Well, is this a report or feedback about betatesting jv16 PowerTools 2007 RC2?

If not, then it's not the right place to post that (rather long) post.

I'm afraid it's not possible to send Word attachments to this forum. Besides, why should you do that?

Registry Cleaner tool - List setting bug

jv, per additional tests:

1. When you launch PT 2007 RC2 jv16PT.exe and click the Registry Cleaner icon for the first time, Structured=False is correctly recognized

2. It is only when you exit the tool, then, from the same main window, relaunch it, that "Structured list" is always selected whether Structured=False or Structured=True

3. Workarounds:
a. Don't exit the tool and relaunch it during the same main window session without double checking the "Results format" tab …

b. Or, always load a saved preference before starting Registry Cleaner …

Note: a later test showed the radio buttons in the Mode tab act the same way … fortunately, the Normal mode is almost always what one wants …

Registry Cleaner, Abort bug? (Vista)

When you "Start" Registry Cleaner, then click "Abort," you get the "Operation aborted" message. You also get the rest of the "scan finished" messages and can not "Start" the tool again until they all appear, because you get the "already running, please wait" message in the tool window's message box.

If, after clicking "Abort," you then click "Close" on the results window, the results window goes away, as you expect. When you then click "Start" on the tool window, you get the "already running, please wait" message. After a while, a message box flashes briefly on the screen (probably from the aborted and closed results window). Then you can "Start" the tool.

Is this normal behavior when shutting down the threads, or a bug?

Added note: the same sort of thing happens when you just "Close" the results windows, then try to "Start" the tool again …

RC3 update

Partially fixed in RC3 -- it still happens with "Abort" -- it no longer happens with "Close" …

v.1.7.0.388 update

Partially fixed some more -- the "scan finished" messages no longer appear, but the tool continues its scanning ...

v.1.7.0.407 update

May be fixed -- the tool continues to use about 50% cpu for a minute or two, maybe more. Most is kernel usage, so maybe it just takes a while to free handles or whatever.

Or is it possible that RC still has threads doing windows APIs, but is ignoring the responses because of the user abort request? Jv, please answer -- thanks!

Registry Cleaner, initial focus switching problem (Vista)

The first time you start Registry Cleaner after launching a PowerTools session, there is a considerable delay before you can switch to other PT windows (including to the main window) with a mouse click. Switching to windows other than PT, or to the desktop (*), is not a problem ...

If, in the same PT session, you later start Registry Cleaner again, there is no longer a focus switching problem for the PT windows ...

(*) Except you can't see much of the desktop because of all the "not responding" PT windows ... : -- a workaround: click "Show desktop" in Quick Launch, if you have it there … :

Added note: perhaps a definition of "considerable delay" is appropriate -- it is only seconds (varies some, from about 15 to 45) -- the main symptom is many of the "clicked on" PT windows enter a "not responding" state and lose focus for that time ... it takes several clicks on different windows to see a "worst case" ...

Added question: Is it likely that this initial delay is mostly due to acquistion of PT's working set … ?

Registry Finder and double backslashes (Vista)

This does not report a bug. It is only for information and consideration purposes.

* My Vista registry contains some entries with double backslashes that clearly (?) seem to be errors (see screenshot)

* Other \\ entries that were not such "obvious" errors were excluded from the Registry Finder list

* Since there are no problems on my system which these apparent errors might cause, I intend to do nothing about them (at least for now)
* Either the entries are not being used (yet?) by anything,

* or the errors are corrected on-the-fly by whatever may use them …

* or … ?

* or all of the above

* Correcting \\ errors is a can of worms -- we shouldn't expect PT2007 Registry Cleaner to fix (maybe PT2010 ... : )

Added note: additional testing showed that windows itself, in both Vista and XP, strips out or ignores on-the-fly, the extraneous backslashes in paths (tested for "Run" in the Start menu and shortcuts; not tested for batch jobs) -- so in the screenshot, only the single http entry is a real error (\ should be /).

Note: Adventurous users can use multiple Registry Find & Replace sessions to "correct" these entries with reasonable ease and safety (since you can get a single backup for similar items without doing the multiple exports that using regedit would require).

History/MRU Cleaner, some permissions inadequate (Vista)

Permissions for some files in the results list (indirectly) do not allow backup or removal (example below).

Is there a way to exclude such files from the History/MRU Cleaner results list?

Example: a History/MRU Cleaner line for "IIS > Log files > 15" includes five files shown below. Only "System" has full control for the subdirectory "C:\Windows\system32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup" -- so backup probably failed due to denial of access. Permissions for the files themselves can not even be viewed without taking over ownership, with possible unknown consequences (per a warning in the properties change dialogue).

History/MRU Cleaner, unadvised backup (Vista)

About a dozen files "Failed to remove" because "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." These files were backed up (which is not a real good idea for an open file -- a later restore could wipe out changes ...).

Is there a way to exclude such files from the History/MRU Cleaner (*) backup and remove actions?

(*) The question also applies to other tools which backup and remove files …

When you click the "Replace" button, there is no completion acknowledgement. The results window and its message box simply go away …

Backup Tool (Vista)

When you launch the tool (or refresh it), it is so busy going through the Backups folder that it hogs the focus, and other PT windows can't respond to a mouse click for a while ...

That was not after, but during the first time you start Registry Cleaner after launching jv16PT.exe ...

I'll double check on my laptop ... yep, it happens there too (XP Pro) -- but doesn't last as long ...

Maybe that's because Vista is running 50% more processes and (gasp) about 75 Services (there are just less than 55 services running on the XP machine).

Here are the results of bug fixing of the RC2 done since the last report. Notice that the Reported by field means the user who was the first to report the problem. If there are errors in these reports, please let me know since these are used when it is decided which users qualify for the free personal license.

Issues found by beta testers

Issue: Duplicate File Finder isn't working as good as it should

Minor issue found in the RC 2 build:

When starting the program i get the message the cache needs to be updated on a regular base, the next update will be done in about 15 days,

this is not really correct because the cache is updated on my pc every 5 days.

I have the build about 14 days now and i think it is the third time it updated my cache. :|

I asked repetitiveley for changing something in regcleaner which to my surprise pretended as highly erroneous varions aentries realated to KAV ; this odoes not happen any more ; maybe this is unsignificant but for me it was a Nightmare and I could not rely upon indications of Regcleaner in jv16 PT (of course ) as one should ; one has to be confident in waht your tool does ; otherwise , there is no need for such a tool ; wether this bug was fixed by fixing other bugs in the former versions , I do not know but anyway , at least now the Regcleaner tool works at perfection and do not claim misleading errors which anyway could not be get rid of whatever the settings of KAV ; redseujac told me once that "do not bother" ; these errors are not serious but they were indicated as such permanently ; this very troublesome problem now disappeared ; also Regmonitor now REALLY take full Snapshots and do not hang for hours as in the previous versions ; what remains to be tested is the Disc cleaner tool from temp files that tou can delete but you cannot choose which to keep and which to delete ; although there are settings to decide this after the scan ; these options never worked ; I will test wether they are operational now ; this is a very very serious question ; some temp files have to be deleted , sometimes you MUST keep them .
