JV2006 Breaks StartRight

Hi Everyone, This is my first posting to JV/Macecraft so be kind!

I have run JV2005 Power Tools for about 6 months after they were highly recommended by Fred Langa of the Langa List. No problems whatsoever, hence never a need to post here before. However, upon starting to use the 2006 version of JV I found that it completely breaks one of the handiest little programs you are likely to come across: StartRight from 'Jackass Joe's'(version 1.3.2). Startright is a startup program manager - the only completely sorted one of its type I could find - and it is free. This program allows you to dictate the order and delay in time of each of your startup progs and registry run-keys so its a real blessing. After running JV2006 it stuffs it up completely. JV presents you with some registry keys saying they are "useless" so once they, and some other mysterious keys are deleted through JV then Startright totally loses the plot. The author of StartRight says to ask JV why it is doing this as he's had no other probs like this. I think it may have something to do with the fact JV doesn't like the fact that StartRight pulls all the startup run-keys and programs from Windows control and does it all in the StartRight prog. Has anyone come across this or similar? I fully understand that one must be super careful in deciding what to delete when presented with the list from JV but there are too many to do a trial and error thing with it. It is a shame as if I can't get this sorted out I will be faced with having to decide which program to ditch - JV or StartRight - a choice I don't want to have to make as I find both, normally, indispensible. Can anybody please help. Oh, running WinXP Pro, fully patched & up to date, system maintained as well as possible. Not a single other problem but this. many Thanks.

Obviously your post refers to jv16 PowerTools 2006.

So, posting it aldo under the heading "jv16 PowerTools 2005" is not the right way to proceed.

I notice you posted your problem also here.

Well in the future you'd better don't do that again, because posting twice at different forum subdivisons is prohibited by the forum rules you can find here, especially rule number 3 ( Posting the same (or almost the same) message to multiple boards is not allowed.).

Maybe the author himself (jv16) is able to give you the right explanation, but personally I don't think jv16PT2006 "doesn't like the fact StartRight pulls all the startup run-keys and programs from Windows control and does it all in the StartRight prog", as you wrote.

Hopefully jv16 can tell uou (and us) about it :

You don't provide any details about the StartRight items. What does one look like? What is the Registry Cleaner error description?

Without some specific information, even "trial and error" might not suffice.

Perhaps the Registry Cleaner "Ignore words" tab feature would allow the two programs to coexist even if neither one is changed ...

To reproduce the jv16pt vs StartRight incompatabilities you infer, I installed StartRight 1.3.1.1521 on my desktop PC.

1. It moved the HKLM Run items to its own key structure in HKLM\Soft\JackassArswareOrg\StartRight.

2. It did not touch the HKCU Run items (there is one in my registry).

3. There were no problems during a restart.

4. jv16pt Registry Cleaner showed no errors related to StartRight.

5. jv16pt Startup Manager showed only two StartRight items and the one HKCU Run item (expected).

6. There were no problems during a second restart.

7. jv16pt Registry Cleaner again showed no errors related to StartRight.

Conclusion: There were no jv16pt vs StartRight incompatabilities in the above scenario.

Thank you very much tullick, for taking the time to load StartRight and go through all of that work. You downloaded the latest 'current' version. I think I may have to try the same as I am actually using an even 'later version' (beta 1.3.2-3) which may be the cause of my grief. One wouldn't imagine this however but stranger things have happened. Incidentally, I have just, in the last few hours, been playing with MetaProducts 'Startup Organiser' (Paid Version trial) and it seems a very polished product. No such problems with it and JV162006 lists no references to it at all during a registry cleanup. Makes me think the beta version of StartRight could be at issue.

Just noticed I had no items in any Startup folder, so the scenario did not cover the case where there are such items. Maybe you can test that ...

The RC Ignore words tab remains as a solution -- I doubt that jv16pt would change any time soon to handle modifications to normal windows key schemes.
