The RC dialog that appears when RC is fixing/deleting entries does not refresh (repaint) in a timely manner (usually not at all).

This is basic GUI programming and should be corrected prior to final release.

I understand that the loop to update the dialog will use some clock cycles, but I doubt anyone will mind.

I think I read this somewhere before, but after a quick search did not find it here:

The Backup Tool needs to be moved from the File menu to the Tools menu. As its name implies, the intuitive choice is the Tools menu.

I see. You must be using IE instead of Firefox? I just tried IE and they are not readable ... unless you click on the image in the new window (it toggles).

And Firefox loads it faster. But with a cable modem, both are pretty fast ...

Directory finder isnt working too well. Not sure if this is new or not with rc3. Wasnt finding directories named symantec in folders such as document settings/ all users/ local settings/applications/symantec even when i searched for symantec or even symantec* It did however pick up the folder in program files and when i clicked move to recycle bin the folder remained even though it showed it was deleted. Ran the directory finder again and picked up the same folder and would never actually delete the folder.

By the way I did uncheck skip deep directory searching

I was looking for a warning message from F&R.

But there was none in RC3:

A Word 2003 document is on the desktop for File Finder to find. F&R is given 7 search words, which exist in the document.

Situation 1: Word does not have the document open. F&R finds only one word in the Word document. Clicking Replace hangs all the PT windows. CPU is at 100%. The F&R window has to be Xed, which takes down all the PT windows. The Word document is no longer readable by Word. Its size has changed from 17.5KB to 257 bytes.

In another iteration of this test, which ended the same way, Word could still read the Word document.

In another iteration of this test, which ended normally, the Word document was no longer readable by Word. Its size changed from 17.5KB to 253 bytes.

In another iteration of this test, F&R found no words in the Word document.

Situation 2: Word has the document open. In six or seven iterations, F&R showed no hits in the word file. Perhaps the fix mentioned in one of the above links detects the file open state and avoids it. ???

Conclusion: users should follow the advice in the manual since F&R can destroy binary files without a warning, a la Situation 1.

I uninstalled HP memories disc from my computer.

I ran regcleaner and the following error appeared using the debug: validate button

"Synonym" handling (+) by RC Custom Fix

I did an RC run with these settings:

Options: all scans checked except HKLM, HKCL, HKCC, and ActiveX/usv

Mode: Normal mode checked

Advanced options: only "Use as little CPU power as possible" checked

Ignore words: none

The run displayed 44 lines. The following describes the lines:

18 lines = HKCU and HKUS twin fod.dne lines, which are OpenSaveMRU type entries

8 lines = HKCU and HKUS twin fod.dne lines, which are entries from three applications' recent file list

4 lines = HKCU and HKUS twin fod.dne lines, which are for two Money 7.0 items

1 line = an HKCU fod.dne for a Photo Editor item

1 line = an HKUS fod.dne with the error in the entry name, not in the value

6 lines = two HKLM oarme keys, each followed by two entry names under the key

2 lines = HKLM oarme key only lines

1 line = an HKLM obsolete software entry

2 lines = HKCL and HKLM twin ufe lines, which are for a file extension item

1 line = an HKCU ufe key only (HKCU\Soft\MSoft\Win\CurVer\Explorer\FileExts\.dat_000609\)

Synonym characteristics in Registry Cleaner

1. If you "Remove" an HKCL or HKUS synonym line, it drops from the RC list; its partner does not. Its partner is no longer in the registry (per regedit).

2. If you "Remove" an HKLM synonym line, it drops from the RC list; its HKCL partner does not. Its partner is no longer in the registry (per regedit).

3. If you "Remove" an HKCL synonym line, it drops from the RC list; its HKLM partner does not. Its partner is no longer in the registry (per regedit).

4. Restoring either part of an HKCU/HKUS synonym pair using the BT, restores both parts.

5. Restoring either part of an HKCL/HKLM synonym pair using the BT, restores both parts.

The above dialog describes recent actual tests of the RC "Remove" function. There were no flaws, only "characteristics," all of which are transparent to the casual user.

New tests

Note: When I say below that nothing happened on the list, I refer only to the line part of the RC window. The item appearing in the CF window does also show in the top of the RC window.

Test 1: Removed all with RC to get a "clean" backup -- 44 lines dropped from list -- RC rescan had 0 lines -- backup contained 29 items -- restored OK with BT

Test 2: Used CF for only the ufe lines (3) -- CF presented the three lines one at a line with Delete radio button preselected -- OK button brought up the next item -- the list did not change -- RC rescan showed 44 lines -- backup was empty (index.dat only in backup directory) -- the three lines were key-only lines

Conclusion: CF does not remove key-only entries.

Test 3: Used CF for only the ose line (1) -- CF presented the lines with Delete radio button preselected -- OK did not change the list -- regedit showed the item still in the registry -- backup was empty -- the line was a key-only line

Conclusion: CF does not remove key-only entries.

Test 4: Used CF for only the oarme lines ( 8 ) -- CF presented the lines with Delete radio button preselected -- nothing happened in the list for key-only lines -- lines with an entry-name dropped from the list -- four selected key-only lines remained on the list -- regedit showed these keys were still in the registry -- backup contained six items (the keys and entry-name values for the lines that had entry-names) -- RC rescan showed 38 lines -- the key-only items were not deleted by CF

Conclusion: CF does not remove key-only entries. The key data is backed up as part of the process of backing up the removed entry-name value lines.

Test 5: Used CF for only the fod.dne twin lines (30) -- CF presented the lines with Delete radio button preselected in some cases, or with a Fix option preselected if CF found the filename in another path (changed some of these to Delete; let the preselected Fix go in some) -- the line represented in the CF window dropped from the list if it was the first occurence of a twin, or if the Fix suggestion was allowed to go -- otherwise, if it was the second occurence, nothing happened in the list; CF just cycled to another line -- 8 selected lines remained on the list -- regedit showed the entry-name/values were no longer in the registry - RC rescan showed 15 lines -- a temp ose line appeared on the list (HKCU\Soft\Temp_03A022AB {KEY} {KEY}), so there were really only 14 lines from the original set -- all of the 30 lines were either removed from or "fixed" in the registry -- backup contained 15 items which restored the prior registry state (three RC rescans in a row only showed 43 lines, but, per regedit, the missing item was in the registry) -- restored the backup from Test1 -- RC rescan still showed only 43 lines -- hacked the registry with regedit to put the found value right under the missed value ... identical!!!

Conclusion: CF properly removes or fixes twin items, but leaves flotsam on the RC list. RC occasionally misses an error item (not real serious ... maybe tomorrow it gets found). :) But see added note below ...

Test 6: Used CF for only the fod.dne not twin lines (2) -- CF presented the lines with Delete radio button preselected -- OK dropped each line in turn from the list -- RC rescan showed 41 lines -- both items were out of the registry -- backup restored them -- RC rescan showed 43 lines (still not 44) -- did this again but chose a Fix option for one of the lines -- OK dropped each line in turn from the list -- RC rescan showed 42 lines -- the deleted item is not in the registry, the fixed item was not fixed (still has the erroneous "path" per regedit)

Conclusion: CF properly removes non-twin fod.dne items and correctly purges the list, but a fix did not take.

Test 7: Used CF for all the lines (still 43 ...) -- took the default action in each case -- 14 selected lines were left on the list -- 8 were Key-only lines, 6 were the second occurence of twinned items -- the DEBUG button showed a variety of messages, so screenshots are included at the end of this -- backup contained 31 items -- One oarme item seems to be missing and one fod.dne item was duplicated -- RC rescan showed 26 lines -- apparently several deletes and fixes did not "take" -- removed all the lines so restore could be tested -- RC rescan showed 0 lines -- backup from the RC remove had 19 items (one was the oarme item missing from the earlier backup in this test; it was not on the list (its key was on the list)) -- restored the earlier backup -- did an RC rescan -- 36 lines were on the list -- restored the second backup -- rescanned -- 42 lines were on the list -- apparently the item miissing in the first backup but present in the second backup did not restore -- but it did! (per regedit) -- this is the item: "Changed"=dword But see added note below ...

Conclusion: Results with a mix of error types selected for CF were a composite of all the unmixed tests of single type, but there were many flaws in the synchronization of remove/backup/list purge processing!

Test 8: Restored the Test1 backup, exited PT, restarted PT and ran an RC scan -- list had 42 lines - the two items mentioned as not showing or missing (one in Test 5, the other in Test 7) were not on the list, but, per regedit, they were in the registry!

Added note: I just examined "SuperRegIgnoreList.dat" in the PT Settings directory. The mystery of the two items missing from the rescans is solved. There they are in that list! Cause? I don't think I ever checked "Don't show this item again in the Registry Cleaner" ... but Ockham's razor says that's most likely what happened. Think positive! ... the test of "SuperRegIgnoreList.dat" showed it works very well! :)

I'm a jv16 2006 Beta (Rc3 )tester and I have a few comments regarding the start menu fixer module:

My setup has many shortcuts (including numerous dulicates, for organizational purposes. I find the current User Interface (a yes no dialog) for choosing to modify or delete (as apprpriate) to be very clumsy for such a setup. I offer some possible ways to improve this:

1) Make the choosing list or tree based, rather than one-at-a-time by a dialog. ( Ontrack/Vcom Fix it utilities works (very nicely) this way...)

Barring that...

2) Use color, dialog titling, or other obvious visual cues, to more clearly indicate whether this dialog is for a chasnge or a delete.

3) Add additional action choices such as:

a) yes to all; no to all; cancel

or even more specific (and granular)

b) yes to all changes, in or between these directories,discs, etc

c) allow removal of the invalid shortcut from the change dialog (this would be useful for cases such as "unwise.exe" and readme.txt. which often offer erronious reassignments.

d) be smarter about the dialog messages -- do some of the work for the user, where possible. Example:

if offering a change from

p:\program files\x/y/doit.exe to

c:\Program files\x/y/doit.exe

Make it easier to see what's changing by vertical allignment as I have attempted here; use of higliting/color. to make the changed item (here, the disk letter) stand out or simply say:

change pointer to "\program files\x/y/doit.exe from P: to C". the more general cases coulds be handled using path factoring.
