File Cleaner with only "Temp files" tab active, safe mode (Vista)

Used Ignore words iteratively to get a list of 75 .tmp files mostly in Windows directories -- selected all and used the Remove button -- backup/remove worked OK (expected exception, about 11 files marked read only).

However, a GUI problem similar to 2.c here occurred.

Bug? I don't know ...

Suggest you experiment with "File-->Settings-->Windows management" settings to see if it makes a difference ... you may find a combination you like best, bug or not ...

changed that as you said and it worked after a restart of jv16.

A minor bug ...

Incorrect message:

A. On the results list, Sun Java shows 2462 -- per "Show data," all items are files in C:\Users\Owner\application data\sun\java\deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\file

B. When the files are "Cleared,' this message results:
: All done! 0 B of data was removed (0 files, 0 directories, 0 registry entries and 2462 registry keys).

C. The files had a total size of about 36 MB .... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Not responding ...

PT is so busy building a "Custom Restore" list for the above files, that it neglects its own windows ... :

Backup Tool -- Custom Restore

I told it to restore 7 items -- it said it did, but only restored 5 ...

I told it to restore the other 2 -- it said it did, but it did not ...

I suppose this is some sort of bug ...

~~Never mind ... there was another directory (...\javapi\v1.0\jar) ... the restore of all seven items was successful. :~~

File Organizer (Vista)

File Organizer did not accept a drag and drop of the FO In (small) directory from either the Desktop, a win explorer window of the Desktop, or a copy placed on another disk. I could put it in the FO window with the "Add" button.

Added note: This drag & drop is a probable Vista issue ... it may not be fixable by PowerTools …

Note: FO In (small) directory contains copies of the PT Settings\Preferences directories from my desktop and notebook PC's ...

File Organizer did accept a drag and drop of the Settings\Preference directories from a win explorer window of Program Files.

When I applied the suggested structure, FO created a directory name that confused Vista win explorer (see lower left corner of thumbnail). I had deleted everything in the FO Out directory, but the bad name could not be deleted (or renamed). Workaround: use FO context menu to rename the bad directory before you click Apply.

Notes:

1. Nothing I tried in PT or win explorer would get rid of the bad name -- it took cmd & rmdir to do it. :

2. I could not get win explorer or cmd & mkdir to create a directory name with a trailing space or period.

3. Root bug probably is in some windows API that FO uses …

1. When you minimize the FO results window by clicking on the PT2007 item in the task bar, a little piece of the FO window is left on the Desktop.

2. Also, while it is working (Apply clicked), it keeps taking focus immediately from other non-PT windows you want to use ...

Both tools:
In Vista, drag and drop from the Desktop does not work.

In XP Pro, it does work.

Drag and drop from a win explorer window works in both Vista and XP Pro.
Added note: This drag & drop is a probable Vista issue ... it may not be fixable by PowerTools …

1. When the "History items found" count is 1, and the item is a file, "Show data" shows nothing …

2. When the "History items found" count is more than 1, and the items are files, "Show data" shows one item less than the count (same bug) -- the count is correct …

I don't know if this is already posted, but

1 - Installation - I also had to create the Tasks, Backups, Snapshots, and Cache subfolders in the install folder, because the installer didn't do it. It seems to work OK after doing that, though.

2 - Reg Compactor - when I select the reboot option, it never reboots and I have to do it manually. After the reboot, when I check the reg files they have been compacted, but there is a bunch of tmp files left behind in the folders.

I run Vista Home Premium.

Reg cleaner doesn't seem to remember hidden items -- the keep reappearing.

Not sure if this is a jv16 issue, but as I believe it to be registry-related: On a Vista Ultimate machine, control panel in classic view does NOT display the control panel icon, but rather the windows default (aka "no idea what this file is") icon. Category view is unaffected, but the startmenu mouseover control panel is.

Multiple lines include the count of certain Office items (trivial bug, harms nothing). There is a similar count duplication in the Ad-Aware lines.

Question: Do the check boxes in the "Show data" window indicate that selective clearing might be a feature in the future? :)

Window Focus - Still has the focus problem where a window steals the focus from the window you're using.

ie. the Main Window pops up over the Reg Cleaner Window during a scan.

This only happened to me once, so it's not a big problem. It never happened in RC1 to me.

Yes. Several CPU intensive PT tools/tasks either:
1. Steal the focus egregiously (for example, File Organizer Apply with a few hundred files), or

2. Don't let other PT windows get a reasonably frequent chance (for example, Backup Tool building a Custom Restore list of 2000+ files) …

I think "Other"tab in Backup Tool is for the files deleted in the "Other" tab of the File Cleaner(?)

Yes -- it is not picking up the last (or only) file. It is just a "Show data" bug -- "Clear" removes (and backs up) all the files counted …

In this example, the omitted item is Where.xls, as shown in the win explorer window.
