jv16 PowerTools 2008 Beta2 released

The Beta2 is now out:

(If the link doesn't work it means the testing for this version has already ended)

Do not install this beta version over any existing version but to a new directory. Also, do not uninstall any previous versions of jv16 PowerTools before the installation of this version - this version is a beta version. Beta version means the new product version is not yet finished and is only released for testing purposes in order to find the last remaining problems.

Do not start to translate this version to your language yet, there will be more changes to the language interface.

This version should fix all the main problems of the Beta1.

As always, all beta testers who give us valuable feedback such as good quality bug reports will be given a free personal license for the product when then final product version is released. To be clear, simply downloading the beta version and saying "it works fine" or "it doesn't work" doesn't entitle for a free license.

For some reason, everytime I start this version it goes into the tutorial and then after going through that it takes 10 minutes to reevaluate my system. If I go into settings and change a setting and it wants to be restarted, it goes into the tutorial and reevalutates the system again taking about 10 minutes.

I also notice that the preferences, backups, etc defaulted to C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temp\jv16PT_2008Preferences and C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temp\jv16PT_2008 (this folder contains a subfolder called preferences and a lot of dat files.)

Unfortunately everytime my computer is restarted the "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temp" has all its contents deleted so I would lose anything that was previously done. This is common with programs such as ccleaner and privacy eraser.

When I run registry compactor I receive an error "internal error MIOTC-1" and a note in a box that this feature is only for NT based systems. I am running Win XP SP2.

Installed as directed.

During installed received following error windows:

1) MainForm TrEndTimer AntiCrack-1 triggered!

2) xForms AntiCrack-2 triggered!

Selected OK and installed fine without hitch.

I like the new graphic/GUI

Health guage reversed from anticipated: tachometer goes to red (danger) when dial goes clockwise as does pressure guages etc. Current guages rotate counter-clockwise.

Beta2 faster than previous.

Reg cleaner found high: 137 / Med 614 and low 1472 - fixed without hitch.

Startup Manager - Age column bugs

1. When the list is populated, all the items are marked Yes (not New, not Old).

2. When one left clicks a Yes line, one can only change it to New. To make it Old, one must do the left click operation again.

3. When one closes the tool window after changing some lines to Old and some to New, the changes are lost. The lines are back to Yes when one uses the tool again.

Confirmed. Both things happen with v 1.8.0.435 on my Vista BE system. They do not happen using beta 1 (v1.8.0.433).

Generating the software list Startup Manager freezes at 3/4 of the progress bar.

No reaction doing "Abort" - only "Close" is closing the feature.

File Recovery tool observations

1. The tool window goes away right after I click start and the results window appears.

2. Undelete button only produces a "Not yet present in this beta version" pop-up.

3. When I first scanned C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\, only file In.lnk showed on the list -- that file already exists on the Desktop.

4. I created several rtf files on the Desktop, placed copies in a desktop subfolder, then permanently deleted the files. When I ran the tool several times, what it listed was inconsistent.

"Quick" System Analysis doesn't complete after a "few" minutes

Progress bar stops after 90% and analysis doesn't go further on.

Have to abort the whole thing.

Unfortunately this aborts the cache building too.

As I wrote already before: I'd whish the programmer abandons this "quick" analysis. It should be removed from the program.

In any case it should be separated from the cache building.!!!

Main window context menu

There is no longer a context menu when you right click a neutral area in the body of the main window.

This is true for all three of the main window tool show options.

Residual list window smudge

Sometimes, the rolling counters in the upper right corner are not completely cleared when a scan completes. See below.

Dragging, resizing, or restoring the window clears the smudge.

Also, sometimes the progress indicator & Abort button remains on the completed list window. The Abort button is no longer active.

Registry Finder runs too long?

The scan on Vista BE in the prior post took over 12 minutes. It takes less than 2 minutes with PT2007 v 1.7.0.416 (and v 1.7 0422).

I only mention this again because a news item in Macecraft's main site says "Highly enhanced registry scanning speed, searching the registry with Registry Finder or running the Registry Cleaner is a lot faster than with PT 2007."

However, the PT2007 scans (both versions) only found 1 item. Perhaps the new engine searches more of the registry … ? :?

Is the defrag still on the to do list for power tools or has it been dropped???

This is true, the restart message is shown mainly for "just to be sure" all new settings are applied.

Here is a report of bugs confirmed and/or fixed since the last report. All these fixes are included in the next released beta versions.

Problem: The Never Show Again of the Registry Cleaner (with structured list) doesn't work

Status: Not confirmed. However, I disabled the use of custom fonts of the Message Windows if NT4 is detected. This should solve the problem pretty smoothly.

Problem: The new Startup Manager doesn't support the Age and/or Commenting features.
