Hi, when i try to compact the user registry hives (ntuser.dat and usrclass.dat) on Windows 7 32 bits, i always get this:

Error: Failed to open the hive, Windows returned error code: 2

jv16PT b1173 registry compaction is a TWO phase process for W7.

These user registry hives are compacted in Phase II of the Registry Compactor run, this Phase II runs during the W7 restart that follows compaction Phase I.

Hi, thanks, for your answer. The problem is that there´s no phase II, there is no reboot.

As the last line in your log file say's:

19.12.2012 14 - All done! Press Enter to continue.

After pressing 'Enter' W7 restarts and executes Phase II.

Indeed there's no new reboot after pressing "Enter to continue". Windows just starts, that's the correct process, but you should see a message (window) about further compaction of the remaining hives.

I am afraid Leonardo was wrong about this new reboot: there's just ONE reboot after starting the tool and after rebooting in the DOS-like window you have to "Enter to continue" and then Windows starts, buts as I wrote, you must see another small window about further compaction.

This is the first time i use registry compactor on windows 7.

I tried disabling antivirus and even in safe mode with no success.

Windows starting normally is the correct process after pressing "Enter to continue". The DOS-like window for Phase II doesn't appear immediately but at the end of the Windows starting process, but normally it DOES appear.

Well, I don't know why but for me it doesn't appear and it does not compact the hives. I also tried reinstalling jv16 with no success.

I am trying to compact only the user hives ntuser.dat and UsrClass.dat, maybe this is the reason why this is happening?

Can anybody do the same thing and see what happends?

Last suggestion:

Fully (everything) uninstall jv16PT2012v1173 and delete the old installation folder, including leftovers.

After that re-boot W7 and reinstall jv16PT2012 in a new folder. Try again the registry compactor!

Hi, I prefer not to touch the HKLM hives until I know everything works fine for the user hives.

Does anyone who uses registry compactor regularly verify what happends when you just select the user hives to compact?

I have Windows 8 64 bit installed on my system. I'm afraid the tool Registry Compactor of jv16 PowerTools 2012 doesn't work properly with Win8. I am waiting for jv16 PowerTools 2013 for testing.

Hi, after a clean installation of jv16 still the same problem.

I tried to compact the other user hives (default, LocalService and Networkservice) with succes for the last ones,

for the DEFAULT hive i got this:

20.12.2012 12 - Compacted size: 176,00 KB (Compression: 65,63%)

20.12.2012 12 - Error: Too large compression! Skipping hive for safety...

But for my user hives no compaction and no phaseII window.

It doesn't also appear in Windows Vista.

If you want to run the phase II in this system you must click on an icon in the tray.

The problem is maybe here (UAC - User Account Control)?
