptop that has had a lot of applications run on it and had become very slow.

The first thing I did was to use the "software" utility to take off any software I was not presently using. This is where the problem occurred. The software apparently picks up the installed application as well as the uninstalled downloaded software, that I kept in my c:\download file.

I have examples right now where I have deleted the application using the windows software but the original download file is still in my c:\ downloads file. The jv16Powertools software picks up on and identifies the download files. Any other deletion software I have used does not do this.

My thought was to let jv16PowerTools take it out of the download file, since I am not going to use it again anyway. Unfortunately, it took virtually everything else in the download file.

Is there an explanation for this?

Well I can't say I am impressed with this forum. In answer to my question about a faulty product, I get two additional questions but absolutely no answers or suggestions whatsoever.

i have read your posting with great interest and think that you made the same mistake a friend of mine did : he used programmes without really making familiar what a programme does .

I must say , that i use the jvp-Powertools for over 6 years by now and cannot remember any time that the programme didnt work properly .I have tried out other regestry and system management software and still think that JVC powertools are the best .

i dare to say that by using the software manager you did not only remove programmes , but also some of other essentialo files by doing so . I really wonder that your computer still boots up and works .

I also wonder that you dont have any backup or image of your harddrive i.e. active partition.

Whats about the internal backup-tool of JVC ? have you used it ?

Well, here is the notice the Software Manager gaves you:

This software seems to be installed at: "C:\Downloads file\". Do you wish to delete the directory

Your answer was "Yes" and so the tool did delete the whole directory and not only the file.

You see, using a tool like Powertools - working in vital parts of the system, as the registry - for the first time, a must should be to read the documentation and espacilly the warnings (in the PT-handbook in red). By a second step, to familiarize with the procedures and options, should be done some tests with copies of files and folders.

You showed me where my mistake was, when the message said the software was in the directory and not just a file.

I did read the instructions provided but I don't think it covered my issue.

The registry cleaner had a very large cleanup to do and some problems regarding linkages beween two programs occured. I had to remove one more software program and run the repair feature on Microsoft Word before things returnrd to normal again.

When the cleanup involves more than a thousand lines, it is meaningless to think you will read and understand each line.

Well, it's rather difficult to answer your questions if I can't understand what you have exactly done.

As stated before, the Software Manager deletes files only if the user gives the program a permission, it always asks whether a directory should be deleted or not. If the user gives the permission then the data is removed.
