Why would not the "Explore" option show up on selected installed programs such as the one below?

Because the Explore option is not available if a) no installation directory is detected, or b) an installation directory is detected but it's invalid (i.e. non-existing).

But this must now been the second time someone asks about this so I must say it's a bit misleading and looks like a bug, so I have changed the feature in a way Explore button is always visible when an installation directory is detected and for non-existing directories the closes existing directory is opened. This way it works as in the Registry Cleaner.

Let me explain the concept of "closes existing directory is opened": If a software is analyzed to be installed to c:\program files\adobe\photoshop\ and user selects Explore. If the dir exists it is opened. But if it doesn't, the PowerTools will first check if c:\program files\adobe\ exists, if it does, it is opened, if not, then c:\program files\ etc.

So this improvement will be available in the next released version (RC1), thank you for reporting the issue!

Registry Finder - search by owner on Vista BE (not SP1) More here . . .

Set to "Look only for registry keys which do not have any owner," I got this result:

Lines when searching only (five separate scans):

HKCR = 11606

HKCU = 15

HKLM = 12057

HKUS = 0

HKCC = 0

Total = 23678

Lines when searching all five at the same time:

HKCR = 10208

HKCU = 15

HKLM = 3731

HKUS = 0

HKCC = 0

Total = 13954

I would say the feature is not working correctly.

Doing a spot check with RegEdit Permissions showed these owners for most of those examined:

The check marks are not remembered in the last run preference. They are remembered in a named preference.

Also, it is possible to check both boxes. They should be mutually exclusive.

I don't know if this is the kind of thing you want to know about or not, but for the first time I had difficulty downloading BETA 4 using IE 6 running on Windows XP. Each time I tried I received the standard error dialog reading "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I tried three times using the link in the message received for BETA 4, then switched to my Safari browser and had no problem at all downloading it and saving it to HD after pasting the link into the address window. I then pasted it into IE (rather than use the link) and successfully downloaded it again so whatever the problem was, it only occurred using the link in your message.

Maybe not what you are looking for, but I thought I'd let you know before you think I'm not doing anything at all. :-(

Same issue as fieldoxide. I've included the message board in the the screenshot so you can see the effect of trying to fix/delete - ziltch. Same outcome if one goes to the registry entry and tries to fix. OS is Vista running with the beta of SP2. Forgive my ignorance but is it a Vista issue or a jv16 issue?

1) The Tooltips for Service Manager and System Optimizer are missing

When holding the mouse pointer on those tools in the Main Menu of the PowerTools, no tooltip is popping up.

2) In the English.lng file > > 2_7F1:

"Deep Analysis adds one more pass of analyzis ..." should be

"Deep Analysis adds one more pass of analysis ..."

3) In the same English.lng file > > 23:

"Remember that the health gauges show the scores after each new run of the Quick System Analysis and thus do not show the actual status of your PC and Registry unless you run the Quick System Analysis from the File menu."

It seems to me the part of the sentence in red is superfluous and could be removed if the word "always" is added between "not" and "show". So the new sentence runs as follows:

"Remember that the health gauges show the scores after each new run of the Quick System Analysis and thus do not always show the actual status of your PC and Registry."

During a spot check, I noticed the following string among the owners and groups shown in a RegEdit Permissions window:

Is there a way to find just such keys?

This "search by owner" box found nothing:

Yes, both are missing with the main window mouse-over.

Also, in the tool message box, after deleting Tips.dat, I get a tip for System Optimizer, but not for Service Manager. Perhaps Service Manager doesn't need one …

This sounds more like a problem with the Internet Explorer than with our site or jv16 PowerTools. But thanks for reporting any way!

I also am getting similar UserAssist items repeatedly.

Removal also fails to happen for the very same items with the raw list.

They can be removed with PT2008.

The PT2008 "File reference scan" picks up errors in the key shown below. PT2009 beta4 does not.
