No registry cleaner backup.

I just downloaded jv16 power tools 2006. I ran the registry cleaner and it showed over 500 errors. It then asked me if I wanted to make a backup before I ran fix. When I attempted it I got a message box stating.

"Failed to back up".

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\UNINSTALL\KB8887472 MODIFY"!

I'm pretty new at this and have no idea what this means. If possible please keep any answers simply.

I forgot to mention that once the above message appears I can't cancel it and my computer is locked up. The only way I can reboot is to turn the power off and back on.

Hello Booker,

It seems like this has something to do with permisions or something.

Are you the 'Administrator' of your computer?

So no limited user account?

Also, some firewalls and/or Anti-Virus software can block registry changes attempts.

Try to disable those programs when trying to cleanup the registry and enable it afterwards.

Or.. check if you can add PowerTools to some kind of exclude list.

Thanks for the reply. I did turn off my firewall (zone alarm) but didn't seem to be able to turn off AVG virus program. I ran registry cleaner again and got the same results.

Would it be prudent to run Fix without a backup?

You can try the fix..

But i sugest not to use the Aggressive registry scan.. and just the normal in this case.

I never have to restore a backup (not yet atleast :) )

Also, you could try in the safe mode of Windows.

You can do this by pressing F8 during startup, and select Safe Mode with network.

Thisway no programs are started, and if it works then, there is some program blocking PowerTools its attemts of fixing/removing usless entries.

I ran a regular registry scan without the backup. Identified over 800 errors. I used Fix without backup, it fixed 79 errors and deleted over 700. A second scan showed 12 errors and I was able to use backup. A third scan, no errors.

I think I'm fixed.
