jv16 PowerTools 2007 Beta5 is now released, you can download it from:

Warning

Do not install this program over any previous version of jv16 PowerTools, always install beta versions to a new directory. This product version is not an official release, it will contain bugs and can cause harm to your computer. Do not download or install this program unless you are willing to take the risk and understand what beta testing means.

On Beta Testing

All beta testers who submit valuable feedback, such as bug reports, performance reports, improvement ideas etc, will receive a free personal license for the product after it has been officially released. Simply installing and testing the application doesn't mean that you would automatically receive a free license, free licenses are issued only to those who submit valuable feedback.

General Release Notes

* Do not start to translate the English.lng yet, the language interface will still change.

* This version still lacks a few new icons (for example to the new One Click Cleaner).

* This version does not run under any Win9x system, such as Windows 95, 98, 98 SE nor ME. The program doesn't start due to a missing NT-only DLL file.

Main changes since Beta4

* All bugs reported since Beta1 should now be fixed, repost your reports if something is not yet fixed

* Many minor interface improvements and optimizations

* Automation features of One Click Cleaner implemented

Development schedule

RC1 (Release Candidate 1) version is expected to be released next, the final version should be ready after 1-3 RC's.

On some test systems I tried this I saw a "Program failed to initialize, error: 05" error message which caused the program to crash on first run after the installation.

However, I didn't wish to make any last minute fixing attempts so I didn't do anything. If you see this error message, simply ignore it and start the program again, it should work properly when started the second time.

I see you added in the "Explore" feature for files :.

In beta3 I reported issues with mass splitting files, and the bug is still present. Selecting several files, mass splitting with any toggle of options results in no change to the files. The message window still displays "Done!" however.

Oddly clicking Remove while having all of the files selected caused PT to enter an infinite loop, but this has only happened once so far.

defrag fails. Analyze .. progress cycles though to 100% and then progress column returns to 'n/a' no other actions take place. fails the same on ntsf or fat32 the drives are 43.9 and 44.9 GB with 33gb and 33.7 gb free space respectively. Fails with firewall enabled or disabled. waiting 5 minutes nothing happens. fails with anitvirus enable or disabled. tks wilk

2. Functionaly, how is your defragmenter different/better than the one in Win XP?

The PT 2007's Disk Defragmenter will offer better defragment performance (i.e. the drive will be better optimized afterwards) compared to the defragmenter in Windows XP.

3. Sofware Manager: -just like in the 2006 version, for a fair number of program entries their "Intallation path" and/or "Main executable" are shown as "N/A". Since the whole point of this tool is to weed out the junk, if the name of the program is not descriptive - the user has no idea what it is, where it is and thus can't decide what to do about it. If there is any way to improve detection and description of entries it would be a great step forward.

In some cases the path is listed as: "C:\PROGRA~1\Directory Name". In others "Program Files" is writen in full, why the inconsistency?

It's very difficult to tell what software is installed to the computer, it's even more difficult to try to detect the installation path and main executable file of the software, therefore the list will always have a few N/A's.

The reason why in some cases the path is listed in a 8.3 form (i.e. like "PROGRA~1") is because the data is extracted from the system and not converted. But you are correct, all file paths should be shown in the same format, I'll try to fix this for the next beta.

4. Registry Compactor: -'Full registry backups (files with extension ".bak_jv16pt") of the compacted root hives are stored in the same directories as the original root hive storage files.'

Does that mean that what is backed up are the files as they were before the compaction?

Yes, exactly.

5. Registry backup and restore: -it would be realy great to have a SEPARATE tool for backing up the registry (as a whole) and to be able to save it to a folder of user's choice (not to the same directories as the original root hives). Then it would be much easier to restore the registry when necessary to a particular back up date. This is why the program doesn't at the moment contain such feature.

6. BUG: I ran the Registry Compactor twice and both times the system would not restart after - it started to hang during shut down. [ My system: Pentium3, 256MB RAM, OS WinXP sp2, Antivirus AVG Free, Firewall Zone Alarm, Antispyware Spybot S&D with a resident on.

Could you please try it again? Sounds very strange that such thing could happen.

Reg cleaner in automation mode:

when running automation task reg cleaner window does not open, just shows in task bar until the job is completed - same bug in beta 4.

Backup tool now shows warnings regarding deleting backups no matter what the source is - aka fixed.

Disk Defragmenter:

After an analyze with all my drives and partitions selected, I only can see the Filesystem and Fragmentation View of the drive or partition the analyze has done as last one.

Drive report and Fragmented data is shown right for the selected drive or partition.

Without Anti-Virus running, I did an analyze of my C:-Drive (11 GB), which indicated an fragmentation of 15.7 %. After 3 hours the Defrag-process had done only 25.8 % - at this moment it was trying to defrag "Dll"-files - so I stopped it there.

I might be wrong, but just now I have noticed the Disk Defragmenter only defragments the files without consolidating free space.

All parts of the fragmented files are brought together so that they are contiguous, that's true, but no large, contiguous region of free space is created using compaction to impede return of fragmentation.

What I mean is that the defragmented files seems to be not placed one after another in a contiguous way from the beginning of the drive, so a large contiguous region of free space could be created after the contiguous file block.

That's a pity, because that way new files may be easily created in a fragmented way, while if the file system can find enough consolidated free space new files are created contiguously and re-fragmentation occurs at a slower rate.

I un-installed beta5 and re-installed jv16 2006 and it showed these same 3 items exactly as the beta 5 did. There was one difference, it removed these 3 items. I believe the beta 5 should also remove these items.

seems indiosyncratic. When I ran it, it stall three times looking for a disk in the disk drive. Then it appeared to do nothing at all. Did not fill in the grid on screen. Very confusing. Am I missing something?

I have run the registry cleaner. It found found 11 items. I proceeded to "fix" with backup.

The window below the cleaner reports that 2 of the items could be fixed and 9 were removed. No problem. However, the registry cleaner above this lists 7 entries...as if I just executed another scan. So, I again selected to fix the 7 problems...and get a report that these had been removed...but I again see the registry cleaner with 7 items listed - seems like a loop...Perhaps only a problem if program is not run in admin mode.

I exited and ensured that jv16 was running in Admin mode (Vista). I now get 2 entries that can be removed:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\IME\China\imesc\Directories\

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\IMEJP\10.0\directories\

One of these has been removed while the other could be fixed according to the window below. The window above now lists one of the 2 items...not sure whether this is the one that was removed or the other. I now select this item for fixing. The registry cleaner tells me that this item had to be removed...fine.

Now I run another scan and find that the entries are still there.

Just an idea: could the registry compactor not provide information on the the degree of wasted space and fragmentation in the registry. I may only want to compact certain areas of the registry where I see the biggest benefit.
