OMG!! You won't believe what the problem is! When I look at columns.dat with Notepad++ the contents never change from what I posted. But if I use the regular Notepad editor, the contents are completely different, like so;

Now these numbers make sense . . .

The funny thing is, I restarted Windows before and Notepad++ is STILL showing the same thing as it was originally. But where is that stored? I have some lookin' to do . . .

UPDATE: if fixed the problem by setting the compatibility for Notepad++ to "Run as administrator". Don't know why that should make a difference, but . . .

Such flaws (false postives) are almost always up to the antivirus people to fix ... I'd guess that jv has already contacted Avast! ...

But maybe v.1.7.0.404 is actually infected ... ? I doubt that.

Registry Cleaner, Structured list, Scan Report statistics

The Parameters column is sorted, which makes it difficult to make quick sense of the numbers. For example, didn't it used to show "Grand total" after the "detected" counts?

NOD32 doesn't pick up anything wrong with jv16PT on my system.

The "Advisory" now has updates for testing done so far today ...

I just sent a mail to ALWIL Software, just in the case that Jouni couldn't do that. All the other scanners flag the program as 'clean', well, at least those ones which can jump over avast! access restrictions imposed over the executable.

In both my XP Pro and Vista systems, the above exposure seems to be fixed. Every file that was not in the backup had a "Failed to access" message.

The Vista test uncovered a small bug. A few files that were backed up and removed also had a "Failed to access" message.

So this is a false message bug (relatively harmless).

Well, I got a new computer and I thought it would be a good opportunity to change the SO as well. Old Win98 SE is still chuggin along in the old computer in another room.

I think the cause quite likely lies in the daily automatic update done by Avast! ...

Running Registry cleaner from the desktop via automation tool, pops up for a second then exists.

Also backups created by the registry cleaner via automation, can be deleted without are you sure confirmation (as opposed to ones created directly throw the manual registry cleaner).

I couldn't reproduce it using XP or Vista. Must be one of those pesky "intermittent" things ...
