As you are aware, over time the UserAssist Count Keys can accumulate thousands of encrypted entries, which are of no use, and occupy a great deal of space. The two Keys are:
•HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ UserAssist\ {5E6AB780-7743-11CF-A12B-00AA004AE837}\ Count
•HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ UserAssist\ {75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}\ Count
JV16 PT 2006 Registry Cleaner Aggressive scan does a great job identifying these entries as; useless registry entry, and provides for their removal. However; rather then allowing these entries to be made, and then having to delete them, the user can disable the logging by creating a new registry key and value as follows:
Right click the UserAssist key and choose New>Key
Name the new key Settings.
Highlight the Settings key and in the right hand pane, right click a blank area and choose New>Dword value.
Name it NoLog then double click it and enter a value of 1. The effect will take place after you reboot your computer.
This is time consuming and many users may be reluctant to directly tamper with the registry, so as an alternative to manual editing of the registry, I would prefer to see the following added to JV16 PT 2007:
•Add a Tab or Option to Registry Cleaner or Registry Manager to Disable/Enable Count Key Logging.
This would provide the user with a one click option to permit or prevent continued logging.
