I am running 32bit Vista Home premium, however although others have stated that the Quick Analysis is now working I still have it hanging up around 70% completed....I then have to abort.

I check that the PT2008-RC1 was the latest download and that appears quite okay.

I would also say that the File Cache works well on PT2007....so I am mystified the Quick Analysis is still bugging me (sorry no pun intended). :

RC1 crashes

When I run the registry cleaner, the program aborts without leaving a log or an entry in the events file. How can I make the program generate a trace file that will survive after it aborts? This is not new behaviour. It didn't work in the beta release, either.

Simply run the program in debug mode, to do this: start the program, while in the Main Window, press down Ctrl and Shift. A Debug menu should be now visible in the main menu, you can use that to enable and disable the debug mode. When running in debug mode, the program will generate a debug log to your desktop.

Registry Finder -- search is too slow

Settings used:

Search words: i:\

Options: scan all the root keys and analyze key names, value names, and value data

With PT2007 (v 1.7.0.422), the search took just over two minutes.

With PT2008 beta1 (v 1.8.0.433), the search took considerably longer (about six times as long).

In this clickable graph, the PT2007 run is on the left; part of the PT2008 run is on the right:

I noticed that. Entries showing "StringDate" showed "N/A" in prior PT versions.

Since "StringDate" is as good a date as "N/A" and "N/A" is frequently used by the tool to "display" non-text data, I didn't bother to report it. Many (most?) lines do show actual dates.

Does your report mean we will see actual dates for the lines with no displayed date in prior versions?

It looks like a duck and walks like a duck, but if it's a policy, I suppose Anas policie can be worked around.

Workaround attempt #1:

Search words: CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist and \Registry\

Options: search only HKLM and analyze key names and value names

Ignore words: ControlSet0 and SystemPartition and {KEY}

Result: failure

The tool showed 218 lines with \registry\ in the value data. I did not ask the tool to analyze value data. It showed zero lines with \registry\ in the value name.

Surely this is a bug.

The Startup Manager is showing programs from the system Task Scheduler as part of the Startup Menu list

I found one of my old feedbacks to see what is still relevant and get some new ideas of what to test

so here we go

Startup Manager

I used the New button to add "C:\" with some random caption

It did work but it doesn't show up in SM's list for some reason, even if i reset the program.

I still think you should integrate Startup Manager with msconfig by using the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

keys for disabled items.

With a full integration SM should show the msconfig disabled ones on the list and add its own disabled ones there

Registry Manager

Refresh current section in Registry Manager does nothing, same as the F5 key ( i changed stuff to check)

What about adding an "open with regedit" right menu option for Add/Remove Menu (and New file)?

Registry Find & Replace

Although the list is empty, i can still right click and choose to open with regedit.

I can choose Remove from the list which makes the Replace button gray.

Registry Monitor

If you close the Registry Monitor Create Snapshot window by clicking on its X button while it is working strange thing happen because it is not the same as clicking cancel for some reason.

It exits to the main window, and if you open Registry Monitor again and try to create Create Snapshot again, you will see that the process line is still moving.

Export as .reg file doesn't ask anything about overwriting a file that already exists with the same name!

If a key has been removed since the snapshot, what exactly does the Delete button do :) ? If it does nothing it should not report back simply All done! 0 B of data was removed (0 registry entries and 0 keys).. it should pop up some error about the fact you can't delete such key as it was already removed.

Registry Information

Closing the tool (using the close button and maybe even the X button) while it is analyzing can cause it to write the threads finished messages in the main window message box.

There is really no way to export the data to a text file?

File Finder

I think a file type column, simply so i can sort by file extension is missing badly

I created a text file with the string 333 in it

I tried to use the Find & Replace feature to replace it with 5555 , what it did was remove that data all together! It also didn't give any feedback after pressing the replace button, it grayed out the Replace button for a few seconds and then enabled it again, no done no failed nothing....

The Change Attributes window should give some feedback after pressing the OK button in the Change Attributes window, i deleted the file before pressing OK so obviously the tool did nothing but no feedback was given about the failure

If the Encrypt tool is dealing with a file already deleted pressing Start will simply do nothing instead of giving some error about not being able to find the file.

Mass Rename tool need more than one file but if i select 2 files and then delete one of them from the HD it will still open (although it Failed to access one of the files)

The merge feature doesn't even notice one of the files does not exist and it "merges" one file to a new name without giving any errors.

The Find & Replace feature also doesn't give any errors about not being able to find the file (if i delete the file after the search words dialog is opened- before starting the search)

Mass Rename renames non existent files in the results list (although it did nothing as the files aren't there anymore) and gives no error about the file not really being renamed....

Splitting a file that no longer exist makes the "Working. This might take awhile. Please wait..." window pop-up and of course nothing happens until the user click on the cancel button...

When i add columns (Size for example) it isn't being populated at all and since it doesn't remember i added that column when i restart the program i really see no way to populate it ?!?

Select a file, Remove it. now select another, choose Analyze (for example) from the Extended functions menu: it will fail and tell you " Selection of only one file to which the operation should be performed"

Directory Tool

After emptying a folder it doesn't update the number of files listed in the Files column

The Rename... feature gives no error in case it failed (because i deleted the folder before pressing OK...)

Search dialogs in all tools

A save as default settings button is missing in all search dialogs (for example when searching in the backup tool). At minimum it should remember the search settings for the current session of the tool.

Duplicate File Finder

Shouldn't the number of duplicates next to the size tree category be updated after i remove an item?

Options: search only HKLM and analyze key names and value data

Ignore words: ControlSet0 and SystemPartition and {KEY}

Result: success

The tool showed only 10 lines with \registry\ in the value name, and, of course, \Device\HarddiskVolume in the value data. The 10 lines match the hives shown by the Registry Compactor tool.

Note: the screenshot is a Registry Finder window (really). The title bar in RC1 shows an incorrect name (reported earlier).

unchecking skip system directories does show results for the users document folder. Why would the documents folder be skipped by having this option checked. I would think that the program files folder would be considered a system directory over the documents folder.

I just finished running 2008 registry cleaner, using the Emphasize Safety for my level. After the run, it found 1 key and 2 entries of leftover data. That was Hazardshield software. Using 2007, with Normal checked, I received the following, 1 registery error, 6 entries, that was WinPatrol software. It also identified the 1 key and 2 entries of leftover data, of Hazardshield. Assuming both of those levels, were identical. It is hard to tell, with one, just having normal and aggresive, while the other has a slider. 2008 should have identified, all of the same items, at the very least. Not sure, why, that WinPatrol registery was not identified as a registery error, along with its 6 entries. I ran 2008 before running 2007.

Here is a report of bugs confirmed and/or fixed since the last report. All these fixes are included in the next released version (the final version).

Problem: It's possible to add the same file many times to the File Tool's list using the File > Add files... but not by drag and drop.

Status: By design. While redesigning the Main Window we came to conclusion that the right-click menu wasn't really necessary.

Problem: Residual list window smudge. Sometimes, the rolling counters in the upper right corner are not completely cleared when a scan completes. See below.

* Hit Start

* Select some random entry form the results

* Click Delete

* Either create a backup or not...

* After the item is deleted simply keep pressing the delete or the fix buttons

* They will still work and report back ("The registry fixing procedure is now complete. It was possible to correct 0 items out of 1, 1 items had to...")

Status: Confirmed. You are correct, this indeed should be fixed. However, since the program is already in RC1 stage I cannot change the translation interface at this point to show this information. This issue will be fixed in a future version.

Problem: In my tests it opens the files for no reason (i just clicked once?) and in the registry cleaner it opens Regedit again for no reason.

Status: Not confirmed. However, this sounds a lot like the "hair trigger windows" bug found by tullik. In other words, the skin engine seems sometime to duplicate a single mouse click to two clicks and this is what follows. I'm afraid fixing this requires replacing the entire skin engine and that's a major operation, it will be done in the future but not right now.

Problem: When using the Raw List Mode, the Registry Cleaner's Scan Report sometimes shows with 0 errors even as errors were found.
