Here is the Beta 4 of jv16 PowerTools 2009:

Warning:

Do not install this beta version over any existing version but to a new directory. Also, do not uninstall any previous versions of jv16 PowerTools before the installation of this version - this version is a beta version. Beta version means the new product version is not yet finished and is only released for testing purposes in order to find the last remaining problems.

Do not start to translate this version to your language yet, there will be more changes to the language interface.

Main changes since Beta 3:

* Fixed a minor GUI issue from Registry Find & Replace

* Fixed a bug from Registry Compactor that caused invalid hives to be listed on some systems

* Fixed few more bugs from the Automation Tool (hopefully the very last ones)

* Fixed a bug that caused the Service Manager to to remember its window size

* Improved the GUI of the Registry Compactor a little bit

* Improved the Message Box feature in a way you can now vertically resize the windows, if you want to

* Fixed a bug from the Message Box feature that caused the text inside the box to become corrupted in some cases

* Added a support for double clicking an item in the new Registry Cleaner (double clicking opens the specific item's registry key in RegEdit)

* Fixed a bug that caused the Open In RegEdit feature of many tools not to work under certain Vista configurations

* Improved the GUI by replacing the few remaining tabs by the new image tab control

* Fixed a bug from the old Registry Cleaner GUI (raw list mode) that caused the tool not to create a backup when using the Custom Fix feature

* Fixed few remaining bugs from the System Optimizer

* Fixed a bug from the Automation Tool, when you delete an automation task with the Automation Tool the bug caused it not to delete the shortcuts (e.g. from Desktop) pointing to the task, instead these shortcuts were left behind

* Improved the way the tool tips are shown in the main window, previously there was just one long line for the tool tip, now it uses a multi lined text box

* Made minor improvements to the Custom Restore / Edit backup feature

* Fixed a bug that caused the progress bar not to work in the Software Manager's Custom Uninstall feature

* Improved the safety of the Software Manager

* Improved the filtering of the software names of the Software Manager, this means the tool no longer lists some items that are clearly not software products but for example components

Release notes:

* The new and improved Scan Report is not available yet.

* The Mouse Gestures do not yet work perfectly.

* The next released version will be the RC1 with all the new features fully implemented and ready to be translated.

As always, all beta testers who give us valuable feedback such as good quality bug reports or other feedback will be given a free personal license for the product when then final product version is released. To be clear, simply downloading the beta version and saying "it works fine" or "it doesn't work" doesn't entitle for a free license.

Still happening the same on XP (SP3).

When I click "Open in Regedit" over any registry entry (at startup manager, registry cleaner....), regedit.exe do open, but it don't lead you to the desired key.

If I change the registry editor (registry workshop, for example), it works good.

It only happens in windows xp regedit.exe (in my case). I haven't tested it in Vista.

If the user just selects the Netscape Navigator line and clicks Uninstall, the program also removes the Microsoft Office keys shown at the reference.

Well, now it deletes the files (without backup, by design :( ). There is a small new problem: whether you set it up to "Automatically close PT" or not, the tool window stays up and you have to close it, and the main window which then appears, manually.

"Delete files from directories including their subdirectories…" now deletes the files. However, the jv16PT.exe process does not "automatically terminate" -- you have to kill it.

I apologize if any of these have already been identified:

* Registry Manager: the letter 'i' in 'With' in the Open With menu icon title is capitalized - it should be lower-case.

* System Tools: the letter 't' in 'Tool' in the Start Menu Tool icon title is lower-case - it should be capitalized.

* Main Toolbar - Tools: the letter 't' in 'Tool' in Start Menu Tool is lower-case - it should be capitalized.

* Main Toolbar - Tools - Add shortcut to Desktop: the letter 't' in 'Tool' in Start Menu Tool is lower-case - it should be capitalized.

* Main Toolbar - File: the letter 't' in 'Tool' in Backup Tool is lower-case - it should be capitalized for consistency with other references to tools.

* On initial start of Beta 4, the interface was 'confused' - File Tools icons ended up in the Registry Tools screen, Windows disappeared momentarily and reappeared, the Tips windows were visible when the associated main windows were not. This series of events lasted about 10-15 seconds, then the program behaved normally. I suspect no one will be able to reproduce this anomaly.

* Settings: again, the interface seemed momentarily 'confused' and slow - when clicking different buttons on the toolbar, the reaction was extremely slow and the Settings section was very slow to close. Again, this lasted only a few seconds and has not happened since (at least this evening).

System Optimizer - cannot change a pre-set tweak

If a tweak setting has already been "applied" through some method before PT2009 is even installed, it is recognized as applied the first time you run the System Optimizer tool.

However, in this case, the System Optimizer cannot "unapply" the tweak. If you try, you get an error message because an internal backup file does not exist. To get rid of the tweak, you must change it with regedit or some other non-PT means.

Apparently, the SO tool assumes all applied tweaks were done by it.

These Perflib entries shouldn't be listed as errors. They are listed in Beta4 because of some debug code left to the Registry Cleaner Engine, this problem will be fixed in the next version.

Fixed? The key is still there, but no longer shows as an error …

The keys with incorrect permission (or incorrect owner, to be exact) are not shown with the Raw list mode of the Registry Cleaner, only with the Structured view.

The way I understand the problem: Sometimes when a new window of PowerTools is opened (e.g. Settings) the window automatically opens up too up and in the case the Windows task bar is moved to up (instead the normal bottom of the screen) the very top of the PT's window can be hidden by the Windows task bar. The problem was fixed in a way PT's windows cannot any longer be shown initially too high up.

In other words, you still can move the PT's Window manually too high, but you shouldn't be able to do this by modifying Windows.dat under \Settings\ (which stores the saved positions of Windows).

This is correct, the System Optimizer cannot change pre-set tweaks because it cannot know the previous value. But I think I should change the way it works that instead of the current error message the feature should instead use the Windows default value...

This series of events lasted about 10-15 seconds, then the program behaved normally. I suspect no one will be able to reproduce this anomaly.

* Settings: again, the interface seemed momentarily 'confused' and slow - when clicking different buttons on the toolbar, the reaction was extremely slow and the Settings section was very slow to close. Again, this lasted only a few seconds and has not happened since (at least this evening).

Can anyone else reproduce / confirm these GUI problems?

Since different administrative users on the same machine can have different desktop configurations, I reproduced the problem as follows:

1. As a user with a right side, wide, auto-hidden task bar, I had placed the main window and Settings window up high.

2. To pretend I would be the other user, I exited PT, then placed the task bar (not hidden, not tall) at the top.

3. Pretending I was the other user, I started PT and clicked the Settings icon. The task bar covered the title bar of both the PT windows.

I will never run normally with the task bar at the top, so this will not be a problem for me.

With a clean install of beta4, maybe it won't be a problem for member zhackwyatt, who reported the issue.

Yes, I have "Hide Windows system files" and "Show only applications (.exe)" unchecked. "Startup folder and basic registry items" is selected.

NOTE: If I select "All starting applications and libraries", NvCpl.dll, Display.exe, and iaanotif.exe do NOT show up in this list either. These programs are in fact running in memory and are started up on system startup.
