I unchecked the six tweaks mentioned earlier (1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, and 2-4), then clicked the Apply button, and exited PT2009. When I immediately again start PT2009 and the System Optimizer tool, the six tweaks are still checked.

Added note: after additional testing, I came to realize the program is setting the check marks from the registry settings, not from any PT file.

They are still checked after a system restart.

However, if I restore the registry with ERDNT.EXE and then restart, the System Optimizer checkmarks are back to their original state (only the 1-1 tweak is checked).

So it seems there is a rather serious set of bugs in the System Optimizer. For example, its "undo" capability is suspect.

It looks like the program is putting the tweaked value in the backup, not the "untweaked" value.

Also some of the keys being tweaked do not exist in my registry, so correct backups for those keys have to be created using a priori knowledge. Apparently the program has that a priori knowledge (in SystemOptimizer.xdat?), since a couple of such keys were in the (so-called) backup.

Services Manager

I disabled the Computer Browser service, which had a startup type of Automatic.

When I later enabled the service, the startup type showed as Manual.

However, that is not a bug since you can change the startup type with the selected line's context menu.

After you exit PT2009, it does not remember any resizing you did to the Services Manager list window. That is a bug.

I did also a test for the Performance Tweaks.

I checked or unchecked the "tweaks" whose registry entries I know, i.e.

- disable NTFS last stamp

- disable DOS 8.3 name creation for files

- force windows core to RAM

- improve DNS caching

Well, unforunately it does not work: the registry entries remain always the same despite checking or unchecking the checkboxes and in spite of rebooting.

So Tullik, you're right.

It's a pity, jv16, you're still not ready for beta3 or RC1 :

Nevertheless, those tweaks can be done: in other programs they work fine :

I applied these tweaks and restarted: 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, and 2-4. I did 1-1 alone, then later did the other five all at the same time.

There was no 1-1 subfolder in …\Backups\_SystemOptimizer.

In the other five subfolders, the values in the Entries.reg files equaled the values in the registry. How could this be right?

This bug should now be fixed. I say "should" because I wasn't able to reproduce the problem but I found something that could cause a problem as described. Thank you for reporting!

The Registry Compactor is not showing all the hives for 64bit. The same problem existings in PT 2008.

I cannot reproduce the problem.

Just now, I did it several times while looking at Columns.dat. It remembers the columns OK, which at first confused me.

In further testing, I looked at Windows.dat. The bug is in the window size remembering. You can see this rather conclusively if you maximize the window before exiting PT.

From Windows.dat after maximizing the Service Manager window and exiting PT2009:

System Optimizer

I backed up my registry with Lars Hederer's program, then did this test:

System Optimizer showed none of the 22 tweaks checked, so I checked them all and clicked Apply.

I got this message box:: Internal Error SOF-1-1-1 (2-10 tweak?)

In the System Optimizer window, all the tweaks except 2-10, 2-11, and 3-1 remained checked (even, as expected, after starting PT again). I suppose the 3 errors refer to those 3 tweaks -- I added the parenthetical expressions.

I then examined …\Backups\_SystemOptimizer. All the tweaks, except 2-11, had a subfolder. This an extraction from all the Entries.reg files in …\Backups\_SystemOptimizer:

System Optimizer

Before doing the registry restore mentioned above, I unchecked all the checked tweaks and clicked Apply.

Tweaks 1-4, 1-5, 1-6, 2-1, 2-3, 2-5, 2-6, 2-7, 2-8, 2-9, 2-20, and 3-2 then showed as checked.

All the …\Backups\_SystemOptimizer subfolders except 1-8, 1-9, and 3-2 were gone. The 1-8 and 3-2 subfolders were still empty.

It appears my earlier statement is correct:

I repeated all the tests above, in smaller increments. The backup and error message situation was the same, just not all at once. This time, I checked the registry to see what PT2009 changed.

The 1-9 change PT made is clearly wrong. The other six are probably OK, although the 1-3 value is not intuitive like the others.

Most of the rest changed something since the boxes stayed checked. However, since they created no backup, it is not possible to find what keys changed just using information from PT2009 files.
