A new version of jv16 PowerTools 2007 is now released, you can download it from:

(if the link doesn't work, it means the beta testing for this version has already ended)

The new version contains quite many changes, including a brand new GUI. Even with all the new eye candy, the program actually starts faster than the previous version! But this version also contains many rather major improvements and bug fixes to the registry cleaner engine, so please be careful with it. Due to the very large number of changes this version was be first released as a beta version.

On Beta Testing

All beta testers who submit valuable feedback, such as bug reports, performance reports, improvement ideas etc, will receive a free personal license for the product after it has been officially released. Simply installing and testing the application doesn't mean that you would automatically receive a free license, free licenses are issued only to those who submit valuable feedback.

General Release Notes

* The new More Function menus of File Tool and Directory Tool doesn't yet translate. This is a problem in the program, there is no need to update the translations.

* You can minimize windows too much at the moment, this is a known problem.

* The tab control isn't currently very easy to use with windows with many tabs, such as the Settings window. This will be fixed before the final release.

Transparency Effect

Title is greyed out and the button doesn't work for me. I have Vista Home Premium, Aero, and a 7800 GTX so I should be able to handle transparency . . .

Even setting Trans=1 and TransPerCent=50 in interface.dat, makes no difference in interface transparency or the setting buttons for it on the Settings page.

Column Sizes

STILL don't get saved! :

Reg Cleaner

DOES seem to pick up a few things it didn't before. And that's good!:

But it isn't finding anything in HKEY_USERS. I have at least 10 Invalid Path/File errors that Reg Cleaner should be picking up but isn't.

It still seems to take a long time for the progress bar to get from 3/4 to full. This wouldn't really bother me too much if it did a thorough job.

Backup Location

Reverts to the default after installing new version over previous. I keep my backups stored on another drive so that they don't get lost if I need to do a Restore Image with Acronis TrueImage. Other settings remain after an Install Over, so why not this one?

Yes it is, select the "Case insensitive wildcard search" as the search method. The syntax is simple: put your search words inside ""'s and the operators between.

For example:

"Windows" AND "vista"

"Window?" AND NOT "NT"

"Windows" OR "vista"

You can include wildcards to the search strings as well.

Previously I tried perl strings (as described here)

I now tried:

1. "DosDevices" AND "PRN"

2. "DosDevices" AND NOT "PRN"

Using 1, nothing showed.

Using 2, everything with DosDevices showed, including the three items with PRN as the entry name.

Back to the "drawing board" … :

Added: These two strings used at the same time also caused everything with DosDevices to show:

"DosDevices" AND NOT ":"

"DosDevices" AND NOT "LPT1"

These two strings used at the same time appeared to work (the three AUX (COM1) items did not show:

"DosDevices" AND ":"

"DosDevices" AND "LPT1"

The added tests (in my prior post) indicate that, even in the same source, AND works but AND NOT does not work … but see below …

Using just "DosDevices AND "COM1" caused only those three lines to show.

Using just "DosDevices" AND NOT "COM1" caused everything except the COM1 items to show (AND NOT worked), but it did not work when used with a second statement ("DosDevices" AND NOT ":") at the same time (everything showed).

Perhaps only one statement at a time is supported?

If so, is nesting using parentheses supported?

Confirmed -- on my XP Pro system, I ran 401 followed immediately by 399.

401 found 115 items, but none were in HKUS ...

399 found only 22 items, but 16 were in HKUS (found during the file reference scan) ...

The browse features don't update the path strings -- you have to edit them with mouse & keyboard actions.

Only license holders or newcomers can participate in the v.1.7.0.401 beta test -- when installed to a directory which does not contain a license, it comes up with the trial period expired message ...

New GUI -- minimize widget feature

Even though it currently minimizes "too much," as jv said, I still think the feature on the tool windows is a welcome change ...

Good catch, this will be fixed in the next version.

Yes, of course ... I was just thinking about former beta testers who may not yet have purchased a license.

It's not a problem for me -- although I always first install a new release into an empty directory, when I get such a message, I just put a copy of my license in the directory.

That is correct, the syntax is:

"search word1" operator "search word2" operator "searchword 3" etc.

So "Foo" AND NOT "bar" AND NOT "foobar" works,

"Foo" AND NOT "bar" "foobar" doesn't.

I have now fixed some bugs from the boolean search engine and everything should work in the next released version.
