I suspect the former does the ignore check after tabulating all the data while the latter does it before doing all that processing. If so, perhaps the placement of the History Cleaner global ignore check should be changed.

I haven't worked on the ignore list functionality myself, but looking at the code, both ignore lists seem to be checked at roughly the same place (i.e., when a new item is to be added to the results listing). The global ignore list handler seems pretty optimized to me, so it's hard to say why it would be so much slower, but I'll inform Jouni about this.

OK. I'll test the two ignore methods a few more times to see if the difference is consistently repeatable.

Using both ignore methods

Test 1: elapsed time ~5 seconds. Result = no Sun Java line in list.

Test 2: elapsed time ~5 seconds. Result = no Sun Java line in list.

Using only the "Never show" method

Test 3: elapsed time ~6 seconds. Result = no Sun Java line in list.

Test 4: elapsed time ~6 seconds. Result = no Sun Java line in list.

Using only the global ignore method

Test 5: elapsed time ~1 hour and 6 minutes. Result = no Sun Java line in list.

Using neither ignore method

Test 6: Progress indicator similar to that in Test 5; cancelled after a few minutes. In prior tests, there was a Sun Java line in the list when not ignoring java.

Notes:

Each test done in a separate session with History Cleaner the only task used.

There were ~9,600 files in the java cache subdirectories during the tests.

In Test 5, Task Manager Resource Monitor showed jv16PT use of the NTFS master in only the first few seconds. All the rest of the elapsed time had no jv16PT disk activity, but jv16PT used 40 to 50% cpu the whole time.

The attached debug log is from Test 5.

If I manually delete all but ~500 of the java cache files, then Test 5 completes in about 10 seconds

Likely conclusions:

With the "Never show" method, the file names are not placed in a table for "Show data" purposes.

With the global ignore method, or when not ignoring, the file names are placed in a table. I speculate that an inefficient sort of the table might account for the excessive elapsed time.

On my PC counter function doesn't work. After I've used History cleaner tool. After a couple of errors the tool gains access to the system and cleans the data the counter doesn't show how many temp or any other files i have deleted. Also the massive rename tool starts to hang when i press cancel? It disappears and doesn't revert back the program window. It's still listed in the processes. I have to terminate or restart the process to access the program. It happens every time!

We are working to fix the remaining bugs reported in this thread. Beta4 will be out when they're fixed.

Can you specify which counter you mean? I don't think the message at the bottom of the main window is supposed to list changes made with the History Cleaner, since the items you can delete using that tool are not really considered errors or temp files.

This has already been reported in this thread and has been fixed for Beta4.

XP-SP3: jv16-2012-beta3 'Registry Finder' is functioning correctly!

W7-SP1-x86: jv16-2012-beta3 'Registry Finder' does not function correctly anymore after beta2.

I have installed Java JRE v7 Update-3.

W7-SP1-x86: 'Registry Finder' in jv16-2012-beta2 and jv16-2011-b1053 both find 10 relevant items after a search with keyword '1.7.0_03'.

W7-SP1-x86: 'Registry Finder' in jv16-2012-beta3 finds a huge varying number (128.000 till 280.000) of not relevant items. :(

Almost 4 weeks and no response of the company?

The conclusion could be either the company is dead, which I don't hope, or the project got stuck in a dead end?

An update of the progress every few days would be fine or does anyone know what the problems could be?

Indeed, I only have a look every week now as updates are so infrequent. The only signs of live have been e-mails on donating which were a bit odd as most on the contact list must already have paid for the product

Please accept my apologies for the quietness on our part! We have been working on the final touches to PT 2012 RC1, which is just about ready now. I am also working on a little tool which should make updating language translations a little bit easier.

Confirmed, I have informed Jouni of this bug.

I've finished the translation updater tool now, it will accept the new English language file and an older translated language file as input. It will then list all new strings that need to be translated. The translation can be done right in the program or just dumped to a file for translating with your preferred text editor.
