jv16 PowerTools 2007 released, initial thoughts?

Created a snapshot: HKLM and HKCU only.

Then tried to run Compare with the actual situation.

The message "Working ..." and the Progression Bar appear very shortly and then dissapear. Nothing happens furtherly.

I close the PowerTools and still notice activity in Windows Taskmanager of jv16PT > process is still there with very high CPU usage and 65 Meg memory usage.

Registry Monitor still doesn't work like it should work.

Note: no antivirus programs running in background.

It installed correctl in my XP Pro system.

Started it, and the message windows are kinda scrued.

I can't get the empty message-window away.

It also seems like its very slow for some reason.

I tryed closing everything and started it again.

It still seems to response slow.

Resizing and moving the windows is also responding very slow.

Automation tool - running registry cleaner in reference, structured and automatically delete, backups created by it would delete without a warning message.

When you create a snapshot in Registry Monitor you can "Cancel" the operation when it's running (busy).

Why not "Abort" like in most other tools of jv16 PowerTools?

This is an inconsistent use of "Cancel" and as far as I'm concerned it should be "Abort" 8)

When you switch from one tab to another:
* On my laptop, the sort is still "ID (ascending)"

* On my daughter's desktop, the sort is "Created (ascending)," which puts the most recent backup last in the list

* Added note: I take back that observation …

* In a later run, with more backups in the directory, I can no longer tell what the sort sequence is …

So the fix result seems to vary by machine …

File Cleaner

I ran File Cleaner to list the files in the system's temp directories.

Then I selected the files in just one of the temp directories and removed them. This worked fine.

Then I selected the files in another temp directory and clicked the remove button. Nothing happened (no backup dialogue, et cetera). I had to close the tool and run it again. This success followed by a failure happened three times in a row …

It doesn't happen with just a few files -- I had over a hundred in each remove action.

And by the way, the counts in the status bar don't always get correctly updated ...

What happened to the Cookie Manager? Will it ever be restored in a future edition?

Use FireFox with, for example, CookieSafe and make an automatic cleaning when you close FireFox. Useless to have the other thing.

Yeah, this is because of the new registry cleaner engine. The old one was a basic entry-by-entry based engine (like all the others) but the new one is a stateful registry analysis engine which requires a lot more processing power and also takes a bit longer to run, I'm afraid.

Does jv16 scan the CLSID and TYPEID entries comprehensively? I am managing to find many invalid references that jv16's registry cleaner isn't picking up.

They will only show once (except the one warning about running the Registry Cleaner in aggressive mode is shown 10 times).

The following issues I mentioned already still subsist in version 1.7.0.394 (they are NOT fixed):

1) Problems in Registry Monitor when comparing a existing snapshot to the actual registry situation --> look here

2) Registry Monitor: when creating a snapshot inconsistent use of "Cancel" --> look here

My new four pet peeves:

1) Messaging - The dialogs popping up at the bottom are really annoying when the window is maximised and clicking ok on a dialog in normal windows dialogs each time I say, remove something in the registry cleaner, is annoying.

My Suggestion - Provide a silent mode or an option to put the messages in the status bar at the bottom of the window.

2) Column sizes - I really miss the feature of 2006 where it resizes the columns in the results windows automatically so you get a better view of the data in them.

3) Extra Entries - Don't know if this is a problem with the central server, but entries that didn't appear in 2006 when you used the central server do appear in 2007 when you use the server.

4) Shallow Scan - As mentioned above, I would have loved the registry scanner to go through the CLSID and TYPEID entries and weed out invalid entries.

The backup tool no warning in deleting automation tool+reg cleaner backups, is not fixed in latest build 1.7.0.394.

Disabling MRU/History data scan still picks up some MRU lists.

Entries picked up under CurrentUser and Users\Current User.

I'm running jv16 PowerTools 2007 version 1.7.0.394 on a Windows Vista Ultimate system. The Registry Cleaner Scan Report shows 116 High severity errors, but still shows 100/100 in the System health indicator. That just doesn't seem right, and it certainly is not consistent with what I'm used to seeing in jv16 PT 2006 (or even with some of the early beta versions of 2007, where I often saw a health rating of 5/100).

Any idea of what the problem is or how I can get it to show a system health rating that is representative of the number of errors showing up?

Loving the final release.

One minor annoyance. Everytime I start up the program, a "Buy it Now icon" appears on my desktop which I duly delete.

I have a valid licence and want to stop this cluttering up my desktop. How can I do this?
